Jamestown (CSi) The James River Humane Society reminds those with pets to make sure they stay safe during the dangerously cold temperatures, and wind chills.
On Friday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, Vice President Matt Opsahl said, not to let pets outdoors longer than needed so they don’t have “accidents,” in the house.
He said the animal’s paw pads freeze quickly, adding that road chemicals and road salt burn their paws.
Hay bales may be used for insulation around the outside of dog houses.
Make sure anti-freeze is out of the reach of pets in garages, as the chemical can be deadly if ingested.
He noted that at the shelter the dogs are let outside for a short time, and then back inside.
Donations of blankets are welcome and may be dropped off at Hugo’s or at the shelter.
On another topic, he said the shelter is looking for a paid position for a person to work every other weekend, from 7-a.m., to noon, to take care of the dogs.
Contact the James River Humane Society for more information at 252-0747, or drop off a resume, or an application form from Jamestown Jobs Service, to the shelter, located off the I-94 Bloom Exit.
He pointed out that volunteers are needed to work evenings.
Presently the shelter is full with 15 dogs, and 25 cats.
On line visit the James River Humane Society at: jamesriverhumanesociety.org with links to petfinder.com
The shelter is open seven days a week from 9-a.m. to noon, and 5:30-p.m., to 6:30-p.m., or by appointment to view the animals.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A grease fire on a stove is being blamed for a fire that displaced residents of a 12-unit apartment building in Bismarck.
No one was hurt in the Sunday afternoon blaze in the three-story building. Fire damage was confined to the apartment where the blaze began, but other units had smoke or water damage.
Officials estimate damage at more than $100,000. The Red Cross is helping the displaced residents.
MOORHEAD, Minn. (AP) — Moorhead police have arrested a 19-year-old man from Fargo, North Dakota, after a road rage incident this weekend.
Officers were called Saturday afternoon after a passenger in a vehicle reportedly pointed a handgun at passengers in another vehicle after they honked their horn at the suspect vehicle.
Police tracked down the suspect vehicle and found two men inside the car. One of the men was arrested and booked into the Clay County Jail on several tentative charges, including making terroristic threats.
Police searched the vehicle and found three replica handguns, one of them matching the description given by the victims. No real firearms were found.
The suspect makes his first court appearance Monday.
CANNON BALL, N.D. (AP) — Activists who joined the Dakota Access pipeline protest in southern North Dakota say they’ll take what they learned to their fights back home.
Activists say the protest is giving the environmental movement a new method of fighting and that it has fomented opposition to other projects.
Washington resident Rob Lewis says he was drawn to the Native Americans’ argument that nature is sacred as its case for preserving the environment. He says environmentalists’ scientific approach has turned off others in the past.
North Carolina resident Tara Cook joined a veterans group who came to the main camp last weekend. She’s involved with the Black Lives Matter movement back home and says her community could learn from the protests, which she thought were peaceful, prayerful and disciplined.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) — The City of Minot has filed for dismissal of a 2015 discrimination case brought by a former city attorney over her employment termination.
The Minot Daily News reports that Colleen Auer alleges she was terminated from her job for reporting sex-based harassment by then acting city manager Cindy Hemphill. Auer argues Hemphill contrasted her work style, communication skills and demeanor with her male predecessor as well as traditional gender stereotypes. She claims the city violated state law by firing her in retaliation for her complaining about the harassment to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
The city stated in a brief last month that dismissal is appropriate because Auer’s claims lack evidence.
The case, if not dismissed, will proceed toward a tentative trial date in May 2017.
DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) — Public officials, military leaders and others gathered in Devils Lake to send off a North Dakota National Guard unit that will spend about a year serving overseas.
About 60 members of the 136th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion will get final training at Fort Hood in Texas before deploying in January to Afghanistan.
A public ceremony to see them on their way was held Sunday afternoon at the Devils Lake High School Sports Center. Gov. Jack Dalrymple, the state’s congressional delegation and state Guard commander Maj. Gen. Alan Dohrmann were on hand.
Soldiers in the unit come from more than 25 communities across North Dakota, Minnesota and Kentucky.
WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) — Williston officials are preparing a draft proposal to regulate cell tower installations by internet and cellphone service providers.
The Williston Herald reports that meetings were held recently to gather feedback from local technology companies, business owners and school administrators. City officials hope the meetings will result in a new ordinance that considers technology needs, aesthetics and residents’ health concerns.
Many cellphone and internet towers are installed on light poles or located in discreet locations throughout the city. Around 300 wood poles with towers are located throughout Williston.
Local companies offered no objection to the planned ordinance, and agreements are already in place between the area’s internet providers and power companies.
The draft will be presented to the City Commission when completed.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Several critical access hospitals and organizations that assist the developmentally disabled will receive millions in dollars mandated by lawmakers early next year.
The North Dakota Board of University and School Lands recently approved $5 million for oil patch critical access hospitals and $1 million for groups assisting the developmentally disabled.
State Land Commissioner Lance Gaebe says a total of 16 critical access hospitals in western North Dakota were eligible for the Oil and Gas Impact Grant Fund dollars and that eight applied for grants. All eight requests go to help offset debt acquired from uncompensated care.
