Friday through Sunday  drizzle/freezing drizzle…fog and light snow/flurries.

Snow accumulations, of likely an inch or less most areas through the entire weekend.

The Turtle Mountains into the James River Valley could see a little

higher amounts through the period, but this will also depend upon

when temperatures  support snow.

2-3 inches of snow through the entire period of Friday night through

Sunday.

The potential for any significant ice accumulation looks to be farther east into eastern ND or more likely into northern Minnesota.

Valley City  (CSi)  Valley City will fill the unexpired term of Richard Ross, who recently resigned his seat.

Ross’ resignation was officially accepted by the Valley City Commission at the January 17, 2017 Regular Meeting.

At that meeting City Attorney, Russell Myhre said within 15 days of Ross’ resignation, petitions to the city commission to hold a Special Election must be received.

An alternative is the City Commission appoint a commissioner, or call for a Special Election on its own.

Meanwhile Valley City residents may see a petition circulating, asking if electing a police chief should be put on an election ballot as an initiated measure. Three Valley City residents have formed a committee to initiate paperwork which has been filed to circulate a petition.

Brian Mindt of  Valley City is reported to saying that he and other residents believe electing a police chief, who is now appointed  is a good idea.

The three members of the sponsoring committee consist of  Mindt, Larry Hetland and Anthony Drake.

At the January 17, 2017, theValley City Commission  unanimously approved Acting Police Chief, Lt. Phil Hatcher becoming the permanent Chief of Police. Which followed the retirement of Fred Thompson in December of 2016.

Update…

ROLLA, N.D. (AP) — Authorities say a sheriff’s deputy and a suspect are dead after a shootout in northern North Dakota that involved several officers firing weapons.

Rolette County Sheriff Gerald Medrud says 29-year-old Colt Allery had been with the department for three months after previously working for other area law agencies.

The incident began about 6:10 p.m. Wednesday when officers responded to a stolen vehicle call. Deputies pursued the vehicle for about 15 miles before a shootout began at a remote intersection south of Belcourt, a town near the Canadian border that’s about 60 miles from Devils Lake.

The suspect, who has not been identified, also was killed. Medrud says three other deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on standard administrative leave. North Dakota’s state crime bureau is investigating the case.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — A person injured in a shooting at a Minot trailer park has been arrested.

Police were called to the Northland Trailer Park Tuesday afternoon following a report of gunshots. Officers sealed off the area and urged Ramstad Middle School to lock down.

The Minot Daily News reports police say a suspect was taken into custody about 4 p.m. and transported to Trinity Hospital with injuries. A release from the city did not say how the suspect was wounded or who inflicted the injuries.

No officers were injured in the confrontation.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Authorities in Las Vegas have identified a 40-year-old man who was stabbed to death during a fight with his brother in a case that police say may be ruled self-defense.

The Clark County coroner said Wednesday that Justin Dale Boyer of St. John, North Dakota, died Monday at a hospital after being injured late Sunday. His death was ruled a homicide.

Police didn’t identify the brother. Officer Danny Cordero says he was questioned but not immediately arrested pending a review of the case by the Clark County district attorney.

Police say a roommate separated the men, but Boyer renewed the attack at a home several miles west of the Las Vegas Strip.

Neighbors summoned police about a bleeding man screaming outside the house, and police say both brothers were hospitalized.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota Supreme Court will allow lawyers from other states to temporarily help with cases stemming from the Dakota Access pipeline protest.

The justices said Wednesday that there’s no evidence that any defendants have been denied counsel because they couldn’t find a lawyer in North Dakota, but recognize the potential for “delay or inconvenience” due to the large number of arrests.

The high court says there have been 553 court cases filed in the state’s South Central Judicial District as of Dec. 19, resulting in assignments to 81 attorneys. A large number of arrests occurred on single days, including one day when 71 lawyers were asked to serve.

Lawyers not licensed in North Dakota are normally required to work on a case with an attorney who is approved by the state.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Multimillionaire North Dakota Republican Gov. Doug Burgum wants to pay for additions such as heated garage floor to a new $5 million governor’s mansion but GOP leaders say no.

House Majority Leader Al Carlson and his Republican Senate counterpart, Rich Wardner, say the design already has been approved by a committee and the new governor doesn’t get to change anything just because he’s willing to pay for it.

Burgum spokesman Mike Nowatzki says the governor wants to add such things as a skylight and a heated garage floor to the new mansion that already is under construction. Nowatzki says all of the additions are energy-efficient items that will save taxpayers money.

The Legislature in 2015 approved construction of governor’s the home, stipulating that $1 million of its cost must be funded by private donations.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s new governor is allowing removal proceedings to go forward against Ward County Sheriff Steve Kukowski.

