Fargo (CSi-NDHP) On Thursday, December 1 , 2016 at approximately 4:30 pm, first responders were dispatched to an airplane crash south of Fargo in Cass County. The crash location was approximately ½ mile east of I-29 MM 55, along the Wild Rice River.
First Responders located a single aircraft that had crashed into the trees along the Wild Rice River. The aircraft had broken apart, but the fuselage was engulfed in flames in the tree line.
The preliminary investigation identified the pilot suffered an in-flight emergency shortly after taking off from Hector Field in Fargo and was possibly trying to make an emergency landing. The location of the crash was east of I-29 in a plowed field that abuts the Wild Rice River. The crash area encompasses an area to include the plowed field and the woodlands along the Wild Rice River.
The pilot, a 55 year old male, was killed in the crash. The pilot was the lone occupant of the aircraft. The aircraft was a 1973 Cessna Model 340.
The plane belonged to Weather Modification Inc., a private cloud seeding company.
The crash is being investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration. The FAA has asked any witnesses to the crash to contact them at (701) 492-5800 The NDHP will release the name of the deceased pilot this afternoon, pending notification of next of kin.
Jamestown (CSi) SAFE Shelter in Jamestown, in cooperation with the Anne Carlsen Center has announced a new project to provide short-term housing for victims of domestic and sexual violence.
Safe Shelter, Executive Director, Lynne Talley says while financial and construction details are not available, a sizeable gift from Mary Newman and a contribution of land from the Anne Carlsen Center will make “Mary’s Place” a reality.
The plan is to construct a building with three apartments for short-term emergency shelter. It will allow survivors and their children to avoid communal living in larger shelters, which Tally says are currently filled to capacity across the state. The facility will allow for a stay of up to four months while survivors plan their next step and wait for affordable housing.
Tally adds, Safe Shelter has been able to help locate safe, affordable housing fairly quickly for many years. But currently, finding affordable housing has become increasing difficult, with waits of three to six months. Tally says Stutsman County Housing Authority was forced to stop taking applications beginning December 1 because of a lack of funding from the federal Housing and Urban Development agency.
Mary Newman is providing the lead gift for the project. She and her late husband, Harold Newman, raised their family in Jamestown while building the highly successful Newman Signs. Mary Newman has supported domestic violence projects in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota and Grand Forks, North Dakota, prior to Thursday’s announcement.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Some military veterans are taking issue with other veterans’ plans to join a protest against the four-state, $3.8 billion Dakota Access pipeline in North Dakota.
North Dakota Veterans Coordinating Council president Russ Stabler says his organization is trying to discourage the 2,000 veterans with “Veterans Stand for Standing Rock” from going to the encampment starting Sunday.
Stabler says his group supports anyone who wants to protest peacefully, but believes the pipeline demonstrations have not been conducted in “the military manner in which our veterans behave.”
The Morton County Sheriff’s Department also released a video that features a veteran who is critical of the group.
The veterans’ group says they’re going to defend protesters against “assault and intimidation at the hands of the militarized police force” and pipeline security.
CANNON BALL, N.D. (AP) — So far, the protesters fighting the Dakota Access pipeline have shrugged off the heavy snow, icy winds and frigid temperatures that have swirled around their large encampment on the North Dakota grasslands.
But if they defy next week’s government deadline to abandon the camp, demonstrators know the real deep freeze lies ahead. That’s when the full weight of winter descends on their community of nylon tents and teepees. The season is bound to bring life-threatening wind chills and towering snow drifts.
The government has ordered protesters to leave federal land by Monday, but they insist they will stay for as long it takes to divert the $3.8 billion pipeline. The Standing Rock Sioux tribe believes it threatens sacred sites and a river that provides drinking water for millions of people.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The Ace Hardware chain is denying widely circulated reports that it was refusing to sell camping supplies to protesters demonstrating against the Dakota Access oil pipeline in North Dakota.
Some supporters of the protest tweeted what was said to be a statement from Ace that said stores near the area were asked by law enforcement officials to “refrain from selling material that could be used at the camps.” The largest encampment set up in opposition to the four-state, $3.8 billion pipeline has been called the largest gathering of Native American tribes in a century.
Ace spokeswoman Anna Wyrwas said in a statement Thursday that the chain hasn’t banned product sales at any Ace store. And a state official denies law enforcement ever ordered Ace to halt sales to demonstrators.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Speculation that Sen. Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota could be offered a job in President-elect Donald Trump’s cabinet comes as bittersweet news to a beleaguered state Democratic Party.
Heitkamp is scheduled to meet Trump today in New York City. She says she has received no details about the meeting.
Democrats in North Dakota have no elected state officials and are overwhelmed in the Legislature. Party leaders say a Heitkamp re-election campaign for senator would give the party a needed boost.
Should Heitkamp join the Trump administration, Democrats still have some hope because the state’s governor no longer has the authority to pick a replacement. Thanks to a Republican-sponsored bill passed during the last session, lawmakers changed the procedure to allow for a special election to fill vacancies for U.S. senators.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Slawson Exploration Company Inc. has agreed to settle alleged Clean Air Act violations in North Dakota.
The Department of Justice and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced the settlement Thursday. As part of the settlement, Slawson Exploration agreed to pay a $2.1 million civil penalty.
The settlement resolves claims that Slawson Exploration failed to adequately design, operate and maintain vapor control systems on its storage tanks at about 170 oil and natural gas well pads in North Dakota, resulting in emissions of volatile organic compounds — a key component in forming smog or ground-level ozone.
The Denver-based company agreed to improve emission control systems on its oil storage facilities in the Williston Basin.
Slawson Exploration president Todd Slawson says the company takes public health and environmental protection “very seriously.”

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Dez Bryant caught four passes for 84 yards and the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter, helping the Dallas Cowboys win their 11th straight game with a 17-15 victory over the Minnesota Vikings Thursday night.
Bryant’s 56-yard catch in the first half set up Ezekiel Elliott’s 1-yard plunge. The receiver caught an 8-yard scoring pass in the fourth quarter after a fumbled punt by Minnesota’s Adam Thielen.
Elliott rushed for 86 yards on 20 carries for the Cowboys (11-1). They have the longest single-season winning streak in franchise history.
Sam Bradford threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Jerick McKinnon with 25 seconds to play, but the 2-point conversion failed for the Vikings (6-6), who found out earlier on Thursday that coach Mike Zimmer would not be able to attend the game after having emergency eye surgery on Wednesday night.
Bradford completed 32 of 45 passes for 247 yards, Danielle Hunter had two sacks and Kai Forbath kicked three field goals for Minnesota, which has last six of the last seven games after a 5-0 start.
Sam Bradford left the game against Dallas after taking a hard hit to the ribcage area while following through on a pass attempt late in the second quarter.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Indiana football coach Kevin Wilson has abruptly resigned, less than a week after the Hoosiers became bowl-eligible for the second straight season.
Athletic director Fred Glass made the announcement during a hastily arranged news conference. He said defensive coordinator Tom Allen would be the permanent replacement, effective immediately.
Glass said the decision was made because of “philosophical differences.”
Indiana was 6-6 this season, 4-5 in the Big Ten. Wilson went 26-47 in six seasons in his first college head coaching job.