The largest requests approved are $2.04 million for CHI St. Alexius Health Dickinson and $1.72 million for McKenzie Healthcare Systems in Watford City.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota will have a first lady when Gov.-elect Doug Burgum is sworn into office on Thursday.
The 60-year-old Fargo businessmen announced his marriage to Kathryn Helgaas of Fargo in a Facebook post on Sunday.
It was no secret that the two were engaged. Burgum said he and Helgaas were married “recently” in a small ceremony with immediate family.
The Republican Burgum defeated Democrat Marvin Nelson and Libertarian Marty Riske in the November election. He’ll succeed Jack Dalrymple in the governor’s office.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A popular Twin Cities pianist known for performing in theaters and auditoriums has upset some of her neighbors by hosting recital parties at her home.
Residents near Lorie Line’s home on Lake Minnetonka have complained to Orono city leaders about the extra traffic in the streets and the lack of regulation. The Star Tribune reports that the controversy has prompted officials in the affluent suburb to review how it regulates private events.
Line and her husband, Tim, who have lived in Orono for nearly 30 years, say the grievances are overblown and that their house is not being turned into a concert hall. Lorie Line says it’s “the most stupid thing I’ve ever heard.”
The Lines currently are on tour in the Dakotas, Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Reggie Lynch and Jordan Murphy each had a double-double and Minnesota pulled away to beat Northern Illinois 77-57 Sunday.
Lynch scored 11 of his career-high tying 18 points in the second half. His 11 rebounds were two off a career best.
Murphy had 12 points and 10 rebounds for Minnesota (10-1). Nate Mason finished with 11 points and Akeem Springs and Dupree McBrayer had 10.
The Huskies (4-5) lost for the fourth time in five games. They were led by Marshawn Wilson’s 18 points. Dontel Highsmith had 10.
Northern Illinois has lost 14 straight games to Big Ten opponents since Dec. 14, 1999.
Lynch, a redshirt junior, and Murphy, a sophomore, combined for 12 of Minnesota’s first 21 second-half points as the Gophers, who led BY six at the break, built a 50-38 lead. Springs, who played two seasons at Northern Illinois, had a 3-pointer and layup in that stretch.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Kaela Davis had 20 points off six 3-pointers and Allisha Gray 18 points as No. 6 South Carolina bounced back from its only loss with a 98-58 blowout of Minnesota on Sunday.
The Gamecocks (7-1) finished with 16 3-pointers, the most in coach Dawn Staley’s nine seasons and second most in program history behind the 17 against Western Carolina in 1994.
Davis, a Georgia Tech transfer who came off the bench for the first time this season, was a big reason for South Carolina’s outside success. She hit five of her first six shots from behind the arc as the Gamecocks built a 57-27 halftime lead.
Kenisha Bell led Minnesota (7-4) with 16 points. Carlie Wagner, the Gophers’ leading scorer at 20.7 points a game, missed her first nine shots and finished with six points.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Matt Dumba, Nino Niederreiter and Mikael Granlund scored, Devan Dubnyk made 22 saves and the Minnesota Wild held on to beat the St. Louis Blues 3-1 on Sunday night for their fourth straight win.
Dumba scored for the second straight game in the second period and Niederreiter got his eighth goal about seven minutes later. Granlund added an empty-net goal.
Vladimir Tarasenko scored his 14th goal of the season for St. Louis. Jake Allen stopped 22 shots for the Blues, who had won five of their past seven games.
After a scoreless first period in which the Wild managed just six shots on goal, Dumba’s wrist shot put Minnesota ahead just 45 seconds into the second. The young defenseman brought the puck up the center of the ice and casually sent the puck on net, beating Allen high to the stick side.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Matt Asiata scored on a short touchdown run, Kai Forbath kicked four field goals and the Minnesota Vikings beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 25-16 on Sunday, winning for just the second time in nine weeks.
Asiata had a chance to score three times, but he was stopped on a fourth-and-goal run in the second quarter and fumbled at the goal line in the fourth.
Those mistakes hardly hurt against the hapless Jaguars (2-11), who dropped their eighth consecutive game and fell to 0-6 at EverBank Field this season.
Minnesota (7-6) hadn’t won on the road since Sept. 25 at Carolina. A loss to the Jaguars would have weakened their playoff chances.
Sam Bradford completed 24 of 34 passes for 292 yards and a touchdown. His 3-yard TD toss to Kyle Rudolph with 2:13 remaining sealed the victory. Bradford did even more damage on deep throws early.
Aaron Rodgers completed 18 of his 23 passes for 246 yards and three touchdowns as the Green Bay Packers hammered the Seahawks, 38-10.
Tennessee remains tied with Houston following the Titans’ 13-10 win over Denver.
Matthew Stafford ran for a go-ahead, 7-yard touchdown with 3:17 left in the fourth quarter before the Lions held on for a 20-17 win over the Chicago Bears.
Chris Thompson’s 25-yard touchdown run with 1:54 remaining gave the Redskins a 27-22 victory over the Eagles.
