“Equinox: equal day and night, but not quite”

(source: http://www.timeanddate.com/astronomy/equinox-not-equal.html)

“Equinox” literally means “equal night”, giving the impression that the night and day on the equinox are exactly the same length; 12 hours each. But this isn’t entirely true.

In reality equinoxes don’t have exactly 12 hours of daylight.

“Equinox” means “equal night” in Latin. But even if the name suggests it and it’s widely accepted, it isn’t entirely true that day and night are exactly the same on the equinox all over the world – only nearly

On any other day of the year, the Earth’s axis tilts a little away from or towards the Sun. But on the two equinoxes, the Earth’s axis tilts neither away from nor towards the Sun.  The equinoxes occur the moment the sun crosses the celestial equator – the imaginary line in the sky above the Earth’s equator. This happens in March and September every year.”

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Authorities have taken a man into custody without incident after a reported bank robbery in Bismarck.

The Bismarck Police Department says formal charges are pending in the case.

Authorities responded Wednesday afternoon to the robbery. Officials say the suspect didn’t show a weapon, and nobody was injured.

Roughly 20 Bismarck police officers searched the area and found the suspect under the Bismarck Expressway Bridge.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A federal judge in North Dakota has ruled that the state must let voters without identification cast a ballot by filing an affidavit.

U.S. District Judge Daniel Hovland issued the order Tuesday. The Bismarck-based judge in August blocked the state’s voter identification law after it was challenged by a group of Native Americans.

The lawsuit was filed in January by seven members of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa. They alleged that the state’s voter identification requirements “disproportionately burden and disenfranchise Native Americans.”

Prior to 2013, a voter could sign an affidavit attesting to his or her eligibility to vote in the precinct but the state Legislature removed that provision.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota legislative committee has approved an emergency request to borrow $6 million to cover the cost of law enforcement related to the ongoing protest of the four-state Dakota Access oil pipeline.

The state’s Emergency Commission, headed by Gov. Jack Dalrymple, voted Wednesday to borrow the funds from the state-owned Bank of North Dakota.

The leader of the state’s National Guard says North Dakota has spent about $1.8 million to date on law enforcement and other costs related to the protests, centered in south-central North Dakota.

Maj. Gen. Alan Dohrmann says Morton County has spent an additional $400,000 in extra costs. The county may apply for reimbursement from the state.

The Republican governor has asked federal officials to reimburse the state for the additional law enforcement costs.

MANDAN, N.D. (AP) — About 300 people have rallied outside a jail in Mandan to show support for a Dakota Access pipeline protester from South Dakota who remains in custody.   42-year-old Olowan Martinez is being held at the Morton County Correctional Center. She was initially arrested last week on a trespassing charge. The arrest triggered a warrant from Nebraska, where she is wanted on charges of terroristic threats, theft and criminal mischief.

DENVER (AP) — Interior Secretary Sally Jewell is in Colorado to tout efforts to save the greater sage grouse across the West one year after the federal government decided not invoke the Endangered Species Act to protect the rare bird. In sports…

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) — Adrian Peterson will undergo surgery on his right knee to repair a torn meniscus and Minnesota Vikings coach Mike Zimmer says the star running back could return this season.

Peterson was injured in Sunday night’s victory over Green Bay.

The 2012 league MVP made a fast recovery from a torn ACL in his left knee suffered at the end of the 2011 season, then rushed for more than 2,000 yards in 2012.

Minnesota (2-0) on Wednesday signed running back Ronnie Hillman, who was with the Broncos when they won the Super Bowl last season. Jerick McKinnon will start at Carolina.

The Vikings also placed starting left tackle Matt Kalil on injured reserve with a hip problem that will require surgery.

In world and national news…

NEW YORK (AP) — The Federal Reserve will keep interest rates where they are for just a bit longer. Policymakers still expect to raise the key short-term interest rate once this year, possibly in December. Their overall outlook after Wenesday’s meeting is more cautious than the last time they issued interest-rate projections three months ago. They foresee just two rate hikes next year and two more the following year. The Fed expects economic growth to remain tepid for the next three years. It’s the latest evidence that the central bank is pessimistic about the economy’s potential to expand more quickly.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Court records indicate that the man who was shot to death by Charlotte, North Carolina, police had a criminal record including an assault conviction. But a woman who identified herself as an advocate for Keith Scott’s family said at a news conference that he shouldn’t be “re-victimized” because of things he did in the past. She told reporters: “What he was doing at the time of the shooting is what’s relevant.”

ELIZABETH, N.J. (AP) — A homeless man who found a backpack filled with bombs in New Jersey on Sunday night is being hailed as a hero. Authorities say Lee Parker and a friend contacted police after finding the bag near the Elizabeth train station. Federal investigators say the bag was left by New York-region bombing suspect Ahmad Khan Rahami. Parker says he realized something was wrong with the heavy backpack after seeing wires. An advocate for the homeless says she’s glad Parker is being recognized. Her group is putting Parker up in a hotel, and an online fundraising campaign has raised thousands for him and a friend. Parker says all he wants is a good job.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Hillary Clinton’s communications director says the candidate is preparing for the “different Trumps” that could show up at the first debate. Jennifer Palmieri tells reporters that Clinton believes Donald Trump “may be aggressive or he may lay back.” Clinton and Trump meet at the first debate Monday night. Clinton is appearing in Florida Wenesday, but has no campaign events scheduled in the coming days as she prepares for the debate. Palmieri declined to say who is playing Trump in their practice sessions.

GENEVA (AP) — The United Nations says it will resume aid convoys within Syria after an attack on a convoy killed 20 people and prompted a temporary suspension. A spokesman for the U.N. humanitarian aid agency says Wednesday that “several” convoys are expected as early as tomorrow, but they won’t go to Aleppo. An attack on Monday night in Aleppo province on a warehouse of the Red Crescent where U.N. aid was delivered that day killed 20 people and destroyed most of the delivery.

DETROIT (AP) — Evenflo is recalling nearly 30,000 combination booster seats because children can loosen the harness without an adult’s knowledge.

The recall covers certain Evolve 3-in-1 seats. Government documents say that if the harness is loose, it could increase the risk of injury in a crash.

Evenflo says there have been no reports of injuries, but the company has received 27 complaints that children have been able to loosen the harnesses.

The Miamisburg, Ohio, company will notify registered owners and provide a remedy kit with a replacement harness adjustment button at no cost.
