TURTLE LAKE, N.D. (AP) — Authorities say a man is dead after a house fire in western North Dakota.

The McLean County Law Enforcement Center got a 911 call early Tuesday about the fire in rural Turtle Lake. A 50-year-old woman reported she was able to escape unharmed but a man was still inside the house.

Several fire departments responded. Firefighters recovered the remains of 41-year-old Jason Sweet from the basement.

The fire destroyed the house. The state fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause.

Update…

TwoHeartsThe suspect is identified as 23-year-old Daniel Michael TwoHearts. TwoHearts fired three shots from a 9 mm handgun. Three passengers were in the Chevrolet pickup; two were arrested. Methamphetamine was located inside the vehicle. Area residents were notified as the ground search was conducted.

Between the hours of 11:30 p.m. and 6:30 a.m., TwoHearts stole an additional vehicle, a silver 2005 Ford Taurus bearing North Dakota plates 679AOF.

TwoHearts is at large and considered armed and dangerous. TwoHearts photo is attached. His hair is longer now than at the time of the photo.

Citizens are asked to call 911 if they see anything or anyone suspicious. Do not approach the suspect.

Previously…

(CSi)  The North Dakota Highway Patrol reports that  shortly after 9:30 p.m. Thursday, a NDHP trooper attempted a traffic stop on a red Chevrolet pickup with excessively loud exhaust on I-29 at Grand Forks.  The vehicle fled southbound on I-29 at approximately 100 mph.  Just south of Exit 104 (Hillsboro), law enforcement successfully deployed tire spikes and flattened the tires of the fleeing vehicle.  Upon stopping, the driver of the suspect vehicle exited and fired shots at the NDHP trooper.  The trooper avoided being struck.  No shots were fired by law enforcement.  The suspect fled on foot.   Two passengers in the vehicle were taken into custody without further incident.

While law enforcement was still searching for the suspect on foot at approximately 11:04 p.m., a report was received of a vehicle stolen from Hillsboro with a baby in it.  Law enforcement located the stolen vehicle northbound on County Road 81 and successfully deployed tire spikes, flattening its tires east of Reynolds.  The driver fled on foot.   The baby was located in the vehicle by officers, uninjured, and brought to safety.

Numerous law enforcement agencies continue to actively search for this suspect east of Reynolds, believed to be armed and dangerous.  Citizens are asked to call 911 if they see anything or anyone suspicious in this area.  Citizens are advised not to approach the suspect.  Law enforcement aircraft are being utilized in the search.  Northbound traffic on I-29 was shut down for approximately one hour and was re-opened at approximately 11:30 p.m.

More information when the report is completed as the investigation continues.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A former deputy U.S. marshal has been convicted of spying on Bismarck women as they undressed in store dressing rooms.

Michael Rivera was found guilty of misdemeanors including surreptitious intrusion and creating and attempting to create sexually expressive images, but found not guilty of more serious felony charges. The 29-year-old was cleared of 11 charges related to minors in the case.

Parents of the victims say that while they are disappointed with the verdict, the jury did the best it could with the laws that are in place.

Assistant State’s Attorney Julie Lawyer says the jury seemed to struggle with the definition of sexual conduct. She says the case could possibly lead to changes to the law in the future.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Police are warning that more counterfeit money is popping up in the Fargo area.

The fake currency is known as movie money. The counterfeit $50 bills don’t feel real and are marked “FOR MOTION PICTURE USE ONLY.”

The bills, called “prop money,” are available for purchase online and cost about $1 per fake bill. Some of the bills have a thick blue line across the bill to mark it as fake.

Last month a 22-year old Fargo man was arrested for allegedly passing $100 bills that were also prop money.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — An American Indian lawmaker is pushing a bill that would require his colleagues in North Dakota’s nearly all-white Legislature to complete four-hours of “cultural competency training” to improve their relationship with Native Americans.

Sen. Richard Marcellais (MAR’-suh-lay) has pushed the idea unsuccessfully before, but says the dispute over the Dakota Access pipeline makes it more appropriate than ever. The Standing Rock Sioux tribe is fighting the pipeline.

Leaders of the Republican-controlled Legislature say the training legislation is unnecessary.

House Majority Leader Al Carlson called the legislation “another solution in search of a problem.”

Several Native Americans spoke passionately in favor of the legislation Thursday in a Senate hearing.

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (AP) — Two of Bobby Vee’s four children have filed a court petition claiming their siblings are misusing money from the late pop singer’s estate.

Robby Velline and Jennifer Whittet Velline claim in the Stearns County District Court petition that their brothers, Tommy and Jeff Velline, have used money from the estate for their personal benefit and to support Rockhouse Productions. Rockhouse is a recording studio and production facility that is run by the brothers. It was established by Bobby and his wife, Karen, who is also deceased.

Tommy and Jeff Velline have filed a counter petition that says their actions had the approval of their parents.

Bobby Vee’s star rose in the 1960s. He died in October of advanced Alzheimer’s disease.

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — Wildlife advocates say they’ll fight the government’s request to lift a 2015 injunction barring construction of an irrigation dam on the Yellowstone River in a legal dispute over the fate of a fast-disappearing, endangered fish.

