Valley City (VCSU-CSi) Jamie Wirth, Ph.D., director of the Great Plains STEM Education Center at Valley City State University, has been named to Prairie Business magazine’s 2016 “40 Under 40” list, which recognizes 40 of the top business professionals under the age of 40 in the Dakotas and western Minnesota.
Also an assistant professor of mathematics at VCSU, Wirth is featured as one of the “40 Under 40” honorees in the December issue of Prairie Business magazine. The magazine recognizes young professionals who are making significant impacts in their chosen professions, industries and communities.
Also named to the list is Kristin Syverson, the chief financial officer at Interstate Engineering Inc. in Jamestown.
Syverson joined Interstate Engineering in 2011 as a marketing coordinator and was promoted to office manager and accounting manager before being named chief financial officer in 2015. She previously worked for Energizer Battery Co. in St. Louis, Mo.
Prairie Business is a magazine Editor, Lisa Gibson says, dedicated to the Northern Plains region that includes North Dakota, South Dakota and western Minnesota. The 40 Under 40 awards go to inspiring and dedicated professionals from the many industries of the region and who also impact the communities.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota lawmakers are preparing for the 2017 Legislature.
Newly elected lawmakers will take their ceremonial oaths of office shortly after the Legislature’s three-day organizational session begins Monday. Supreme Court Justice Dale Sandstrom is to administer the oaths in the House. Justice Carol Kapsner does the same in the Senate.
One of the session’s primary business items is to give committee assignments to each legislator. But lawmakers also get desk and parking space assignments and receive briefings on legislative procedures.
The organizational session closes Wednesday morning after Gov. Jack Dalrymple delivers his budget recommendations. The Legislature’s regular session begins Jan. 3.
CANNON BALL, N.D. (AP) Hundreds of demonstrators near the Dakota Access pipeline protest camp broke into cheers and chanted “water is life” in the Lakota Sioux language as news spread that the federal government won’t grant an easement for the project in southern North Dakota.
Some in the crowd banged drums.
Miles Allard of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe said he was pleased by the decision but remained cautious, saying opponents of the pipeline “don’t know what Trump is going to do.”
Allard says he’s been telling his people “to stand up and not to leave until this is over.”
Carla Youngbear of the Meskwaki Potawatomi tribe traveled from central Kansas to be at the protest site. She says she has grandchildren and is going to have great-grandchildren who will need water and that’s why she was there.
The Morton County Sheriff’s Office says that it has lifted the blockade on a bridge north of the large Dakota Access oil pipeline protest encampment.
In a statement, it said that it won’t be near the bridge as long as protesters stick to the conditions outlined on Saturday, including only coming to the bridge for predetermined meetings with law enforcement.
The release did not comment on the U.S. Army Corps’ decision to not grant an easement for the four-state, $3.8 billion pipeline under Lake Oahe, a Missouri River reservoir from which the Standing Rock Sioux tribe gets its drinking water.
The large Oceti Sakowin camp is south of the Backwater Bridge, and several hundred people are camped there.
U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch says that the Department of Justice will still monitor the protest in North Dakota and is ready to “provide resources” for those who “can play a constructive role in easing tensions.”
North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple said in a statement that the Corps’ decision “is a serious mistake,” ”prolongs the serious problems” that law enforcement faces and “prolongs the dangerous situation” of people camping in cold, snowy conditions.
North Dakota Republican Rep. Kevin Cramer says that the Army Corps’ decision not to grant an easement for the Dakota Access oil pipeline is “a very chilling signal” for the future of infrastructure in the U.S.
Cramer said in a statement that infrastructure will be hard to build “when criminal behavior is rewarded this way,” apparently referring to the large protest encampment on federal land and the clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement.
Devils Lake (CSi) The North Dakota Highway Patrol reports, a 28-year-old Devils Lake man died Saturday, after he was ejected when his pickup went into a ditch about 7:50 a.m. 13 miles northeast of Devils Lake on Ramsey County Road No. 3.
The patrol says Darell Sainsbury was northbound on the road driving a 2001 Ford F150 pickup when the vehicle drifted into the east ditch. Sainsbury attempted to correct the action and lost control of the pickup, which crossed the road and rolled in the west ditch.
Sainsbury was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected and died at the scene.
WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) — Figures show North Dakota residents seeking an associate degree spend an average of $11,535 annually, but some of those degrees will lead to higher wages and some won’t.
U.S. Department of Education data show some North Dakota two-year campuses garner higher wages for their students, a nearly $16,000 difference between the highest and lowest salary averages from the top 10 two-year schools.
There doesn’t seem to be any correlation between cost to attend and average salary.
The North Dakota State College of Science outranks the other nine schools with an average salary of $41,300, based on IRS reports for students 10 years after attending college.
