Appearing in the Best Online Graduate Education Programs, VCSU’s M.Ed. earned the #22 spot of 143 and is the only program offered by a North Dakota college or university to be ranked in this category.

These rankings were created in response to today’s high demand for graduate education provided in a flexible manner.

It illustrates the consistency and strong academic quality and rigor within VCSU’s Master of Education program and the national reputation the program has earned. VCSU is committed to this program which is highly accessible, is of high quality, and meets the needs of education professionals throughout North Dakota and beyond. For the first time, there are overall numeric rankings that take into account admissions selectivity, student engagement, faculty credentials and training, and student services and technology.

In order to be considered for the rankings, online degree programs needed to meet the definition of a distance education program similar to the U.S. Department of Education’s which states that all required coursework for program completion is able to be completed via distance education courses that incorporate Internet-based learning technologies by students who are separated from the instructor.

TIOGA, N.D. (AP) – Authorities are investigating whether a man found dead in the northwestern North Dakota city of Tioga died of exposure to the cold.

The body of the man estimated to be in his 40s or 50s was found Monday beneath a motor home parked near a bar. Authorities say there are no immediate signs of foul play and early indications are that the man died from exposure.

His body has been sent to the state medical examiner’s office in Bismarck for an autopsy. Authorities did not immediately release his name.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem (STEHN’-juhm) says he is as annoyed as anyone by telephone sales calls to his home.

Stenehjem told lawmakers on Tuesday that telemarketers who violate North Dakota’s “Do Not Call” law are getting tougher to catch. He says scammers increasingly are “hijacking” telephone numbers to disguise their whereabouts, making them hard to find.

North Dakota’s telemarketing law was passed in 2003 and bars most organizations from making telephone sales calls to homes if the phone number is listed on a state “do not call” list.

Stenehjem says the state has levied about $250,000 in fines over the years. He says that’s more than what federal regulators have tallied over the years.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The Agriculture Department says in its latest report that wheat and barley stocks are up in the Dakotas.

The Dec. 1 stocks were released last week. Wheat stocks totaled 204 million bushels in North Dakota and 60.3 million bushels in South Dakota, up 33 percent and less than 1 percent, respectively. Barley stocks were up 86 percent in North Dakota and 9 percent in South Dakota.

Corn and soybean stocks also are up in North Dakota, but they’re down in South Dakota, a possible reflection of worse drought conditions in South Dakota.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Eight North Dakota Army National Guard soldiers are beginning a year of duty in Afghanistan.

A send-off ceremony was scheduled Wednesday for the members of the Bismarck-based Detachment 42 Organizational Support Airlift unit.

The soldiers will be providing aerial surveillance for troops on the ground in Afghanistan.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The price tag for a new Sanford Health hospital in Fargo has been trimmed by nearly $50 million.

The size of the medical center slated to open in 2016 remains about 1 million square feet, but plans now call for a smaller base and an additional floor. The change reduces the cost from $541 million to $494 million.

Dennis Millirons, president of Sanford Medical Center in Fargo, says planning for the project will shift to detailed drawings next month. Steel will start going up in March or April. The shape of the hospital will resemble an “X” when viewed from above.

Sanford Health is based in Fargo and in Sioux Falls, S.D. It bills itself as the largest not-for-profit rural health care provider in the country.

HOUSTON (AP) – ConocoPhillips is selling some properties in North Dakota and Montana to a subsidiary of Denbury Resources Inc. for $1.05 billion.

The oil and natural gas company said Tuesday that the Cedar Creek Anticline properties span about 86,000 net acres in southwestern North Dakota and eastern Montana.

The sale doesn’t include any of ConocoPhillips’ Bakken Formation assets.

With this deal, the company has raised about $12 billion from asset sales since the start of 2012. Proceeds from the sales will be used for general corporate purposes.

ConocoPhillips, based in Houston, anticipates an approximately $120 million earnings benefit in its fourth quarter related to the Cedar Creek Anticline transaction.

The deal is expected to close in the first quarter. Denbury is based in Plano, Texas.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A state regulator says the amount of natural gas wasted as a byproduct of oil production in North Dakota could be significantly cut by giving energy companies a tax exemption if they utilize the gas.

Oil companies in North Dakota can burn off natural gas for a year without paying taxes or royalties on it.

But legislation being discussed Tuesday by the House Taxation and Finance Committee would extend the exemption for two additional years if a company collects at least 75 percent of the gas at well sites.

Department of Mineral Resources Director Lynn Helms told the panel that about 30 percent of the state’s gas production is being burned off because development of needed pipelines and processing facilities has not kept pace with production.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – The University of North Dakota aerobatic team is flying high once again.

Team coach Mike Lents guided UND to its fifth straight national collegiate title, which is the result of participating in aerobatic competitions around the country last year.

Members of the team are Aaron Fettig of Bismarck, Ben Collins of Fort Collins, Colo., Alexander Sachs of Oregon, Wis., Jonathan Sievert of Anoka, Minn., and Andrew Davidsmeyer of Jacksonville, Ill.

Lents is an aviation lecturer in the school of aerospace sciences.

The team also is hosting “Wild Wednesday” tonight, which will feature an intrasquad scrimmage.

NFL…

CHICAGO (AP) – The Bears have hired Montreal Alouettes coach Marc Trestman to replace the fired Lovie Smith.

It’s the first head coaching job in the NFL for Trestman, a long-time NFL assistant who spent the past five seasons coaching the CFL’s Alouettes and led them to two Grey Cup titles.

Trestman was an offensive coordinator with San Francisco, Arizona and Oakland. The Bears hope he can get the most out of quarterback Jay Cutler and help them reach the playoffs on a consistent basis.

SAN DIEGO (AP) – Former Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy is the new head coach of the AFC West-rival Chargers. He replaces Norv Turner, who was fired at the end of the season after the Chargers failed to make the playoffs for the third straight year.

A one-time All-Star, Soriano had 42 saves and a 2.26 ERA for the AL East champion New York Yankees last year while filling in for injured closer Mariano Rivera.

The International Cycling Union says it wants Armstrong to testify before its commission on doping.
