Jamestown  (CSi)  The North Dakota Highway Patrol reports a pickup, bicycle accident Wednesday afternoon about 2:45-p.m., on Griggs County Road 19, two miles south of Cooperstown seriously injured the bike rider.

The report says a 2016 Ram pick up was northbound, coming upon a northbound bike rider.

The pickup driver 52 year old Rick Rahlf of Cooperstown attempted to brake and swerve to avoid striking 67 year old Leslie Ronningen of Cooperstown.

The pickup struck the bike and rider from behind causing them to vault into the east ditch.

The report says Ronnigen received life-threatening injuries and was taken by Cooperstown Ambulance  Service, to Cooperstown Medical Center and then flown to Essentia Hospital in Fargo.

The crash remains under investigation.

Assisting at the scene was the Griggs County Sheriff’s Office.

Twenty-eight-year-old Darci Voldness is charged with felony manslaughter in the Aug. 15 death of 33-year-old Denver Glas, of Linton. She also faces a misdemeanor drug charge.

Voldness is accused of making a U-turn in front of Glas’ motorcycle, causing a crash that killed him.

Voldness could face up to 21 years in prison if convicted. Court documents don’t list an attorney for her, and a home telephone listing couldn’t be found.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Authorities in North Dakota say they’ve arrested three more people in a demonstration at the Capitol in Bismarck over the Dakota Access pipeline.

Highway Patrol Lt. Tom Iverson says the people refused orders to leave the governor’s residence on the Capitol grounds. The arrests follow those earlier Thursday of 14 protesters who were sitting, chanting and singing in a wing of the Capitol and refused orders to leave.

Iverson says the 17 individuals face criminal trespass charges in Burleigh County. He says at one point about 100 demonstrators were massed on a residential street near the Capitol.

Their protest followed an interfaith day of prayer in the southern part of the state near the small town of Cannon Ball. Hundreds of clergy sang hymns and marched near the route of the pipeline.

Members of the Standing Rock Sioux have demonstrated against the pipeline for months, saying they fear it could harm drinking water and construction could damage sacred sites.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — A Grand Forks-based North Dakota National Guard unit has been notified that it likely will be called to duty in the nation’s capital.

The 1st Battalion of the 188th Air Defense Artillery Regiment expects to mobilize next March for a yearlong mission helping provide security for Washington, D.C. The unit that also has detachments in Fargo and Bismarck served a similar mission in 2013 and 2014.

More than 200 air defense soldiers would work with other Defense Department agencies to protect airspace around the capital. The unit is expected to replace one from Florida.

It would be the 11th deployment for the 188th since 2004. The unit also has served in Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A group sponsoring an initiated measure to legalize medical marijuana in North Dakota is making a last-minute advertising push, thanks to a surprise donation from a national organization.

North Dakota Compassionate Care spokeswoman Anita Morgan says the group quickly organized the ad campaign after receiving $15,000 last week from Drug Policy Action.

The promotion includes one TV ad, featuring a Galesburg woman who says her doctors believe marijuana will help ease her suffering from multiple sclerosis. There are five online ads with testimonials from North Dakota residents who want the option of pot to help alleviate chronic pain.

No money has been raised in opposition to Measure 5. The North Dakota Medical Association has come out against it, saying there’s no way to ensure safe usage of marijuana.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Doug Burgum is featuring his fiancee in his final TV ad of the North Dakota governor campaign.

Kathryn Helgaas opens the Rebublican’s 30-second spot by saying that she and Burgum love North Dakota and he is running for governor “for all the right reasons.” It closes with Burgum talking about revitalizing communities, streamlining government, creating jobs and balancing the budget without raising taxes.

Burgum’s campaign said it is a statewide ad but declined to disclose the size and cost of the buy.

The final ad does not mention Democratic candidate Marvin Nelson. Nelson’s campaign began running a TV ad last week in the Fargo and Jamestown markets hitting Burgum on school funding and Medicaid issues.
HUDSON, S.D. (AP) — Federal investigators have found multiple safety violations at a South Dakota ethanol refinery expansion project after a worker died in May.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited a contractor, North Dakota-based Bilfinger Westcon Inc., with five major safety violations.

Investigators found 38-year-old Zenon Navarrete was removing a vent line May 6 when ethanol spilled onto him, flowed through a grated floor and was ignited by welding operations on a lower floor. The fire engulfed Navarrete, who died. Another employee was injured.

Inspectors found Bilfinger Westcon allowed welding without ensuring flammable liquids weren’t present. OSHA also cited the refinery owner, Sioux River Ethanol LLC, which operates as POET Biorefining, for violations.