Ward County commissioners voted earlier this month to ask Gov. Doug Burgum to dismiss the removal proceedings, or to lift Kukowski’s suspension.

But the Minot Daily News reports Burgum responded he has no authority under state law to take either action.

Former Gov. Jack Dalrymple initiated removal proceedings after a special prosecutor handling misdemeanor charges against Kukowski petitioned the action last March. Dalrymple suspended Kukowski in June, pending a removal hearing that has been delayed until the criminal case is decided.

Kukowski faces misdemeanor charges related to an October 2014 incident in which an ill jail inmate died after being transported to a law enforcement agency in Bismarck. Kukowski maintains his innocence.

DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) — A city commissioner first elected in 1990 has missed 42 percent of the meetings held by the commission in the past three years.

City Commissioner Rick Morse has missed 51 of the 121 meetings held, including special budget meetings.

Morse says a reason for his absences is due to his duties as a respiratory therapist. He says while he has missed nearly half of the commission’s meetings, he keeps current with his portfolio.

Mayor Richard Johnson says commissioners do not have attendance requirements.

Morse hasn’t said if he plans to run for another term. He will be up for re-election in 2018.

City meetings are held twice a month, on Monday evenings.

TOP-25 COLLEGE BASKETBALL

UNDATED (AP) — Unranked Oklahoma limped into Wednesday’s men’s basketball schedule with a 7-9 record and walked out with its biggest win of the season.

Jordan Woodard hit a layup with 2.2 seconds left in overtime to give the Sooners an 89-87 victory at No. 7 West Virginia.

Jonathan Isaac finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds as 10th-ranked Florida State beat No. 15 Notre Dame, 83-80.

No. 16 Virginia scored 15 straight points in the first half of a 71-54 stifling of Boston College.

Sindarious Thornwell contributed 15 of his 20 points after halftime to send 24th-ranked South Carolina to a 57-53 win against No. 19 Florida.

No. 20 Cincinnati owns a nine-game winning streak after Kyle Washington scored 10 of his 16 points in the second half to rally the Bearcats past Temple, 81-74.

WILD…

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Minnesota Wild defenseman Jonas Brodin will miss at least the next month because of a broken finger.

Brodin was hurt Tuesday in the Wild’s 4-3 loss to New Jersey. After Brodin was examined by a specialist, the Wild announced Wednesday that Brodin will be out for a minimum of four weeks.

The Western Conference-leading Wild had successfully dodged the injury bug for the last several weeks until the setback for Brodin. The 23-year-old has three goals and 13 assists while playing in all 43 games. He’s second on the team with 68 blocked shots and third in ice time per game with an average of 19:46.

Nate Prosser, who has appeared in only one of the past 10 games, will likely take Brodin’s place on the blue line.

ATHLETICS-PLOUFFE

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Infielder Trevor Plouffe has finalized a $5.25 million, one-year contract with the Oakland Athletics and is expected to be the primary third baseman if he can stay healthy.

Plouffe can earn an additional $750,000 in performance bonuses based on plate appearances as part of the agreement announced Wednesday: $150,000 for 350, and $300,000 each for 450 and 525.

He spent three stints on the disabled list last season, when he began as Minnesota’s starting third baseman and hit a career-best .260 with 12 home runs and 47 RBIs in 84 games. He was batting .302 with two home runs and six RBIs over 12 games before his first time on the DL on April 19 with a strain in the right ribcage area. He was sidelined again from July 2 to Aug. 7 because of a broken left rib, then didn’t play again after Sept. 6 because of a strained left hamstring.

The 30-year-old provides versatility as he can also play first, making 13 starts there and 60 at third.

Oakland designated right-hander Zach Neal for assignment.

Elsewhere in the majors:

— Angels right fielder Kole Calhoun has agreed to a three-year, $26 million contract that includes a $14 million option for 2020. Calhoun hit .271 with 18 homers, 75 RBIs and 91 runs last season, one year after winning a Gold Glove.

— The Cleveland Indians have worked out a two-year, $5 million package with outfielder Brandon Guyer, who was acquired from Tampa Bay last Aug. 1. Guyer batted .266 with nine homers and 32 RBIs in 101 games last season, including a .333 average and 14 ribbies in 38 games for the Indians. He has led the majors in getting hit by pitches over the last two seasons.

— The Tigers have acquired outfielder Mikie (MY’-kee) Mahtook from the Rays for a player to be named or cash. The former first-round pick hit .195 with three home runs and 11 RBIs in 65 games for Tampa Bay last season after batting .295 with nine homers in 2015.

NEW YORK (AP) —Don’t bother to invite Jeff Bagwell, Tim Raines or Ivan Rodriguez to a barbecue the last weekend in July unless it’s in Cooperstown.

