BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Visitors to the North Dakota state Capitol grounds in recent weeks have seen a flurry of activity as construction crews prepare the foundation of the new governor’s residence before winter.
The project is already a few weeks ahead of schedule and is on track for completion next November.
North Dakota facility management director John Boyle says the goal is to have the foundation set by the end of the year so work can continue in the enclosed site through winter. Mild fall temperatures since groundwork began in late September have allowed workers to make good time in preparing the site.
Last year, the state Legislature authorized $4 million from North Dakota’s Capitol Building Fund and $1 million from private donations to build the new residence.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump has won Michigan’s 16 electoral votes. The Board of State Canvassers certified Trump’s victory Monday, saying he won by nearly 11,000 votes, a margin of two-tenths of a percentage point. That’s the closest presidential race in Michigan in more than 75 years. Trump’s win in Michigan gives the Republican 306 electoral votes to Democrat Hillary Clinton’s 232. A lawyer for Green Party candidate Jill Stein’s campaign says it will seek a recount in Michigan.
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Authorities are investigating whether Monday’s attack at Ohio State University was an act of terrorism. Police say a man deliberately plowed his car into a group of pedestrians outside a classroom building, then got out and started stabbing people with a butcher knife. Nine people were injured, one critically, before the assailant was shot to death by a police officer who happened to be nearby. The FBI and other agencies have joined the investigation.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House says President Barack Obama isn’t worried about his successor reversing his detente with Cuba. Donald Trump said today he “will terminate” Obama’s reestablishment of diplomatic ties and normalization of relations if Cuba isn’t willing to negotiate a better agreement.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Parts of the Deep South are expected to get some relief this week from a punishing drought. And that’s giving hope to crews fighting wildfires across the South. A tornado watch is in effect for western and northern Louisiana until this evening.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A woman who took a photo of a naked woman in a locker room and posted it on social media with insulting comments has pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor count of invasion of privacy. City News Service reports that the defendant, Dani Mathers, wasn’t in court Monday in Los Angeles when her attorney entered the plea on her behalf. The 29-year-old Playboy model faced widespread criticism after she shared the photo on Snapchat with the caption: “If I can’t unsee this then you can’t either.” She later apologized and deleted her social media accounts.
