Valley City  (CSi)  Valley City State University has retained its No. 1 ranking among public regional colleges in the Midwest according to the 2017 U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges rankings.

VCSU was the No. 1 ranked public regional college in the Midwest in the 2016 rankings, and also in the 2012 and 2013 rankings. The university was ranked No. 2 in the 2010, 2011, 2014 and 2015 rankings.

This marks the 19th consecutive year that VCSU has been ranked a U.S. News “Best College.”

VCSU President, Tisa Mason says, “The No. 1 ranking among our peer institutions is a reflection of the good things we have going at Valley City State.  The tenet that a VCSU education is special runs strong and deep throughout the history of the university, and the consistent top rankings we’ve received over the years affirm that belief. Our faculty and staff strive for excellence on a daily basis, and the high quality and great value our students and their families receive here is a direct result of that hard work.”

The U.S. News rankings are based on a number of criteria, including graduation rate performance, first-year student retention, class sizes, academic profiles of entering freshmen, admission acceptance rates, faculty resources, financial resources and support, graduation rate performance, alumni giving rates, and academic excellence assessments by administrators at peer institutions.

The “Regional Colleges in the Midwest” rankings include 80 colleges and universities, with 14 public institutions, in 12 states: North Dakota, Minnesota, South Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri.

The U.S. News rankings can be found online at colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges. The rankings can also be found in the 2017 U.S. News Best Colleges guidebook.

Jamestown  (CSi -UJ) The University of Jamestown has again received the highest ranking of all North Dakota institutions in any category of U.S. News and World Report’s “Best Colleges 2017” edition, released Sept. 13. For the tenth consecutive year, the University is ranked in the top tier of Best Regional Colleges, moving up twelve places from its 2016 rankings.
President Robert S. Badal commented on this new ranking, saying, “University of Jamestown is now recognized as a ‘top 25’ regional Midwest college, as we continue as the leader in North Dakota.”
U.S. News and World Report’s “Best Colleges” is the most recognized and popular of all college rankings. The report evaluates colleges and universities annually by assessing criteria such as peer assessment, graduation rate, student/faculty ratios, class size, alumni giving, and student testing scores. Categories are Regional Colleges, Regional Universities, National Universities, and National Liberal Arts Colleges.
In addition to its U.S. News and World Report ranking, the University of Jamestown was once again named a “Best in the Midwest” college by Princeton Review and ranked number one in North Dakota as a “Best College for the Money” by College Factual.
Established in 1883, the University of Jamestown is a private, liberal arts university granting Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science and Science in Nursing degrees, as well as Master’s Degrees in Education and Leadership, and a Fargo-based Doctor of Physical Therapy degree. The University of Jamestown offers more than 40 areas of study, integrating the liberal arts with sound professional programs. With the Jamestown Journey to Success, emphasis is placed not only on preparing students academically in their chosen areas of study, but also on preparing them through a student-centered experience.

Bismarck  (CSi) Drivers License offices, statewide, will be temporarily closed on Wednesday, September 28. The closure will allow North Dakota Department of Transportation Drivers License employees to receive required annual training.

The Grand Forks Drivers License office, located at 1951 N. Washington Street in Grand Forks, will be closed September 26-28, for a construction project.

All Drivers License sites will resume normal business hours on Thursday, September 29.

Motor Vehicle offices will remain open as scheduled, and will process vehicle registrations, vehicle titles, vehicle license plates and tabs, and associated work as usual.

MANDAN, N.D. (AP) —  Authorities say several people have been arrested for interfering with the construction of the Dakota Access oil about 70 miles northwest of the main protest site, which is near the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in North Dakota.

Morton County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Donnell Preskey says several law enforcement authorities responded to the site near Glen Ullin late Tuesday morning.

She says construction workers were “swarmed” by protesters and that two people had chained themselves to equipment.

