Valley City  (VCSU Newsletter)  In past years the VCSU Staff Senate has sponsored professional clothing sales and Viking Pride clothing sales. This year we decided to try something different. Whether your closet is packed with Viking gear or it’s in need of some additional VCSU items, this clothing swap is for you!

The week of Oct. 17–21 you can drop off any VCSU gear, accessories or clothing at the Student Center Info Desk or at Kelli Heath’s office (McFarland 208).

On Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 25–26, 2016, it will be all displayed in the Alumni Room for staff and faculty to “shop” for items they like!

Bring 10 items and take 2 or if you don’t bring anything and take 5—the idea is to help share VCSu’s Viking Pride and give some of the gear a new life across campus.

If you have questions or thoughts, please talk to Kelli or Brooke.

DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) — Two Devils Lake men were injured when their pickup truck collided with an Amtrak passenger train in northeastern North Dakota.

The Highway Patrol says the crash happened at an intersection in Ramsey County about 6:45 a.m. Monday. No injuries were reported on the train, and authorities said damage was minor.

The truck was torn in half when the train struck it in the rear on the passenger side about 7 miles west of Devils Lake. The 62- and 67-year-old men inside were taken to a Grand Forks hospital with undisclosed injuries.

GRAFTON, N.D. (AP) — A Grafton woman who pleaded not guilty to locking four children in a dog cage has changed her plea and been sentenced.

Court documents show Jordan Nelson entered an Alford plea to four counts of child abuse or neglect, and prosecutors dismissed four felonious restraint charges. An Alford plea means Nelson acknowledges there was enough evidence to convict her.

Nelson was sentenced to serve 2 ½ years in prison. She could have faced up to 45 years behind bars on the original charges.

Authorities said the children who range in age from 5 to 9 years told investigators they were locked in the kennel in a basement with the lights off as punishment. Nelson allegedly forced one of the children to eat dog food. Nelson is not the children’s mother.

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) — State officials say 21,000 gallons of saltwater that spilled at a disposal well in Williams County was contained and recovered on site.

Zavanna LLC notified North Dakota’s Oil and Gas Division of the spill on Sunday at a site about 7 miles east of Williston. Five-hundred barrels were released and recovered. A barrel contains 42 gallons.

A broken well head was cited as the cause. A state inspector visited the site.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s candidates for governor are facing off in the last of three scheduled debates.

Republican Doug Burgum, Democrat Marvin Nelson and Libertarian Marty Riske are set to participate in the half-hour event sponsored by Prairie Public Television  (CSi Cable 13.)

Burgum is a former Microsoft executive from Fargo who defeated Wayne Stenehjem in the GOP primary. Nelson is an agriculture consultant who serves as a state representative from Rolla. Riske is a Fargo businessman and entrepreneur.

Republicans have held the governor’s office in North Dakota since 1992.

The debate will be recorded Monday afternoon at the Prairie Public TV studios in Fargo and aired Wednesday at 8 p.m.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota officials say they hope the weather allows the majority of planned road upgrades to be completed after millions of dollars of work has already been finished this summer.

North Dakota Department of Transportation operations director Wayde Swenson says about two-thirds of the 193 scheduled projects were finished as of last week. At this time in previous years, only about 45 to 55 percent of the work was completed.

Senson says the department usually finishes to 85 to 90 percent of the projects.

About $560 million of the $680 million planned for projects this year was bid out. Swenson says the lower number was a result of two rounds of mandatory budget cuts ordered by the governor earlier this year.

The Big Ten has four teams in the top 10 of The Associated Press college football poll during the regular season for the first time since 1960, and No. 24 Western Michigan is ranked for the first time in school history.

No. 8 Wisconsin and No. 10 Nebraska joined No. 2 Ohio State and No. 4 Michigan in the first 10 of the AP Top 25 released Monday. The poll release was delayed one day because two FBS games were postponed until Sunday due to Hurricane Matthew.

Alabama remains No. 1. The Crimson Tide received 56 first-place votes. Ohio State and No. 3 Clemson each received two first-place votes. Michigan had one first-place vote.

Washington was fifth as the top five went unchanged after all had decisive victories last weekend.
