FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A man authorities say fatally stabbed another man and injured his nephew on the Spirit Lake Reservation last spring has been sentenced to life in prison.

Thirty-six-year-old Dallas Thundershield was accused of killing Richard Demarce Sr. and injuring Elvis Demarce in an April 2016 fight that began while the three were driving around with Thundershield’s girlfriend.

A jury in October convicted Thundershield of second-degree murder and three assault-related charges, including assault of his girlfriend at a Hamar residence.

He was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Fargo on Tuesday. Judge Ralph Erickson also ordered him to pay $150,000 in restitution.

CANNON BALL, N.D. (AP) — Most of the demonstrators who gathered on the North Dakota plains to oppose the Dakota Access oil pipeline declared victory and departed their snowy protest camp last month.

That was after the Army announced it would halt the project.

Now that President Donald Trump’s administration is pushing to complete the pipeline, the few hundred protesters still living on the wind-whipped prairie must decide what to do — accept the likely defeat and leave, or stay and continue to fight.

Some vow to remain, but Trump’s action seems unlikely to spark a major rejuvenation of the depleted camp of people who dubbed themselves “water protectors.”

Trump on Tuesday ordered the Army Corps of Engineers to reconsider its Dec. 4 decision to stop the construction to allow time for more environmental study.

?

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — President Donald Trump’s executive actions on the Dakota Access and Keystone XL pipelines are aimed at turning the disputed projects into reality, but it’s not clear how quickly that might happen.

Dakota Access is to carry North Dakota oil to Illinois. It’s nearly complete but stalled while the developer and the Army battle in court over permission for the pipeline to cross under the Missouri River in North Dakota.

The Keystone XL project was to bring oil from Canada to Nebraska. Former President Barack Obama halted it in late 2015 for environmental reasons.

Trump’s actions don’t immediately clear the way for construction, and opponents of the projects are likely to fight in court.

Both projects also have been the focus of intense protests, and Trump’s actions might reinvigorate those efforts.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota congressman is asking the Trump administration to provide federal protection if or when construction resumes on the Dakota Access pipeline.

President Donald Trump has ordered the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to quickly review and approve construction and easement requests for the $3.8 billion pipeline, a project that has led to major protests. That doesn’t immediately clear the way for construction to resume, but it does order the Corps to quickly consider whether to approve the Lake Oahe crossing, a move opposed by the Standing Rock Sioux tribe which gets its drinking water from the lake.

Republican Rep. Kevin Cramer has asked Trump to pay for law enforcement costs at the pipeline protest site near Cannon Ball and provide federal police to protect construction workers.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — A former North Dakota school superintendent serving up to 40 years in prison for sex crimes involving minors wants electronics returned that were seized during the investigation.

Former Sawyer superintendent Charles Soper argued in court Tuesday that the state should return a computer, an iPad and a cellphone to his family, so they can sell or use the devices.

Ward County Deputy State’s Attorney Kelly Dillon argued the computer and iPad both contain child pornography and should be destroyed. The Minot Police Department wants to keep Soper’s cellphone to use as a training tool.

The judge took the request under advisement.

Soper was accused of sexually abusing three teenage boys and possessing child pornography. He resigned from the school after his arrest in 2015.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — With 455 cases of influenza statewide, some North Dakota hospitals are restricting visitors.

Nearly 18 percent of the flu cases are in the Bismarck-Mandan area.

Due to the high volume of flu cases Sanford Medical Center and CHI St. Alexius in Bismarck began restricting its visitors on Tuesday.

Bismarck-Burleigh Health Director Renae Moch is urging local residents to disinfect surfaces they frequently touch at home, work and school. He advises to get a flu shot, wash hands with soap and water frequently and stay home when sick.

According to Moch, a possible reason for the spread of the virus in the area could be that influenza survives better in cold and drier climates.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s governor has signed his first bill into law.

Gov. Doug Burgum signed a Senate bill Wednesday that allows the state to borrow $8 million from the Bank of North Dakota to pay for law enforcement costs related to the Dakota Access pipeline protests.

The fast-tracked bill also includes $3 million in borrowing authority from the Bank of North Dakota to provide grant money for costs related to the protest activities, most of which have happened in Morton County.

