MANDAN, N.D. (AP) — Authorities in North Dakota are investigating a report of multiple shots fired during a weekend protest against the construction of the Dakota Access oil pipeline.
Morton County sheriff’s spokesman Rob Keller on Sunday said the report of shots fired was received Saturday morning, when about 500 people were demonstrating outside a work yard for the pipeline in Mandan, a community adjacent to the state capital of Bismarck and about 50 miles north from an area where hundreds of protesters have been camping in for months. BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Former North Dakota Gov. Ed Schafer says Republican Doug Burgum will “tested” by his own party when he is sworn in as governor next month.
Burgum succeeded in being elected governor by running as an outsider, bucking what he called the “good old boy” party establishment and vowing to “reinvent state government.”
Burgum says that when the Legislature re-convenes in January, he and lawmakers must work together. He says North Dakota’s fiscal situation it is the “biggest challenge” ever to face the state.
Burgum takes office as the once red-hot state economy is slumping along with oil and crop prices.
Schafer, a Republican, served two terms as governor before leaving office in 2000. He says the fiscal situation is similar to when he took over in the 1992.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) — The rezoning of a piece of a hospital’s property in southwest Minot would be a major step toward construction of a new medical park.
The Minot Planning Commission has voted to recommend the City Council grant Trinity Health’s request to rezone about 44 acres from agricultural use to commercial.
The $275 million project calls for a connected six-story hospital and clinic building, as well as a spacious three-story facility for behavioral health services. Plans call for 208 beds throughout the center, including 157 nursing beds and a 20-bed intensive care unit.

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) — The illegal introduction of northern pike to Kettle Lake has threatened trout and perch populations that have driven anglers to use the lake north of Williston.
The Williston Herald reports the state Game and Fish Department is determining how the lake should be managed going forward.
Treatment to eradicate northern pike, a voracious predator, is costly and time consuming, especially if people continue to illegally stock the waters. Those who are caught doing so face a $350 fine and a misdemeanor charge.
North Dakota fisheries biologist Aaron Slominski says the department won’t treat the lake with rotenone, a natural chemical found in plants that keeps the fish’s gills from taking in oxygen, until spring 2017.
Slominski recently held a public meeting to gather angler input, but lack of attendance left the department unsure of how to proceed.

The second overtime pitted Logano against Busch for the victory, but the drivers began the day tied in the standings and any 1-2 finish between them would get both into the finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
Keven Harvick needed to win Sunday and was the favorite because he’s an eight-time Phoenix winner. He finished fourth and was eliminated.