Students pay nearly $10,600 annually at the college, which is $130 less than Dickinson State University. Data show that Dickinson State students average $2,500 less in salary than NDSCS students.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) — A Bismarck man accused of sexually abusing a young relative claims he is not responsible because he was asleep when it happened.
The abuse allegedly happened in May 2015.
The lawyer for Aaron Michael Dietrich, 22, says an expert hired by the defense diagnosed Dietrich with a sleep disorder called sexomnia.
Judge Todd Cresap said he couldn’t decide how the state will try the case and signed a court order for additional evaluations on Dietrich’s disorder and alleged crime.
The state will wait for the results of the evaluations before scheduling a jury trial date.
Dietrich faces up to 20 years in prison and would be required to register as a sex offender.
MANDAN, N.D. (AP) — A project to repurpose a former Mandan school into affordable apartments can move forward after a funding package has come through.
The Wisconsin-based Commonwealth Companies will continue with the $8.3 million housing project after receiving help from the North Dakota Finance Agency.
Construction on the apartments will start in March and includes 39 units, six of which will be designated permanent supportive housing for those who have experienced homelessness.
The plans for the building constructed in 1917 also include a wellness center, chapel, community rooms and outdoor playground.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Easton Stick threw three touchdown passes on Saturday and North Dakota State beat San Diego 45-7, taking its first postseason step toward a sixth straight FCS championship in a second-round playoff game.
The top-seeded Bison (11-1) will get a chance to avenge their only loss when they play host to South Dakota State in the quarterfinals. SDSU beat NDSU 19-17 on the last play of the game in the regular-season meeting in Fargo.
Stick completed 12 of 20 passes for 208 yards and ran four times for 99 yards. He threw TD passes of 16 and 49 yards to Chase Morlock and 11 yards to RJ Urzendowski.
The Bison defense got into the act when MJ Stumpf returned an interception 35 yards for a touchdown with 10:49 left in the first quarter.
The Toreros finally got on the board on Anthony Lawrence’s 1-yard TD pass to Ross Dwelley with 6:56 left in the third quarter.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — Griffin Trau kicked an 18-yard field goal as time expired, capping a 17-point comeback and sending Richmond to a 27-24 win over seventh-seeded North Dakota in the second round of the FCS playoffs on Saturday.
The Spiders (10-3) got into field goal range thanks to a 54-yard pass from Kevin Johnson to Tyler Wilkins on third-and-14 earlier on the drive. Richmond moved the ball 17 yards in the next three plays, and Trau’s game-winner tucked inside the left upright as the clock hit zeroes.
North Dakota (9-3) led 24-7 early in the third quarter after Demun Mercer’s second touchdown catch from Keaton Studsrud. Mercer had five catches for 122 yards.
Johnson, who threw for 260 yards and two touchdowns, ran for a 9-yard score late in the third to pull Richmond within 24-14. The Spiders blocked a punt and converted field position into a field goal to get within a touchdown, and Johnson found Garrett Hudson for an 8-yard score to tie it at 24 with 5:24 remaining.
Richmond travels to second-seeded Eastern Washington next Saturday for a quarterfinals matchup.
Aberdeen (VCSUVikings.com) The Valley City State University basketball teams capped a perfect start to conference play Saturday with a doubleheader sweep at Presentation College.
The Viking women rallied in the fourth quarter for a 66-59 victory, while the men blistered the nets for an 88-82 win in the nightcap. It was the second straight sweep for the Vikings, who won both games at Mayville State on Friday night.

Valley City (VCSU CSi) – The Valley City State University men’s basketball team has added to its 2017 recruiting class with the addition of Hunter McCalla.
Viking head coach Ryan Montgomery announced McCalla has signed a letter of intent to attend VCSU and play basketball for the Vikings starting this fall.
A native of Becker, Minn., McCalla is currently in his senior season at Becker High School. Montgomery says the 6-foot-4 McCalla is a bigger guard who can shoot the ball well.
Montgomery says, “We needed shooting in this class and Hunter helps fill that void. We also love his ability to pass the ball. At 6-foot-4, he can handle, distribute, and shoot the ball making him a great fit for VCSU basketball.”
McCalla averaged 10 points, seven rebounds, four assists, two steals and one block per game last season as he helped Becker to a 14-14 overall record. He is a two-time All Conference Honorable Mention in basketball and was named Most Dedicated. He has also excelled in soccer, earning two All Conference awards.
McCalla plays his summer basketball with the Comets Elite DLR team. He is the son of Kory McCalla and Tracy McCalla, and plans to study business while at VCSU.
He joins Collin Trottier (6-foot-7 forward, West Fargo Sheyenne) as VCSU’s announced recruits for the 2017 class.
Valley City State University is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and a conference member of the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA). The Vikings are currently 7-4 this season as they enter conference play. Last season, the men’s basketball team posted a 22-11 overall record and advanced to the second round of the NAIA National Tournament for just the second time in school history.
