Jamestown  (CSi)  Anyone present at a party early Sunday morning in Jamestown is asked to contact Jamestown Police, after a rifle was believed to have been accidentally discharged.

Lt. Justin Blinsky reports that the investigation involves possible negligence or recklessness, and that it’s not believed at this point in the investigation that the rifle was fired intentionally or at an individual, as bullet struck the ceiling.

The incident took place at a Southeast Jamestown business, about 2:15 a.m.

Under Marsy’s Law, the business’ name and location is not being released, in connection with the vicitm’s affiliation with the location.

Anyone who was present at the location when the incident occurred should contact the police department by calling 252-2414.

Bismarck  (CSi)  The North Dakota Aeronautics Commission  reports the state’s commercial service airports ended 2016 with a statewide total of 1,049,457 passenger boarding’s, an 11% decrease from 2015′s total of 1,176,043.

The news release says, “The eight commercial service airports in the state currently provide incredible value and opportunities to each community and the current low price of oil has also helped to reduce the overall cost of airline tickets to the flying public.”

Jamestown, Bismarck, and Devils Lake broke passenger numbers for 2016.

Jamestown’s final totals in 2016 were 11,123 passengers, compared to 7,996 boarding’s in 2015. The airport is now expected to receive more funding for future projects and expansion after going over the 10,000 passenger mark.

Minot, Dickinson and Williston saw the largest decline, which the commission attributes to the decline in workforce in the Western oil fields.

Jamestown  (CSi) Family and Friends gathered Friday afternoon, at the Stutsman County Courthouse for the  formal Investiture Ceremony for newly elected Southeast District Court Troy LeFevre.

Valley City (CSi)  Valley City Mayor Dave Carlsrud has announced that the “Coffee With The Mayor,” gatherings have been discontinued.

He thanks Valley City citizens for supporting the program, however there was not the community interest in attending.

He says during his mayoral campaign individuals thought  it was a good  idea.  He adds, that the fact the gatherings were not well attended might be  a good sign that the community may be going in a positive direction.

He says residents that want coffee, are invited to stop in at his City Hall office or call or e-mail any concerns.

CAVALIER, N.D. (AP) — Hundreds of people gathered in a small North Dakota town to celebrate the life of a husband, father and Navy SEAL who died in a kayaking accident off the Virginia coast.

Devon Grube grew up in the community of Cavalier where family, friends and others attended a memorial service at the public school gym Sunday. The 35-year-old Grube died Dec. 28, with six months of service left as a Navy SEAL.

Grube enlisted in the Navy following the 9/11 terrorist attacks and served tours in Afghanistan, Europe and Africa. His commander, John Clift, said that as a community of brotherhood warriors, his fellow SEALS would answer the call when his family needed them.

Grube’s widow, Margie, spoke to the crowed about her promise to keep her husband’s spirit alive by channeling his humor, strength and love.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s 65th legislative session is well underway and lawmakers are set to consider bills that range from medical marijuana to a state employee hiring freeze.

Lawmakers want more time to solve a number of issues in connection with the state’s voter-approved medical marijuana law. A joint House and Senate meeting is slated Monday to consider a proposal to delay the law at least until the end of July.

Leaders of the Republican-led Legislature also are pushing legislation this that would prohibit state agencies to fill any vacant positions until the end of April.

The Legislature also is slated to take out an additional $8 million loan this week through the state-owned Bank of North Dakota to help pay the policing bill for Dakota Access pipeline protests.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A former Mercer County jailer who shot up a hotel in western North Dakota won’t serve any prison time.

Judge Bruce Haskell gave 27-year-old Michael Peterson, of Hazen, a suspended sentence of one year at Friday’s hearing. The Bismarck Tribune reports that means if he stays sober and out of trouble for two years, he’ll stay free.