The Baseball Hall of Fame will open its doors to “Bags,” ”Rock” and “Pudge” on July 30 after they were selected by the Professional Baseball Writers Association of America on the required 75 percent of the ballots. Closer Trevor Hoffman finished just five votes shy of election, while outfielder Vladimir Guerrero fell 15 votes short. Edgar Martinez was sixth in the voting.

Bagwell was named on 86.2 percent of the ballots. The former first baseman spent his 15-year major league career with the Astros, batting .297 with 449 home runs and 1,529 RBIs.

Raines was chosen on 86 percent of the ballots in his final year of eligibility. The one-time Montreal Expos outfielder was a lifetime .294 hitter with 170 home runs, 980 RBIs and 808 stolen bases. He served as one of the game’s best leadoff hitters in the 1980s and 90s.

Rodriguez was a defensive standout behind the plate and hit .296 with 311 homers and 1,332 ribbies in a career spent mostly with the Rangers. Rodriguez was selected on 76 percent of the ballots despite his alleged link to performance-enhancing drugs.

Two other steroids-tainted superstars were snubbed again by the voters. Roger Clemens was named on 54.1 percent of the ballots, while Barry Bonds made it on 53.8 percent.

TENNIS-AUSTRALIAN OPEN

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Novak Djokovic (NOH’-vak JOH’-kuh-vich) won’t be setting the Australian Open record for most men’s titles this year, after a shocking second-round loss to wild-card entry Denis Istomin.

It was the earliest loss at a major since 2008 for six-time Australian Open champion Djokovic, who had never dropped a set to Istomin in six previous meetings.

He lost the 85-minute first set in a tiebreaker, seemed to get the momentum back only for No. 117-ranked Istomin to finish stronger for a 7-6 (8), 5-7, 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 win.

Istomin next plays No. 30 Pablo Carreno Busta.

Third-seeded Milos Raonic (MEE’-lohsh ROW’-nihch) shrugged off a cold and a sore throat to extend his streak of reaching the third round at all seven Australian Opens he’s contested with a 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (4) win over Gilles Muller, the Sydney International champion last week. He next faces No. 25 Gilles Simon.

On the women’s side, Serena Williams, who is also ranked No. 2 and is a six-time Australian Open champion, kept her chase for an Open-era record 23rd major title on track with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Lucie Safarova in a night session delayed by Djokovic’s defeat.

No. 3-ranked Agnieszka Radwanska (ahg-nee-ESH’-kuh rahd-VAHN’-skuh) didn’t last much longer than Djokovic, losing her second-round match 6-3, 6-2 to Mirjana Lucic-Baroni (meer-YAH’-nah LOO’-chich bah-ROH’-nee). Radwanska reached the semifinals here last year; Lucic-Baroni hadn’t won an Australian Open match since 1998 until her first-round win this week.

The 41st president is in intensive care at Houston Methodist Hospital for pneumonia and the former first lady was admitted to the hospital Wednesday after experiencing fatigue and coughing.

Former President Bill Clinton wrote on Twitter: “41 and Barbara — thinking about you both and sending wishes for a speedy recovery. Love, 42.”

Both President-elect Donald Trump and President Barack Obama sent their well wishes to the Bushes as well. Trump said on Twitter that he is looking forward to the couple’s quick recovery, while Obama said at a press conference Wednesday that the Bushes “are as fine a couple as we know.”

MILAN (AP) — Criticism is pouring in about the response time of Italian emergency crews following an avalanche that buried a hotel in the central Abruzzo region. At least 30 people are missing. A restaurant owner says he immediately phoned authorities after getting a call from one of his chefs who was on vacation at the hotel, but that rescuers didn’t show up for over two hours.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Emergency responders are digging through the rubble of a high-rise building in Tehran that collapsed after being engulfed by fire. Iranian state media report at least 30 firefighters were killed, while some 75 other people were injured. The disaster struck the Plasco building located in central Tehran just north of the capital’s sprawling bazaar.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Iran’s foreign minister says it’s in everyone’s interest to stick to a nuclear agreement reached between his country and six world powers. The official says Iran has options if President-elect Donald Trump ditches the deal, adding “we will make him surprised.” The foreign minister declined to elaborate.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump is returning to Washington today on the eve of his inauguration. He made a whirlwind trip to the nation’s capital last night to visit his Pennsylvania Avenue hotel for a late dinner before heading back to New York. This time, Trump will be staying at Blair House, the presidential guest quarters.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama will be spending his last full day in office. The White House has left Obama’s schedule for today mostly empty, saying he would use the time to pack. Obama is expected to grant one final round of clemency, following hundreds of commutations and pardons he issued earlier in the week.
