WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) — An Arizona woman has been sentenced to 55 days in jail for causing a crash that killed one man and injured two others in North Dakota.

27-year-old Lacey Eckert was charged with negligent homicide and two counts of aggravated reckless driving for the 2015 crash in McKenzie County. She pleaded guilty to the charges Wednesday.

Prosecutors say Eckert ran a stop sign at the intersection of Highway 73 and Highway 22 early in the morning of Dec. 1, 2015, and crashed into an SUV.

The driver, 36-year-old Phillip Taggart, was killed. His passenger, Ryan Jerke, was injured.

Craig Bruyere, who was driving a semitrailer, was also injured after slamming into the collision moments later.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Four major storms in a month’s span with record snow are causing hardships for ranchers in the Dakotas.

But their livestock appear to have made it through the rough start to winter in decent shape.

Rancher groups say livestock deaths appear to be minimal. And the Agriculture Department estimates animal losses to be mostly “average” to “light.”

Western South Dakota rancher Jon Millar says he has 2 feet of snow on his ranch compared to nearly none at this time last year. He says he’s lost fewer than half a dozen animals, though.

But more snow means more work for ranchers to care for livestock, more stress on equipment and less time for other things. Julie Ellingson with the North Dakota Stockmen’s Association says, “there are no ‘snow days’ for ranchers.”

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A state legislative committee is endorsing a move from two to one license plate for North Dakota drivers.

The House Transportation Committee is recommending passage to the full House. Gas station and convenience store owners oppose a single license plate, saying it’s tougher for catch criminals who drive away without paying for gas.

Missouri Valley Petroleum spokesman Larry Froehlich says gas stations may average one or two drive-offs per day which adds up to a significant financial impact for the businesses.

The North Dakota Peace Officers Association agrees with the gas station owners. The association’s Bruce Burkett says the front plate is often the first contact officers have as they pass a vehicle.

The Bismarck Tribune reports the latest data from AAA says 19 states allow just one license plate.

Update…

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James says the military believes an engine that dropped from a B-52 bomber during a training mission over North Dakota suffered a “catastrophic failure” and disintegrated.

Officials at Minot Air Force Base say an in-flight emergency was declared Wednesday and the crew landed the plane safely. No injuries were reported on the ground or among the plane’s five crew members.

The Air Force says the engine fell in a remote area about 25 miles northeast of the base near Minot, about 110 miles north of Bismarck. James tells the Minot Daily News the engine wreckage is believed to be at the bottom of a river.

Maj. Jamie Humphries tells radio station KFGO-AM the plane wasn’t carrying any weapons.

The investigation is expected to take months.