Police say Peterson drunkenly fired a rifle about 32 times on Feb. 28 at the Dakota Farms Inn in Beulah. No one was injured. He pleaded guilty to four counts of reckless endangerment in November. Two counts of attempted murder were dismissed.

Defense attorney Tom Dickson called the incident an “alcohol-infused moment of pure stupidity.”

Peterson apologized. He said he has a job, underwent treatment and has been sober for 11 months.

MILES CITY, Mont. (AP) — A toy poodle who ran away after a car crash in eastern Montana has been reunited with its owners after managing to survive in severe winter weather for over a week.

LJ disappeared after LeRoy and Jorjan Woodward of Fairview, North Dakota went into a ditch after hitting a patch of ice near Miles City on Dec. 29. They weren’t seriously hurt.

The Miles City Star reports that lost dog ads ran in the newspaper and area radio stations asking people to keep an eye out for the dog. More than a week after the crash on Jan. 6, Glendive teacher Charles Phipps spotted him about a half-mile from the crash site and called authorities who managed to get the dog into a patrol car. He had lost some weight but was in good condition otherwise.

FORT YATES, N.D. (AP) — Sitting Bull College is paving the way for master’s degree programs at tribal colleges in North Dakota.

Its latest program focuses on studies of water quality. The college’s two-year master’s program began in fall 2014, and its first two students graduated this past spring.

The school’s agriculture division director, Gary Halvorson, says both the graduates have gotten good jobs and that he expects the master’s program to continue growing as other students see it boost graduates’ chances of being successful after graduation.

Halvorson says the college is hoping to diversify its master’s offerings in upcoming years with a new subject area.

United Tribes Technical College in Bismarck is also planning to offer a master’s in education within the next three years.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — The Minot area’s emergency shelter services for women and children have been facing high demand.

The  Minot Housing Authority has nearly 500 households on a waiting list for housing vouchers, but moving from that waiting list into housing can take more than the two months Minot YWCA allows women to stay.

The YWCA’s shelter can house up to 17 people, and permits boys up to age 12. Women staying at the shelter must test clean of drugs to be allowed in.

Minot YWCA executive director Lauren Moore says the shelter has had to turn many women away and refer them to shelters in other cities. She says a variety of factors contribute to homelessness, including housing costs, domestic violence and job losses.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — Leaders in the unmanned aircraft industry are trying to persuade young people who think drones are cool to consider flying them for a living.

Commercial pilots must obtain a Federal Aviation Administration drone license, and some companies that employ such pilots have started selling classes that help students prepare for the FAA test or just figure out whether they would be interested in such a career.

SkySkopes, a Grand Forks company that employs unmanned aircraft pilots, is offering an online class for students as well as a separate flight certification course. The 20-week course is also being offered remotely through the North Dakota Center For Distance Education.

Seventeen-year-old North Dakota high school student Ava Niemeier says she’s looking at SkySkopes Academy because she’s interested in using drones to make movies.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE PLAYOFFS

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP)— It was a nail-biter but Green Bay Packers fans will take it. Mason Crosby boomed a 51-yard field goal at the final gun to give the Packers a tense 34-31 win over the top-seeded Dallas Cowboys. The big play in Green Bay’s game-winning drive was a 36-yard completion from Aaron Rodgers to Jared Collins on a third-and-20 situation in the final minute.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP)— Pittsburgh’s Chris Boswell booted six field goals for an NFL postseason record to give the Pittsburgh Steelers just enough offense in their 18-16 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. The Steelers, who have won nine straight game, are moving on to meet the Patriots next Sunday in Foxborough in the AFC championship and a spot in the Super Bowl.

UNDATED (AP) — The NFL’s final foursome is set. The Green Bay Packers are going to Atlanta to play the Falcons in next Sunday’s NFC championship. In the AFC title game on Sunday, the top-seeded New England Patriots will host the Pittsburgh Steelers in a rematch of an Oct. 23 game when the Patriots beat the Steelers 27-16 when they were without quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who was out with a knee injury.

