BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The Republican majority leaders in the North Dakota Legislature will have another two years in their jobs.
Dickinson Sen. Rich Wardner and Fargo Rep. Al Carlson were re-elected Tuesday night without opposition as the North Dakota Legislature’s GOP majority leaders.
Fessenden Sen. Jerry Klein was re-elected as the Republican assistant majority leader.
In the House, Minot Rep. Larry Bellew was elected as the new House speaker. He replaces Fargo Rep. Wesley Belter, who is retiring.
Cooperstown Rep. Don Vigesaa (VIHG’-uh-sah) was re-elected as the House Republican assistant majority leader.
Republicans emerged from last week’s elections adding to their supermajorities, including knocking out Democrats’ Senate and House minority leaders. Democrats will be electing their new leaders next month.
The 2017 Legislative session begins Jan. 3.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — State legislative leaders and the North Dakota Highway Patrol are expected to talk about the state Capitol grounds’ security measures this week as the 2017 session approaches.
The issue of security has become more pressing after multiple incidents in recent weeks at the Capitol in Bismarck involving protesters of the Dakota Access oil pipeline.
Earlier this month, over a dozen protesters were arrested in the judicial wing of the Capitol. Highway Patrol Lt. Tom Iverson says they were sitting, chanting, and singing and refused orders to leave.
Two individuals splattered motor oil on the sidewalk and glass doors of the west entrance to the Capitol on Halloween night. They also left a sign with a message appearing to be in solidarity with the protesters, who’ve been camping in Morton County in recent months.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota State University president has saved his job.
The state Board of Higher Education on Wednesday voted to renew Dean Bresciani’s (bruh-SHAW’-nee) contract, six months after the board told him he needed to improve his communication, teamwork and decision-making skills.
Not long after the board ultimatum, Bresciani became embroiled in another controversy over a media guidelines proposal for football. An outside investigator hired by the board determined that Bresciani did not violate board policy, but could have communicated better.
The board met behind closed doors for about three hours before voting to extend Bresciani’s contract for another year. Don Morton, of Fargo, was the only board member to vote against renewing the contract.
Bresciani was named NDSU president in May 2010. His current salary is about $355,000.
BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — U.S. officials say they’ve cancelled 15 oil and gas leases in an area bordering Glacier National Park that’s considered sacred to the Blackfoot tribes of the U.S. and Canada.
Interior Secretary Sally Jewell said the move to be announced Wednesday would preserve northwest Montana’s 130,000-acre Badger-Two Medicine area.
Details were obtained in advance by The Associated Press.
The Badger-Two Medicine is the site of the creation story for members of Montana’s Blackfeet Nation and the Blackfoot tribes of Canada.
The leases were issued in the 1980s and held by Oklahoma-based Devon Energy. No drilling has occurred.
The cancellation comes amid sometimes-violent protests over an oil pipeline being built near the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in North Dakota. The Obama administration has been criticized by some American Indians for its handling of that dispute.
This story has been corrected to locate reservation in North Dakota.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota Department of Health is scrambling to solve a number of legal issues in connection with the state’s newly-approved medical marijuana law.
Voters backed a measure that allows patients to use marijuana with a qualifying medical condition. But North Dakota Deputy State Health Officer Arvy Smith tells KFGO radio there are problems with the measure’s language that need to be fixed, perhaps during the legislative session.
Smith says medical marijuana distributors will not require medical training and patients will not need a doctor’s prescription to obtain the drug. The only requirement is that the designated caregivers or employees at the compassion center pass state and federal background checks.
Smith also says a number of health department employees are not comfortable with their roles in distributing the drug.

Vikings…
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings have finalized their contract with kicker Kai Forbath, their replacement for Blair Walsh.
Forbath kicked for New Orleans in 10 games last season after being let go by Washington after one game largely because the Redskins wanted to improve their kickoffs. Forbath made 87 percent of his field goal attempts (60 for 69) in three-plus seasons for Washington, the second-best rate in team history, but he had only 18 touchbacks in 2014, which was the second fewest in the league.
Between the Redskins and Saints in 2015, Forbath went 10 for 15 on field goals and 35 of 36 on extra points.
The Vikings also have signed rookie offensive tackle Rashod Hill off Jacksonville’s practice squad, after losing Jake Long for the season to an Achilles tendon injury.
MLB-CY YOUNG AWARDS…
UNDATED (AP) — Max Scherzer (SHUR’-zur) moved into exclusive company by earning more postseason hardware, while two of his former teammates battled it out for a similar honor.
Scherzer has become the sixth pitcher to win the Cy Young Award in both leagues, taking the National League prize by a wide margin. He picked up 25 of 30 first-place votes after leading the majors with 284 strikeouts and pacing the National League with 20 victories. Scherzer outdistanced Cubs hurlers Jon Lester and Kyle Hendricks in the balloting by members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.
Scherzer took the American League Cy Young Award in 2013 after going 21-3 with a 2.90 ERA. He joins Gaylord Perry, Pedro Martinez, Randy Johnson, Roger Clemens and Roy Halladay among pitchers with Cy Young plaques from each league.
Red Sox pitcher Rick Porcello has captured the AL Cy Young Award in a close vote with Justin Verlander of the Tigers. Verlander received 14 first-place votes compared to eight for Porcello. But the Boston hurler also claimed 18 second-place nods, while his former Detroit teammate picked up just two and was left off two ballots. Porcello led the majors with 22 wins this year and compiled a 3.15 ERA in 33 starts.
Cleveland’s Corey Kluber was third in the balloting.
Porcello, Verlander and Scherzer were part of Detroit’s starting rotation from 2010-14.

Obama arrived Wednesday night in Berlin from Greece, and dined last night with Chancellor Angela Merkel (AHN’-geh-lah MEHR’-kuhl). They’ll meet again this afternoon for talks. TOKYO (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump meets today with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe (shin-zoh ah-bay). During their New York meeting, Abe may try to sway Trump on the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a 12-country trade agreement that Trump opposes. It appears unlikely that Congress will ratify the treaty, which is expected to be discussed in a side meeting at the annual summit of the Asia Pacific Economic Community in Peru, where Abe heads after New York. President Barack Obama also will attend.
WASHINGTON (AP) — It was part pep talk and part funeral dirge. Hillary Clinton has made her first public appearance since her emotional concession speech last Wednesday. She told an annual gala of the Children’s Defense Fund last night that after losing the presidential election to Donald Trump, there were times when all she wanted to do was “to curl up with a good book or our dogs and never leave the house again.” But Clinton also told supporters to “never, ever give up” and that we should all “keep working to make America better and stronger and fairer.”
MOSCOW (AP) — The Russian military says it’s carried out an airstrike in northern Syria this week that killed at least 30 members of an al-Qaida-linked group, including some of its leaders. Russia has been carrying out a new wave of airstrikes on Syria, with the rebel-held part of the city of Aleppo facing its third consecutive day of heavy bombardment by Syrian government forces.
JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — An American man has been given a life in prison sentence after being convicted of drug smuggling by an Indonesian court. A court spokesman in Central Java says 56-year-old Philip Russel was arrested with seven other people in a drug raid on a furniture workshop in January. Officers found 214 pounds of methamphetamine hidden inside 54 electrical generators. Russell was accused of financing their import.
