Herbert Handt, age 92, of Lisbon, ND, formerly of Valley City, ND, died Tuesday, January 31st at Sanford Health, Fargo, ND.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 4th at the Lerud Schuldt Mathias Funeral Home chapel in Valley City.

Visitation will be held one hour before the service at the chapel on Saturday morning.

Interment will be held at 3:00 PM Monday, February 6th at the North Dakota Veteran’s Cemetery near Mandan, ND.

Herbert August Handt, the son of Erick and Frieda (Vitt) Handt, was born January 20, 1925 in St. Paul, MN.

Herbert grew up and attended school in the St. Paul area.

On September 29, 1943 Herbert was inducted in the US Army and served his country during World War II.

During his service, he was stationed in New Guinea, the southern Philippines and Luzon.

Herbert earned the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Victory Medal and the Philippine Liberation Medal with 3 Bronze Stars.

He was Honorably Discharged from Active Duty on October 20, 1943 with the rank of Sargent.

Herbert married Irene Winson in 1950.

Herbert spend most of his life in Valley City, ND where he was an avid mechanic who loved to fish.

Herbert married Shirley Estes in 1970.

Later in life Herbert took up knitting and quilt tying, his biggest passion was making churches and wind chimes out of wood.

Herbert is survived by his daughter, Sharon (Jim) Jensen, Valley City, ND; four sons, David Handt, Marion, ND, Douglas Handt, Carrington, ND, Deano (Tracy) Handt, Minnewaukan, MN and Darcie (Beth) Handt, Bismarck, ND; one sister Brigetta Duffy, Valley City, ND; Grandchildren; Great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
