BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota lawmakers say the state needs more time to craft rules to oversee the state’s voter-approved medical marijuana law.

A joint House and Senate meeting was held Monday to consider a proposal to delay the law until the end of July. The measure is supported by both Republican and Democratic leaders.

Republican Senate Majority Leader Rich Wardner says the intent is to ensure the law is regulated correctly. He says it isn’t a move by lawmakers to keep the law from going into effect.

The so-called North Dakota Compassionate Care Act won 65 percent voter approval in November. It allows the use of marijuana as medicine for people who suffer from one of several debilitating illnesses.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota farmers planted 65,000 acres of winter wheat last fall, down from 130,000 acres the previous year.

Winter wheat is planted in the fall and harvested the following summer. It’s not a major crop in North Dakota, and acres fluctuate from year to year.

The Agriculture Department says planted winter wheat acres nationwide totaled 32.4 million, down 10 percent from the previous year.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s fourth-largest city is looking to tighten its belt.

Minot has experienced a 30 percent drop in state aid and a 20 percent decline in city sales tax collections.

City Manager Tom Barry says officials have identified $13 million in infrastructure improvements that could be delayed, including design of a new fire station.

The City Council also might re-examine the sales tax structure to possibly provide more money for flood protection work. The tax is estimated to bring in about $4.5 million for that this year. Barry says that might not be enough in coming years.

Another issue the city needs to deal with is debt. The city’s debt has increased about 165 percent in the past four years, due mainly to growth.

In world and national news…

NEW YORK (AP) — The son of Martin Luther King Jr. says he had a “very constructive” meeting with President-elect Donald Trump on the holiday honoring King’s life. Martin Luther King III played down Trump’s recent claim that Congressman John Lewis, a civil rights icon, was “all talk.” He told reporters at Trump Tower that in the heat of emotion, “a lot of things get said on both sides.” King says the focus of his meeting with Trump was to improve voter participation and stress the need to bring America together. He says Trump assured him it’s his intent to reach out to all Americans, even those who did not support him.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump is promising that his plan to replace the nation’s health care law will have universal coverage. He told the Washington Post, “We’re going to have insurance for everybody.” Trump said, “There was a philosophy in some circles that if you can’t pay for it, you don’t get it. That’s not going to happen with us.”

(AP) Former astronaut Gene Cernan, the last man to walk on the moon, has died at age 82.

NASA announced that Cernan died Monday surrounded by his family. NASA spokesman Bob Jacobs confirmed the death but had no immediately details.

Cernan and Apollo 17 crewmate Harrison Schmitt spent three days on the moon in December 1972. As he followed Schmitt into the lunar lander for the return home, he offered a message of “peace and hope for all mankind.”

He also traced the initials of his 9-year-old daughter into the dust of the lunar surface.

Cernan also took part in a Gemini spaceflight in 1965 and in Apollo 10, the last mission before the one that put Neil Armstrong on the moon in July 1969.

NEW YORK (AP) — Conservative media commentator Monica Crowley will not be joining the Trump administration following accusations of plagiarism. That’s according to a transition official. Crowley had been slated to join Trump’s National Security Council as a director of strategic communications. Her decision to withdraw comes after CNN reported that several passages in a 2012 book written by Crowley were plagiarized. Publisher HarperCollins then pulled the book.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Attorney General Loretta Lynch says authorities have been determined to find out all they could about last June’s Orlando nightclub shooting — including whether anyone knew ahead of time what the gunman was going to do. Her comments on MSNBC follow Monday’s arrest in California of Noor Salman, the widow of nightclub shooter Omar Mateen. The charges include obstruction of justice. The shooting left 49 people dead.

WASHINGTON (AP) — It’s the last time President Barack Obama gets to welcome a championship sports team to the White House. The World Series champion Chicago Cubs visited the East Room today to be recognized for their achievement. Chicago is the president’s hometown, but he’s a White Sox fan. Still, he rooted for the Cubs after the Sox failed to reach the playoffs.