Preskey did not immediately know how many people had been arrested or what charges the might face.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A federal judge has kept in place a previous work-stoppage order on a small portion of the nearly 1,200-mile (1931 km) Dakota Access oil pipeline while federal agencies review construction permits for the site, which the Standing Rock Sioux tribe says is sacred ground. But much has yet to be settled.

MANDAN, N.D. (AP) — The company building the Dakota Access oil pipeline says it’s removing damaged construction equipment from the area near a protest site in North Dakota. Local authorities say bulldozers, scrapers and other heavy equipment damaged by people protesting the pipeline were taken away on flat bed trailers Tuesday morning. The Energy Transfer Partners says the move does not indicate that it’s backing down on the project. Hundreds of people have been fighting the pipeline over concerns that it will harm water supplies and disturb burial and cultural sites sacred to the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe.

MANDAN, N.D. (AP) — A broadcast journalist reporting on a protest against the Dakota Access pipeline has been charged with criminal trespass in North Dakota, and an international watchdog is calling for the misdemeanor to be dropped. Democracy Now host Amy Goodman was charged Thursday. A warrant has been issued for her arrest. Carlos Lauria with the Committee to Protect Journalists says the warrant is “a transparent attempt to intimidate reporters from covering protests of significant public interest.”

DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) — The airport in Devils Lake is seeing a record number of passengers this year. Airport manager John Nord tells the Devils Lake Journal that the facility is on track to hit 6,500 boardings. But he would like that number to increase by 3,500. The facility currently gets $150,000 a year in federal funds for improvement projects. But once the facility hits 10,000 boardings, the assistance jumps to $1 million.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota farmers are close to wrapping up spring wheat harvest.

The Agriculture Department says in its weekly crop report that spring wheat is 95 percent completed, ahead of the 82 percent five-year average. Durum wheat was 77 percent harvested, ahead of the 65 percent average.

Corn and soybean conditions were rated mostly good to excellent.

The report says that most harvest activities in the northeastern part of the state were halted due to rainfall. Persistent moisture in that area has led to drowned out acres and disease in unharvested crops.

Pasture and range conditions were rated 55 percent good to excellent, 28 percent fair, and 17 percent poor to very poor.

In world and national news…

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — President Barack Obama is scoffing at the idea that Donald Trump is favored by working-class voters. Obama told thousands of Democrats in Philadelphia Tuesday afternoon that the GOP presidential nominee “wouldn’t let you all on his golf course. And now suddenly this guy is going to be your champion?” The president also mounted a vigorous defense of Hillary Clinton’s transparency and her fitness for the White House, saying “Clinton is steady and she is true.” He urged the crowd “to work as hard for Hillary as you did for me.”

CLIVE, Iowa (AP) — Donald Trump is pledging to be, “the president of everyone.” His approach Tuesday in Iowa is part of a strategy to capitalize on Hillary Clinton’s declaration that half of the Republican’s supporters belong in “a basket of deplorables.” She later said she regrets saying that half were in that basket and added that many of Trump’s supporters are hardworking Americans. But Trump is hammering the theme that Clinton’s remarks slander his supporters. He says it comes from the same “arrogance and entitlement,” as he put it, that prompted Clinton to use a private email server while she was secretary of state.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democrats are calling for a criminal investigation into an improper $25,000 donation Donald Trump’s charity made to a political group supporting Florida’s attorney general. The donation came after her office said it was weighing legal action against Trump University. And she eventually decided not to take that action. Every Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee signed a letter to the Justice Department Tuesday asking for investigators to determine whether the 2013 donation violated federal bribery or tax laws. Charities are barred from political giving, and Trump later paid a $2,500 IRS fine.

ECLECTIC, Ala. (AP) — Authorities say an Alabama teenager will be charged as an adult for allegedly shooting and killing his parents after an apparent dispute over a house party. Police in Elmore County say the 17-year-old shot his parents after they came home and found a party involving drugs had been thrown at their house. The teen claimed his father shot his mom during an argument and then turned the gun on himself, but authorities say that account didn’t line up with forensic evidence.