In separate statements to The Associated Press, both Bilfinger Westcon and POET Biorefining said they were reviewing OHSA’s report.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s Game and Fish Department says fall fish surveys indicate a good smelt reproduction in Lake Sakakawea this year.

Fisheries Management Section Leader Scott Gangl says officials found a lot of young smelt in the stomachs of game fish.

The Missouri River reservoir is still recovering from the 2011 flood, which flushed away millions of smelt.

Fisheries biologists this year also sampled gizzard shad at all sites from the Garrison Dam to Lake Oahe. Gangl says shad in Oahe were at their highest levels since 2008, but forage is still lacking overall.

The surveys found relative good numbers of walleye in Sakakawea and a strong year class of walleye in Oahe. The Devils Lake basin had good catches of young-of-the-year walleye. Statewide, smaller lakes showed various levels of success.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A fall survey indicates the mule deer population in the western North Dakota Badlands is poised for a fifth straight year of population increases.

That raises the prospect of all hunting restrictions being lifted next year.

Hunting of mule deer does has been banned in North Dakota for four straight seasons, but due to the rebounding population the state Game and Fish Department is allowing limited hunting this fall of mule deer does in five western hunting units. Females will remain off-limits in three other units.

State Wildlife Chief Jeb Williams says if a spring survey shows another rise in the population, it’s likely that all eight units would be opened to doe hunting for the 2017 season.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — The Atlanta Falcons have a stronger grip on first place in the NFC South following another strong performance from the passing tandem of Matt Ryan and Julio Jones.

Ryan threw for 344 yards and four touchdowns as the Falcons outscored Tampa Bay, 43-28 to improve to 6-3. Jones had eight receptions for 111 yards and a TD to help Atlanta avenge their season-opening loss to the Buccaneers.

Levine Toilolo, Patrick DiMarco and Austin Hooper also caught TD pass from Ryan, who leads the NFL with 2,980 yards and 23 touchdown throws.

Jameis (JAY’-mihs) Winston threw for 261 yards and three touchdowns for the 3-5 Bucs, who have followed a three-game winning streak with back-to-back losses.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Twins have named Thad Levine as general manager under new chief baseball officer Derek Falvey in their attempt to rebound from a club-worst 59-103 record.

Levine was the assistant general manager of the Texas Rangers for the last 11 seasons. The 44-year-old previously worked for the Colorado Rockies and Los Angeles Dodgers and played baseball at Haverford College in Pennsylvania.

The Twins waited until the conclusion of the World Series to make the announcement about Levine on Thursday, after the Chicago Cubs beat Cleveland in seven games. Falvey was named to succeed Terry Ryan in charge of the baseball operations on Oct. 3, the day after the regular season ended. Falvey, the assistant general manager of the Indians, stayed with the club through the series.

CHICAGO (AP) — The city of Chicago plans to honor its World Series champion Cubs with a parade and rally today.

The celebration will start about 10 a.m. when the official parade leaves Wrigley Field and heads for downtown Chicago. The route will travel along the city’s famed Michigan Avenue and then along Columbus Drive near Lake Michigan before heading to Grant Park. Fans are encouraged to line the route.

The city also plans to dye the Chicago River blue to honor the team, similar to how the river goes green annually for St. Patrick’s Day.

Officials expect the Cubs motorcade to arrive in Grant Park around noon Friday, when there will be a rally at Hutchinson Field. The rally and parade come two days after the team won its first World Series championship in 108 years.

NEW YORK (AP) — That Chicago Cubs’ curse-breaking victory over the Cleveland Indians in Game 7 was also a big hit in the Neilsen ratings.

Game 7 reached 40 million viewers, making it the most-watched World Series game since 1991.

The Nielsen company said the World Series as a whole averaged 23.4 million viewers. That was the most popular World Series since another curse-breaking year, when the Boston Red Sox beat the St. Louis Cardinals in 2004 to end a long drought.

This was the Cubs’ first World Series championship since 1908. The Cubs did it in thrilling fashion, topping the Indians 8-7 in 10 innings for their third straight victory after trailing 3-1 in the series.

UNDATED (AP) — Major League teams are able to start announcing contract moves now that the World Series is over. Several clubs wasted no time reshaping their 40-man rosters.

The Angels and Tigers have pulled off the first trade of the offseason. Los Angeles has acquired outfielder Cameron Maybin from Detroit for pitcher Victor Alcantara. The Angels also announced they will exercise the $9 million contract option on Maybin, who batted a career-best .315 with four homers, 43 RBIs and 15 stolen bases in 94 games for the Tigers this year.