Rep. Jeff Delzer noted the state’s Emergency Commission has already authorized $17 million in borrowing authority.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Dexter Werner scored all of his 19 points in the second half, Khy Kabellis added nine of his 12 after the break and North Dakota State overcame a 13-point, second-half deficit for an 81-71 win over Oral Roberts on Wednesday night.

Carlin Dupree finished with 14 points and Tyson Ward scored 12 with eight rebounds for North Dakota State (15-6, 7-1 Summit League), which has won three in a row.

Oral Roberts (7-15, 3-5) scored seven straight points to make it 50-37 with 15 minutes left, but Werner — who picked up two quick fouls and played just two minutes in the first half, took over.

He had nine points during a 12-4 run that pulled the Bison within four midway through the half, and then scored 10 amid a 21-8 spurt as NDSU took a 75-68 lead with 1:21 left.

Kris Martin answered with a 3-pointer, but the Golden Eagles missed their last five shots and North Dakota State made 6 of 6 free throws in the final 36 seconds.

Albert Owens tied a career high with 28 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Oral Roberts.

NDSU hit 10 3-pointers, committed a season-low tying seven turnovers and made 21 of 24 foul shots.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Marc Loving and Trevor Thompson each scored 19 points to lift Ohio State over Minnesota 78-72 on Wednesday night.

Thompson’s total was a career high, and he also led the Buckeyes with 10 rebounds. Loving bounced back from a disappointing performance Sunday, and Ohio State dealt the Gophers their fourth straight loss.

OLYMPICS-BOLT-MEDAL STRIPPED

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — Usain (yoo-SAYN’) Bolt has lost one of his nine Olympic gold medals in a doping case involving teammate Nesta Carter.

The IOC says Carter tested positive for a banned stimulant in re-analysis of samples from the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Carter and Bolt were teammates on the winning 4×100-meter relay team, which also included Michael Frater and Asafa (ah-SAH’-fah) Powell.

The relay title in Beijing completed the first of Bolt’s three gold medal sweeps in the 100, 200 and relay at three straight Olympics.

TENNIS-AUSTRALIAN OPEN

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Roger Federer has rallied to reach the final of the Australian Open, beating Stan Wawrinka (vah-VRINK’-ah) 7-5, 6-3, 1-6, 4-6, 6-3 in just over three hours.

The sold-out crowd in Rod Laver Arena roared when Wawrinka double-faulted to give Federer the critical service break at 4-2 in the fifth set.

The 35-year-old Federer calmly served it out two games later to become the oldest player to reach a Grand Slam final since Ken Rosewall made the 1974 U.S. Open final at the age of 39.

It will be an all-Williams women’s final at the Australian Open.

Second seed Serena Williams cruised into the final with a 6-2, 6-1 dismantling of Mirjana Lucic-Baroni (loo-CHEECH’ bah-ROH’-nee). Williams broke serve five times and wrapped up the match in just 50 minutes.

The six-time Australian Open champion is in line for her 23rd Grand Slam title, a record in the Open era.

Venus Williams also advanced at Melbourne, 14 years after losing to Serena in her last Australian Open final. The 36-year-old Williams dropped a first-set tiebreaker before completing a 6-7, 6-2, 6-3 win over fellow American Coco Vandeweghe (VAN’-deh-way). Williams broke serve twice in taking a 4-1 lead in the second set, rallying after Vandeweghe took the tiebreak, 7-3.

Venus is in a Grand Slam final for the first time since 2009.

NASCAR-EDWARDS-SENATE

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Politics may be in Carl Edwards’ future now that his NASCAR driving days are over.

Edwards told The Associated Press that he would consider a challenge to Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill next year, although he added that he has no plans at the moment to enter the race. His comments come two weeks after he ended his racing career.

Columbia College political science professor Terry Smith speculated in a piece for KBIA’s Talking Politics that Edwards will challenge the Democratic two-term senator next year.

SPORTS MEDIA-MUSBURGER

NEW YORK (AP) — Brent Musburger is ending his sportscasting career at ESPN to get in the sports handicapping business.

The 77-year old will bow out after calling the Jan. 31 basketball game between Kentucky and Georgia.

Musburger came to prominence as part of CBS’s NFL Today program in the 1980’s before he was let go by the network in what was considered a salary dump.

Pena Nieto condemned the U.S. decision in a televised address.
