The week of Oct. 17–21 you can drop off any VCSU gear, accessories or clothing at the Student Center Info Desk or at Kelli Heath’s office (McFarland 208).

Bring 10 items and take 2 or if you don’t bring anything and take 5—the idea is to help share VCSU’s Viking Pride and give some of the gear a new life across campus.

If you have questions or thoughts, please talk to Kelli or Brooke.

GRAFTON, N.D. (AP) — A Grafton woman who pleaded not guilty to locking four children in a dog cage has changed her plea and been sentenced.

Court documents show Jordan Nelson entered an Alford plea to four counts of child abuse or neglect, and prosecutors dismissed four felonious restraint charges. An Alford plea means Nelson acknowledges there was enough evidence to convict her.

Nelson was sentenced to serve 2 ½ years in prison. She could have faced up to 45 years behind bars on the original charges.

Authorities said the children who range in age from 5 to 9 years told investigators they were locked in the kennel in a basement with the lights off as punishment. Nelson allegedly forced one of the children to eat dog food. Nelson is not the children’s mother.
DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) — Two Devils Lake men were injured when their pickup truck collided with an Amtrak passenger train in northeastern North Dakota.

The Highway Patrol says the crash happened at an intersection in Ramsey County about 6:45 a.m. Monday. No injuries were reported on the train, and authorities said damage was minor.

The truck was torn in half when the train struck it in the rear on the passenger side about 7 miles west of Devils Lake. The 62- and 67-year-old men inside were taken to a Grand Forks hospital with undisclosed injuries.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s congressional delegation and a laborers union are applauding a federal appeals court ruling allowing construction to continue on a small stretch of the four-state Dakota Access pipeline.

The ruling Sunday clears the way for pipeline work to resume within 20 miles of Lake Oahe in North Dakota. The pipeline is otherwise nearly complete.

The Laborers International Union says the ruling affirms that the pipeline is a lawfully permitted project.

Earthjustice attorney Jan Hasselman tells The Bismarck Tribune that continuing construction would be “a tragedy.”

The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe is still appealing a court ruling that let work on the entire pipeline go forward. And federal agencies have prohibited construction on a section right at Lake Oahe where land is owned by the Army Corps of Engineers.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers won’t yet authorize construction of the $3.8 billion, four-state Dakota Access oil pipeline on federal land in North Dakota. The Corps also reiterated Monday its earlier request that Dallas-based pipeline owner Energy Transfer Partners voluntarily stop work on private land in the area.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Shailene Woodley’s arrest at a protest in North Dakota has been livestreamed to fans on Facebook. The “Divergent” actress was livestreaming her protest Monday of the four-state Dakota Access pipeline for a total of more than two-and-a-half hours Monday before her arrest by local authorities. Toward the end of a two hour video, Woodley is told by a law enforcement officer that she is being arrested for criminal trespassing. The video showing what appeared to be a peaceful protest has been viewed more than 3 million times.

Morton County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Rob Keller says Woodley was one of 27 protesters arrested Monday. She was also charged with engaging in a riot.

Woodley has been an outspoken opponent of the $3.8 billion project.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s three candidates for governor say that state officials should be negotiating a solution with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe over the Dakota Access pipeline.Republican Doug Burgum, Democrat Marvin Nelson and Libertarian Marty Riske faced off Monday in a debate sponsored by AARC in North Dakota. All three candidates say the tribe has good reason for being upset about a pipeline they say is a threat to their water source.

Burgum says there is a “big opportunity for enhanced dialogue” but the federal government needs to stop meddling in the state’s affairs. Nelson says the problem began with a “bad siting process” by the Public Service Commission and can only be fixed by face-to-face discussions.

The debate will be aired on Prairie Public Broadcasting Wednesday at 8 p.m.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota officials say they hope the weather allows the majority of planned road upgrades to be completed after millions of dollars of work has already been finished this summer.North Dakota Department of Transportation operations director Wayde Swenson tells The Bismarck Tribune about two-thirds of the 193 scheduled projects were finished as of last week. At this time in previous years, only about 45 to 55 percent of the work was completed.

Senson says the department usually finishes to 85 to 90 percent of the projects.

About $560 million of the $680 million planned for projects this year was bid out. Swenson says the lower number was a result of two rounds of mandatory budget cuts ordered by the governor earlier this year.