The Rangers have exercised their $5.25 million club option for next year on catcher and midseason pickup Jonathan Lucroy (LOO’-kroy). The two-time All-Star hit .276 with 11 homers and 31 RBIs in 47 games for the Rangers after being acquired from Milwaukee. The Rangers say they will extend a $17.2 million qualifying offer to All-Star outfielder Ian Desmond but won’t do likewise with first baseman Mitch Moreland or right-hander Colby Lewis.

The Phillies have declined their $23 million contract option on longtime first baseman Ryan Howard. The 2006 NL MVP was the last remaining member of Philadelphia’s 2008 World Series championship team.

The Nationals have exercised their $12 million club option for 2017 on left-hander Gio Gonzalez’s contract. The 31-year-old was 11-11 with a 4.57 ERA this season, throwing 177 1/3 innings in 32 starts. He has won at least 10 games in each of his five seasons with Washington.

San Francisco has picked up the $7 million contract option on pitcher Matt Moore, who was acquired at the trade deadline from Tampa Bay. The move means the Giants will pretty much have their rotation back for 2017, featuring Moore, Madison Bumgarner, Johnny Cueto (KWAY’-toh), Jeff Samardzija (suh-MAHR’-juh).

Reliever Fernando Rodney is a free agent after the Miami Marlins declined his $2 million option. The 39-year-old Rodney had a 5.89 ERA and eight saves in 39 games for the Fish.

Seattle has picked up the $7 million option on outfielder Seth Smith for the 2017 season, while declining the option on catcher Chris Iannetta (eye-ah-NEH’-tuh). The Mariners also reinstated Nathan Karns from the 60-day disabled list and lost outfielder Nori Aoki (NOHR’-ee ah-OH’-kee) to Houston in a waiver claim.

Outfielder Jay Bruce’s $13 million option has been picked up by the New York Mets, who also exercised an option on infielder Jose Reyes for next year’s major league minimum.

The White Sox declined a $3 million club option on reliever Matt Albers, who was 2-6 with a 6.31 ERA in 58 appearances last season.

The Cardinals have given manager Mike Matheny a three-year contract extension. The Cardinals have averaged 92 wins per season since Matheny took over after Tony La Russa retired following the World Series-winning 2011 season. The Cards were in the playoffs each of their first four seasons under Matheny before missing them this year.

The new general manager of the Twins is Thad Levine, who was the assistant GM for the Texas Rangers for the last 11 seasons. The 44-year-old previously worked for the Colorado Rockies and Los Angeles Dodgers. Levine will work under new chief baseball officer Derek Falvey as they attempt to revive a franchise that was a club-worst 59-103 this year.

PGA TOUR…

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Rod Pampling is the leader of the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas after flirting with a 59 in the opening round.

Pampling had to settle for an 11-under 60 following pars on his last two holes, but his two eagles and seven birdies allowed him to match the TPC Summerlin record. It was the lowest score of his career, topping the 10-under 61 he fired last year.

Brooks Koepka (KEHP’-kuh) and John Huh shot 62, and Billy Horschel had a 64.

In world and national news…

UNDATED (AP) — A federal judge in Las Vegas holds a hearing today on Democratic Party allegations of voter intimidation by Republicans in coordination with presidential candidate Donald Trump. The judge has said he’s skeptical but won’t rule until after the hearing. Democrats will argue a similar complaint today in New Jersey. Those are two of several cases around the country. The GOP denies the allegations.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — A registered sex offender from South Carolina is scheduled to appear in court today after a woman was found chained inside a large storage container on his rural property. Meanwhile, a search of the property resumed today for other possible victims after the rescued woman indicated there might be others. Todd Christopher Kohlhepp’s appearance is set for the afternoon.

MOSUL, Iraq (AP) — Iraqi special forces drew heavy fire today as they launched an assault deeper into the urban areas of Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city in an effort to reclaim it from Islamic State group militants. The day’s fighting has been the most intense urban combat in Mosul since the Iraqi offensive began more than two weeks ago.

FLORENCE, Italy (AP) — A Renaissance painting that was badly damaged in a 1966 flood in Florence, Italy will be unveiled to the public today after years of painstaking restoration. Giorgio Vasari painted “The Last Supper” in the 16th century on five large wood panels that together measure 6.6 by 2.6 meters (21.7 by 8.5 feet). The work was among thousands that were badly damaged and covered in mud when the Arno river broke its banks.
