MANDAN, N.D. (AP) — Officials say Dakota Access pipeline protesters created two separate roadblocks in southern North Dakota, one of which has been taken down.

The Morton County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Sunday night that the first roadblock on State Highway 1806 was built about 2 p.m. using barbed wire, cars and later hay bales, tree stumps and logs. Law enforcement authorities spoke with protesters, and it blockade came down before 5 p.m.

The sheriff’s office said a second blockade was still up as of 5:30 p.m. Sunday that was built with vehicles, campers and a state Department of Transportation message board.

The office also said there are 100 protesters on private property along the pipeline construction route near an encampment and that there were at least 10 temporary structures on the land.

It comes during a weekend of protests, including one Saturday that Morton County says ended up with 126 people being arrested. One person was arrested for trespassing Sunday.

MANDAN, N.D. (AP) — Actress Shailene Woodley is to stand trial in North Dakota early next year on charges related to her protest against the Dakota Access pipeline.

Woodley was among 27 activists arrested Oct. 10. The “Divergent” star, who livestreamed her arrest on Facebook, pleaded not guilty last week to criminal trespass and engaging in a riot.

Court documents show Woodley’s trial is scheduled Jan. 25 in state court in Mandan. She could face two months in jail and $3,000 in fines if convicted of the two misdemeanors.

The Standing Rock Sioux want construction of the $3.8 billion pipeline halted, saying it could taint water supplies and encroach on tribal burial sites. Protests supporting the tribe have been going on for months, with 269 people arrested as of Sunday.

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) — A jury has convicted a man accused of kidnapping and assaulting his former girlfriend in Williston last year.

The Williston Herald reports the jury took about three hours to return the verdict against 40-year-old Omar Toure, of Columbus, Ohio.

Toure is accused of driving from Ohio in search of his former girlfriend who had moved to North Dakota after giving birth to couple’s daughter. Authorities said Toure found the woman in a Walmart parking lot and forced her into a car at knifepoint. Police caught up with Toure in Sidney, Montana, where he was arrested and the woman was treated for a cut on her hand.

Toure’s request for an interpreter who speaks Wolof, a language spoken in Senegal and other African countries, caused delays in the case.

Toure’s attorney, Kevin McCabe, says his client will file an appeal.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota voters will decide next month on whether to legalize marijuana for medical purposes.

Measure 5 would allow qualifying patients to possess up to 3 ounces of medical marijuana for treatment of about a dozen medical conditions, such as cancer, AIDS, hepatitis C, ALS, glaucoma and epilepsy. The state Health Department would issue ID cards for patients and regulate state-licensed dispensaries.

Opponents of the measure say there are too many unanswered questions about appropriate dosages of marijuana and there aren’t enough safeguards in the 34-page proposal to make sure it is controlled. Supporters say it helps relieve chronic pain and helps lessen the side-effects of other treatments such as surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.

There are 25 states with comprehensive medical marijuana programs.

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. (AP) — The Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma has donated $10,000 to the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe in North Dakota to support its fight against the Dakota Access Pipeline.

The Cherokees say they presented a check last week in addition to providing three truckloads of firewood for those camping out to protest construction of the pipeline.

The Standing Rock Sioux want construction to stop on the $3.8 billion pipeline, saying it could contaminate the water supply and encroach on tribal burial sites. Protests supporting the tribe have been going on for months and have drawn thousands of people to the area where Texas-based Energy Transfer Partners is trying to finish building the 1,200-mile pipeline.

More than 220 people have been arrested since demonstrations began in August, including 80 protesters on Saturday.

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) — A proposed ordinance in Williston would require stores selling e-cigarettes to get the same North Dakota license as businesses that sell other tobacco products.

The  popularity of vaping has driven a new market of e-cigarette stores in the area. Businesses that sell tobacco products must seek a $15 state license, but stores that sell only e-cigarettes don’t face such requirements.

The ordinance would require vape shops to seek a city license to operate, putting them on the map for compliance checks from law enforcement. The expense wouldn’t exceed the state cost.

Williston Mayor Howard Klug says other retailers face a $100 fine for selling to a minor, and the fines increase for each infraction within a year period.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota coal industry is trying to change the face of energy technology research as it looks toward a carbon-free future.

EmPower Commission has identified a gap in large-scale commercial trials to deploy technologies into the field. The commission is a group of representatives from the state’s energy industries that formed to develop North Dakota’s energy policy.

