Valley City (CSi) A fault in an underground electrical cable caused a power outage at Jefferson Elementary School, for about an hour, on Tuesday.

Valley City Electrical Supervisor Marshall Senf says crews  worked most of the day to replace the cable.

Valley City Public Schools Superintendent Josh Johnson says generators supplied a limited amount of lighting for classrooms until the full power returned.

Johnson pointed out that students assisted in preparing sandwiches for lunch due to the lack of full power to run the ovens.

Classes then resumed and it was anticipated that power would be restored to normal capacity on Wednesday, October 12th.

JAMESTOWN, ND) North Dakota Farmers Union (NDFU) announced today that it is filing a motion to intervene in a lawsuit that challenges the constitutionality of North Dakota’s corporate farming statute. State law prohibits non-family farm corporations or LLCs from owning farmland or engaging in production agriculture.

If allowed to intervene, Farmers Union will be able to participate in the ongoing litigation, because the outcome of it directly affects NDFU and its members.

Farmers Union led the fight that created our corporate farming law back in the 30s and  defended it, repeatedly, ever since, said NDFU President Mark Watne. As a result, we have a strong family farm and ranch culture that is the envy of other states and the backbone of our economy

North Dakota Farm Bureau filed the lawsuit in early June, just prior to primary election results of a law referred by Farmers Union that would have allowed corporate ownership of land by dairy and swine operations. That measure was defeated by 75 percent of voters and failed to pass in a single county.

It is clear that North Dakotans want family farms as their primary business structure and system of agricultural production, said Watne. This is the only system that provides rural and urban stability, national prosperity, and preserves human and natural resources and the dignity of the individual and family, he added.

Allowing corporate farming here in North Dakota is a step in the wrong direction,” emphasized Watne. We will continue to work for the interests of family farmers and our rural communities.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Fargo firefighters are investigating the cause of an early morning blaze at a commercial building.

The fire broke out about 3:45 a.m. Tuesday in the building that houses four businesses and also storage space. A passer-by alerted authorities.

Firefighters contained fire damage to an office for the Nugget Vending company, but smoke filled the building.

Damage is estimated at $25,000. No injuries were reported.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Representatives of some oil pipeline companies who were targeted by activists showing support with Dakota Access pipeline opponents say the attempt to disrupt delivery was not successful.

A group known as Climate Direct Action tried to shut valves on two pipelines in Minnesota, one in North Dakota, one in Montana and one in Washington state on Tuesday morning. All of the lines move oil from Canada to the United States.

Officials say pipelines at four of the sites were temporarily shut down before the protesters could reach the valves.

In Washington, the Mountain Puget Sound pipeline system wasn’t operating at the time of the attempt.

An Enbridge spokeswoman says the company regularly stops and starts its pipelines and reported “normal system operations” after the incident. Officials with Spectra Energy’s Express pipeline in Coal Banks Landing, Montana, say they were offline for five hours.

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) — The city of Williston has started construction on a $240 million airport northwest of the oil patch hub. A ground-breaking ceremony was held Monday for the project being funded by federal, state and city dollars.

The city’s existing Sloulin Field International Airport saw a ten-fold increase in passengers from 2008 to 2014, due in large part to record oil activity. The new Williston Basin International Airport is expected to be completed in the fall of 2018.

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve (SHEE’-vee) is assuring city residents that police are working to make sense of the events after a pickup truck plowed into a crowd of Native American rights activists protesting on the street in the downtown casino district.

Schieve issued a statement on behalf of herself and the city council Tuesday afternoon that said the incident is “troubling and saddens us deeply.”

Police say an 18-year-old male pickup driver and 17-year-old passenger contacted police three minutes after Monday evening’s incident beneath the famous arch with the city’s slogan, “Biggest Little City in the World.” A 59-year-old woman has been hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries. Three others were hurt.

The mayor says she takes such matters very seriously. She says Reno police will “hold anyone responsible accountable for their actions” once a thorough investigation is completed.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Shailene Woodley’s arrest at a protest in North Dakota has been livestreamed to fans on Facebook.

The “Divergent” actress was livestreaming her protest Monday of the four-state Dakota Access pipeline for a total of more than two-and-a-half hours Monday before her arrest by local authorities. Toward the end of a two hour video, Woodley is told by a law enforcement officer that she is being arrested for criminal trespassing. The video showing what appeared to be a peaceful protest has been viewed more than 3 million times.

Morton County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Rob Keller says Woodley was one of 27 protesters arrested Monday. She was also charged with engaging in a riot.

Woodley has been an outspoken opponent of the $3.8 billion project.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs put together a four-run ninth and advanced to the National League Championship Series by downing the Giants, 6-5 in San Francisco. Pinch-hitter Wilsson Contreras tied it with a two-run single and Javier Baez singled home Jason Heyward to cap the rally after the Giants carried a 5-2 lead into the ninth. David Ross homered for the Cubs, who have won a postseason series in consecutive years for the first time since capturing their only World Series titles in 1907 and 1908.

Now, the Cubs go home to wait out Thursday’s Game 5 of the Dodgers-Nationals series and have a couple of days to rest their legs before Saturday’s NLCS opener.

Cubs Manager Joe Maddon will likely hand the ball to veteran left-hander Jon Lester in Game 1 at Wrigley Field because he wasn’t needed in a potential Game 5.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Dodgers have forced a fifth and deciding game in their NL Division Series by beating Washington 6-5 on Chase Utley’s RBI single with two out in the bottom of the eighth. Adrian Gonzalez hit a two-run homer and Joc Pederson had two RBIs while the Dodgers built a 5-2 lead, but the Nationals tied it 5-5 on Daniel Murphy’s two-run single. SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Colin Kaepernick (KAP’-ur-nihk) is the San Francisco 49ers’ starting quarterback again after head coach Chip Kelly benched Blaine Gabbert. Kaepernick led the Niners to the Super Bowl following the 2012 season and the NFC title game the following year, but he struggled last year and lost the starting job to Gabbert. Kelly hopes Kaepernick can revitalize a team that is 1-4 after missing the playoffs last year.

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) —Hillary Clinton’s top adviser is accusing a longtime aide of Donald Trump of receiving “advance warning” about WikiLeaks’ plans to publish thousands of hacked emails. Clinton adviser John Podesta is pointing the finger at Trump adviser Roger Stone, who Podesta claims has been in touch with WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. Podesta says that in an August tweet, Stone says Podesta’s “time in the barrel” was coming. Stone calls the allegation “categorically false” and “without foundation.”

BEIRUT (AP) — Pope Francis is calling for an urgent cease-fire in Syria to evacuate civilians from what he calls an “inhuman” assault on the besieged rebel-held part of the city of Aleppo. Francis says he’s especially concerned about children “trapped under the cruel bombardments,” which on Tuesday left at least 25 people dead, five of them children.

BERLIN (AP) — Germany’s interior minister says the number of asylum-seekers who’ve arrived in the country this year is still “significant” but it’s far lower than last year. Minister Thomas de Maiziere says some 213,000 asylum-seekers have arrived in Germany so far this year. For all of 2015, the number was 890,000. De Maiziere also notes that only the people who’ve registered have been counted.
