BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The hundreds of arrests during the months of protests against the Dakota Access oil pipeline in North Dakota have created an unprecedented burden for the state’s court system.

Police have made nearly 575 arrests since August. State Court Administrator Sally Holewa (hoh-LEHV’-uh) says there aren’t enough judges, lawyers and clerks to handle the workload.

The state judicial system will ask the Legislature next year for an additional $1.5 million to cover protest-related costs. The organization that provides public defenders in North Dakota might seek an additional $670,000 from the Legislature.

Leaders of both organizations say such requests are highly unusual.

Holewa says the sheer volume of cases also raises concerns about the defendants’ right to a speedy trial and due process.

WATFORD CITY, N.D. (AP) — A nearly decade-long veteran of the McKenzie County Sheriff’s Office has been appointed to lead the department as removal proceedings against the sheriff move forward.

The e McKenzie County Commission unanimously voted to name Sgt. Matt Johansen interim sheriff. Commission chairman Richard Cayko says Johansen will continue to serve as sheriff until the next election cycle in 2018 if Gary Schwartzenberger is removed.

Gov. Jack Dalrymple suspended Schwartzenberger last week after an investigation by the state attorney general’s office into an alleged workplace culture of bullying and retaliation.

Some of the 15 people who testified in the investigation claimed Schwartzenberger seemed to favor some employees over others and was prone to angry outbursts.

Johansen ran for sheriff against Schwartzenberger in 2014 but didn’t advance beyond the primary election.

ST. THOMAS, N.D. (AP) — A St. Thomas man accused of shooting a man he found in his home with his wife is now accused of setting fire to his estranged wife’s home.

Thirty-one-year-old Brandon Thompson has been charged with arson, criminal mischief, disobeying a judicial order and simple assault. That’s on top of earlier charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault, terrorizing and reckless endangerment in the Oct. 13 shooting.

The fire happened earlier this month. It started in the garage and spread to the attic in the middle of the night.

Thompson’s attorney didn’t immediately respond to an Associated Press request for comment.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — The harvest of late-season crops has wrapped up in North Dakota, in time for the first big snowstorm of the season.

The Agriculture Department in its final weekly crop report for the 2016 growing season says the corn and soybean harvests ended on pace with the five-year average.

The report says three-fourths of North Dakota’s winter wheat crop is in good to excellent condition. Only 4 percent is rated poor or very poor.

Pasture and range conditions statewide are rated 48 percent good to excellent. Stock water supplies are 74 percent adequate to surplus.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota Commerce Commissioner Alan Anderson is retiring.

Gov. Jack Dalrymple appointed Anderson to the post in May 2011. Anderson says he’ll retire at the end of the year to spend more time with family.

In world and national news…

PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. (AP) — Wildfires that have been burning through parts of the Great Smoky Mountains have destroyed a resort, and forced thousands of people to flee to safety. The fire burned to the edge of the Dollywood theme park in Tennessee, after spreading overnight as winds gusted above 87 miles an hour. Hundreds of homes and other buildings, including a 16-story hotel, were damaged or destroyed. At least a dozen people have been taken to hospitals, including some with burns.

NEW YORK (AP) — A fierce critic of Obamacare is Donald Trump’s choice to head the Department of Health and Human Services. Trump says Republican Congressman Tom Price of Georgia is “exceptionally qualified” to lead an effort to repeal and replace President Barack Obama’s health care law. There’s also word  that Trump has chosen Elaine Chao to serve as transportation secretary. She’s a former labor secretary who is the wife of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Civil rights groups say President-elect Donald Trump should forcefully and publicly denounce racism and bigotry. They are pointing to more than 860 bias-related incidents recorded in the 10 days following his victory. The Southern Poverty Law Center says it compiled the list of incidents on its website and through the media in that time period. Anti-immigrant and anti-black hate incidents made up the largest number of claims. The group said it has not independently verified each claim but said it has weeded out any reported hoaxes.

CHICAGO (AP) — Hundreds of demonstrators at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago have been chanting outside terminals Tuesday, pushing for a $15 minimum hourly wage. As many as 500 workers at the airport were planning to strike Tuesday. Rallies are taking place in Detroit, Houston, New York and other cities — and in some cases, protesters have been blocking busy intersections. It’s part of a nationwide series of demonstrations calling for the higher minimum wage.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A judge in Los Angeles has sentenced former NFL star Darren Sharper to 20 years in prison for raping two women and drugging two others, but under terms that would total about half that time in custody. The sentencing marks the end of prosecutions in four states for the former all-pro safety who won a Super Bowl with the New Orleans Saints. Sharper pleaded no contest in a deal negotiated with prosecutors in four states. But the deal was superseded by a judge in New Orleans who said it was too lenient and sentenced Sharper to 18 years.