Jason Bohrer, president of the nonprofit Lignite Energy Council, says there needs to be a change in research and development philosophies in order to meet the challenges in energy development. The group is planning to ask the state Legislature to develop a program to fund such projects.

The Lignite Vision 21 Program, created to help fund new lignite energy facilities, caps its projects at $10 million.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Josh Huff returned a kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown, Carson Wentz outplayed Sam Bradford and the Philadelphia Eagles beat Minnesota 21-10 on Sunday, handing the Vikings their first loss of the season.

The Eagles (4-2) snapped a two-game losing streak while the rested Vikings (5-1) hardly looked like an unbeaten team after having a bye.

Bradford returned to Philadelphia for the first time since his trade to Minnesota eight days before the season opener paved the way for Wentz to start. Bradford was 7-7 in his only season with the Eagles and won his first four starts for the Vikings.

But the Eagles pressured and harassed their former quarterback all game, sacked him six times, and forced his first three turnovers this season.

For the day, Bradford was 24-of-41 for 224 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Matt Asiata had 55 yards rushing. Cordarrelle Patterson had seven catches for 67 yards and a TD.

NASCAR…

TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) — Joey Logano grabbed a critical win to give Team Penske one car in the next round of NASCAR’s playoffs. Denny Hamlin edged Austin Dillon for the final spot in the field on a tiebreaker Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway.

Logano wasn’t in a must-win situation, but the victory gave him a guaranteed slot on a day when the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship field was cut from 12 to eight drivers.

Engine troubles for Martin Truex Jr. and Penske driver Brad Keselowski counted for two of the eliminations, and the race came down to a late battle for the final transfer spot between Hamlin and Dillon.

Hamlin finished third and Dillon was ninth. They ended the round tied in points, but the eighth and final slot went to Hamlin on a tiebreaker.

FORMULA ONE…

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Lewis Hamilton got the victory he needed to keep his Formula One championship hopes alive, winning the U.S. Grand Prix for the fourth time in five years Sunday.

Hamilton cut Mercedes teammate and championship leader Nico Rosberg’s points lead to 26 with three races to go. Rosberg finished second ahead of Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo to maintain a relatively comfortable cushion over Hamilton in the title chase.

Rosberg doesn’t have to win any of the final three races to get his first career Formula One championship, even if Hamilton wins all of them. Two more seconds and a third place will wrap it up. But that also means Rosberg can’t afford a bad race if Hamilton is going to make a late charge.

Hamilton started from pole position and got one of his best starts of the season to hold position for his seventh victory of the season.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Carli Lloyd scored twice and the U.S. women’s national team defeated Switzerland 5-1 in an exhibition match in Minneapolis on Sunday.

Christen Press, Crystal Dunn and Kealia Ohai also scored for the United States, playing its second friendly against Switzerland this week. The U.S. defeated the Swiss 4-0 on Wednesday night in Utah.

Ohai entered the game late for her international debut and scored 48 seconds later on for her first goal. It was the fastest goal in a debut in team history, one second faster than Lynn Williams’ goal in her debut on Wednesday.

Sandrine Mauron scored for Switzerland off the rebound of a shot from Lara Dickenmann to take the early lead in the seventh minute. It was just the second goal that the Swiss have scored against the United States.

Lloyd now has 96 international goals and 17 goals this year. She will not play in the team’s year-ending matches against Romania next month in San Jose and Carson, California, because she is getting married.

Attendance for the friendly was announced at 23,400, a record for a U.S. women’s match in Minnesota.

BAGHDAD (AP) — Iran is wading into a dispute between Iraq and Turkey. Iran says Turkey should get permission from Iraq’s government to participate in the operation to take back Mosul from the Islamic State group. Some 500 Turkish troops stationed at a base near Mosul are training Iraqi Sunni and Kurdish forces. Iraq’s government says the Turks should leave but Turkey refuses to leave. The fight for Mosul is in its second week.

CAPE MAY POINT, N.J. (AP) — A ship that figured in the real “Perfect Storm” story is about to begin a new phase of service that will do what years of ocean storms couldn’t — send it to the bottom. Officials tell The Record newspaper the Coast Guard vessel Tamaroa will be sunk this month to help grow a reef off New Jersey. Tamaroa helped rescue seven people in what was portrayed in the book and film “The Perfect Storm.”