TOP-25 COLLEGE BASKETBALL

UNDATED (AP) — At least No. 22 Cincinnati didn’t lose. That was the only thing that pleased coach Mick Cronin.

The Bearcats beat East Carolina 55-46 for their eighth straight win, behind 16 points and 11 rebounds from Kyle Washington. But Cronin was not pleased, saying afterward: “The only place we won today was on the scoreboard. We didn’t get better today. We got worse.”

In the only other game involving a team ranked in the AP Top-25, Chimezie Metu scored a career-high 24 points, including a go-ahead hook shot with 29 seconds remaining, and No. 25 Southern California held off slumping Colorado 71-68. The Buffaloes have lost five straight.

PGA-SONY OPEN

HONOLULU (AP) — Justin Thomas cruised to a wire-to-wire win in Honolulu at the PGA’s Sony Open. He ended his amazing week 26 under par, winning the tourney by seven shots over Justin Rose to win first full-field event on the PGA Tour.

Thomas carded rounds of 59, 64, 65 and 65. He set the PGA Tour record with lowest 72-hole score in PGA Tour history. He finished at 253. Tommy Armour III shot 254 at the 2003 Texas Open.

AUSTRALIAN OPEN

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Venus Williams overcame 48 unforced errors to beat Kateryna Kozlova for the second consecutive time in the opening round of a major. The 13th-seeded Williams needed three sets to beat Kozlova at last year’s U.S. Open — and she didn’t have a much easier time on Monday at Melbourne Park.

The seven-time major winner rallied twice from a break down in the opening set before prevailing 7-6, 7-5 in just under two hours.

Olympic gold medalist Monica Puig (PWEEG) didn’t waste any time on the opening day of the Australian Open.

The Puerto Rican player, seeded 29th, was the first player to win a match at Melbourne Park this year, defeating Romania’s Patricia Maria Tig 6-love, 6-1 in 53 minutes.

Simona Halep is the first seeded women’s player to lose at the Australian Open — in the first match on Rod Laver Arena.

American Shelby Rogers defeated the Romanian player 6-3, 6-1

In world and national news…

NEW YORK (AP) — No one, from the CIA director to Democratic lawmakers planning to boycott the inauguration, is being spared the wrath of President-elect Donald Trump, either via Twitter or his top aides. Incoming White House chief of staff Reince Priebus calls the boycott “irresponsible.” Trump responded to criticism from the CIA director in a tweet suggesting John Brennan is a “leaker of fake news.”

BEIJING (AP) — Prickliness continues between President-elect Donald Trump and China over Trump’s suggestion that U.S. policy toward Taiwan could be a bargaining chip with Beijing. China’s Foreign Ministry today flatly rejected any bargaining on the one-China policy in place since 1979, under which the U.S. maintains only unofficial contact with the island. China considers Taiwan part of its territory.

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan (AP) — Officials say 37 people, including people on the ground, died today when a Turkish cargo plane slammed into a neighborhood as it approached the main airport in Kyrgyzstan (KEER’-gih-stan). The Emergency Situations Ministry says remains have been recovered and that 15 people are hospitalized, including six children. Officials say around half the houses in the village outside the airport were destroyed.

DAVOS, Switzerland (AP) — The heads of major U.N. organizations say the world “must not stand silent” to the plight of people in Syria who are cut off from humanitarian aid and lack “the most basic elements to sustain their lives.” The joint appeal today calls for access to civilians cut off from humanitarian aid in Syria. According to the statement, up to 700,000 people — nearly half of them children — live in 15 besieged areas of Syria.

IRBIL, Iraq (AP) — The Iraqi push to retake the country’s second largest city from Islamic State militants is beginning to pile up civilian casualties. In the first week of January, the United Nations said 683 people were injured in Mosul and at least 817 were wounded during the last week of December. Doctors at an emergency hospital say they are above capacity and are now running out of supplies.
