FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A University of North Dakota pathologist says human remains found during a search west of Fargo earlier this month are those of a missing Twin Cities woman.

Forty-five-year-old Michelle Newell, of Vadnais Heights, Minnesota, was last seen alive in Cass County, North Dakota, in late August. Authorities say the suspect in Newell’s death, 51-year-old Timothy Barr, of Lakeville, Minnesota, provided information that led deputies to the remains.

Prosecutors have alleged Barr indicated to informants that he argued with Newell over methamphetamine and accidentally ran her over before disposing of her body.

Barr is jailed on felony charges of manslaughter and failing to stop in an accident involving death or injury. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 17.

Barr’s public defender, Mark Beauchene, declined to comment.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A 31-year-old man has been charged with murder in the Christmas Eve stabbing death of another man in a south Fargo home.

Court documents accuse Timothy Porter of stabbing 26-year-old Derek Lynn Bjarnason (bee-YARN’-ah-son) in the chest with a samurai-style knife at Porter’s home early Saturday morning. Bjarnason died later that day at a Fargo hospital.

Porter and a woman who was at the scene told authorities that Bjarnason attacked Porter during a night of drinking. Porter said he was defending himself when he grabbed the knife from between seat cushions of a couch and stabbed Bjarnason once in the chest.

Police say Porter’s upper lip was swollen and he was bleeding from the mouth when authorities arrived at his home.

Court documents do not list an attorney for Porter.

SHELDON, N.D. (AP) — Authorities say a man who stole a pickup from a fire station in North Dakota led a team of deputies on a chase over icy roads and narrowly beat an oncoming train before he was arrested.

WDAY-TV reports fire officials say the Fargo man was rummaging through property in Sheldon, looking for a ride to Enderlin. Larry Wayman says his son called 911 when he found the man inside his home. Authorities say the suspect eventually made his way to the fire station where got his hands on a pickup truck and took off.

Wayman joined deputies in tailing the truck on ice-covered back roads. He says he saw the suspect break through a stop arm at a railroad crossing just before a train blew through.

Deputies caught up with the man after a nine-mile chase Monday.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Bismarck is on track to beat the seasonal snowfall record.

Rick Krolak, observing program leader at the Bismarck office of the National Weather Service, tells The Bismarck Tribune the average seasonal total is 51.2 inches. The city has already seen 43.5 inches of snow as of Tuesday.

Krolak says it’s possible the city could get a record snowfall, but that he can’t predict for certain when it could happen.

National Weather Service data show the year-to-date record was set in 2008, with 45.8 inches of snow falling between July and December. The city currently trails the year-to-date record by 2.3 inches.

Krolak says North Dakota has had some unusual systems this season called “Colorado lows,” which usually dump a lot of snow in fall or spring.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A program that helped subsidize affordable housing in western North Dakota’s oil patch will expire at the end of the year.

Lawmakers and Gov. Doug Burgum are signaling that they have no appetite to renew it amid a lackluster state economy.

The North Dakota Housing Finance Agency has issued $65 million in tax credits since it began in 2011.

The program gives individual and business donors a dollar-for-dollar tax credit to subsidize construction of affordable dwellings. Officials say it has helped build more than 2,300 rental units.

North Dakota Petroleum Council President Ron Ness says the housing program has been “extremely valuable,” but now has likely has outlived its usefulness.

Ness says the housing market in western North Dakota’s oil patch “has adjusted,” with additional units and lower rents.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL-BOWL GAMES

Hurricanes, Wildcats earn bowl upsets

UNDATED (AP) — Wednesday wasn’t kind to ranked teams college football bowl action. No. 14 West Virginia’s offense stalled against Miami, and 22nd-ranked Pittsburgh fell to a team that had won just one bowl game since Harry Truman was re-elected.

Miami ended a 10-year bowl drought with a 31-14 romp over the Mountaineers in the Russell Athletic Bowl. Brad Kaaya tied a career high with four touchdown passes while completing 24 of 34 passes for 282 yards. West Virginia entered the game averaging more than 500 yards a game before the Hurricanes held the Mountaineers to 229.

Justin Jackson ran for 226 yards and three touchdowns to lead Northwestern’s 31-24 win over the Panthers in the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium. Jaskcon had TD runs of 8 and 16 yards in the second quarter, then went deep on a 40-yard burst in the third. It’s just the third-ever bowl win for the Wildcats following the 1948 Rose Bowl and 2012 Gator Bowl.

In other bowl finals:

— Jesse Ertz ran for two touchdowns and threw for another as Kansas State held off Texas A&M, 33-28 to win the Texas Bowl. BERLIN (AP) — Prosecutors in western Germany say the man accused of carrying out last week’s deadly truck attack in Berlin, was also suspected of collecting asylum-seeker benefits in two German towns. German officials say Anis Amri, who’s believed to have driven the truck that plowed into a Christmas market, killing 12 people, was investigated for fraud earlier this year, but the investigation was shelved because his whereabouts were unknown. Days after the Berlin attack, a police officer killed Amri in Italy.