Federal agencies want to begin construction on the dam and an artificial fish bypass channel in July.

Government attorneys argued in court documents filed Wednesday night that the bypass is the pallid sturgeon’s best hope and would allow the fish to reach upstream spawning grounds.

Biologists have doubts the bypass would work.

Jonathan Proctor with Defenders of Wildlife said Thursday that the best solution is to remove an existing rock weir at the proposed dam site and install pumps to provide river water to croplands in Montana and North Dakota.

The case is before U.S. District Judge Brian Morris.

WILD…

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Wild have called up forward Alex Tuch from the AHL, putting their 2014 first-round draft pick in position to make his NHL debut.

The Wild made the move on Thursday, their off day. They play at Vancouver on Saturday.

Tuch was the 18th overall selection in 2014 before he played two seasons at Boston College while tallying 32 goals and 30 assists in 77 games. In his first professional season for the Iowa Wild, the 20-year-old Tuch has 11 goals and 11 assists in 34 games. The 6-foot-4, 217-pound native of Syracuse, New York, who is one of several promising prospects in the Wild’s system, played in the AHL All-Star Game on Monday.

The Minnesota Wild have signed goalie Alex Stalock to a two-year contract extension, allowing the club to protect All-Star Devan Dubnyk in the upcoming expansion draft.

BOYS’ HOCKEY-SUSPENDED

THIEF RIVER FALLS, Minn. (AP) — The Thief River Falls school district has suspended all members of the boys’ varsity and junior varsity hockey teams after an external investigation uncovered misconduct by some of the players.

The school’s superintendent, Bradley Bergstrom, says the weeklong suspension began Monday and the players have forfeited one junior varsity game and two varsity games against Crookston and St. Cloud Cathedral.

A law firm hired by the district has met with each player, allowing parents to be there and students to share their side of the story. Bergstrom says “based on the outcome” of the investigation the entire team has been suspended and will be required to participate in an “educational component.”

Bergstrom declined to comment on the nature of the allegations against players, but says hazing was not the issue.

NBA-BUCKS-HORNETS TRADE…

MILWAUKEE (AP) — The Charlotte Hornets have altered their roster amid a six-game losing streak that has dropped them under .500

The Hornets have picked up center Miles Plumlee from the Bucks for forward/center Spencer Hawes and center Roy Hibbert. Plumlee has averaged 2.6 points and 1.7 in 32 games this season, including 12 starts. Hawes has averaged 7.3 points and 4.2 rebounds in 35 games, while Hibbert has averaged 5.2 points and 3.6 rebounds.

Charlotte sat atop the Southeast Division at 20-16 on Jan. 4 before their current 3-11 skid dropped them to 23-27, six games behind the first-place Washington Wizards. The Bucks are 21-27 and one game behind the Hornets for the final Eastern Conference playoff berth.

PGA-PHOENIX OPEN

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Matt Kuchar (KOO’-chur) is the leader through one round of the PGA’S Phoenix Open.

Kuchar eagled the par-5 13th and had five birdies in a 7-under 64. He followed his 20-foot eagle putt with birdies on three of his final four holes to complete a bogey-free round.

Kuchar is one stroke ahead of defending champ Hideki Matsuyama (hih-DEH’-kee maht-soo-YAH’-mah) and Brendan Steele.

Jordan Spieth (speeth) shot a 70 to trail by five shots.

GOLF-DUBAI DESERT CLASSIC-WOODS

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The European Tour says Tiger Woods has withdrawn from the Dubai Desert Classic due to a back injury.

Woods insisted he had not suffered a setback despite his comeback continuing in demoralising fashion, the 14-time major winner failing to card a single birdie as he slumped to an opening 77, two shots worse than his previous highest score in the event.

He did not look 100 per cent fit at various points in his round, climbing gingerly out of a greenside bunker on his first hole and notably grimacing as he walked off the tee on the seventh, his 16th.

“No, I wasn’t in pain at all,” Woods said after the first round at Emirates Golf Club. “I was just trying to hit shots and I wasn’t doing a very good job. At the end I finally hit some good ones but the damage had already been done.”

Woods returned to the PGA Tour for the first time in 17 months last week and failed to make the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open.

In world and national news…

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran took the first swing today, banning U.S. wrestlers from participating in the Freestyle World Cup competition this month in response to President Donald Trump’s executive order forbidding visas for Iranians. And the official IRNA news agency reports a senior Iranian cleric vowed that Tehran will continue its missile program. U.S. officials say sanctions could be levied today over the missile test.

PARIS (AP) — A French Socialist lawmaker says “the worst is yet to come” after a knife-wielding man attacked a patrol of French soldiers near the Louvre Museum. The man was shot and gravely wounded. Sebastien Pietrasanta, who wrote a report on the fight against terror, says France faces threats from the outside as well as lone wolves from within. Things are returning to normal around the Louvre.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is taking his first steps aimed at scaling back financial services regulations. He’ll sign an executive order today that will direct the Treasury secretary to review the 2010 Dodd-Frank financial oversight law, which reshaped financial regulation after the 2008-09 financial crisis. Trump pledged during the campaign to repeal and replace the law.

NEW YORK (AP) — There’s been a change of plans for a notorious Mexican drug kingpin in custody in the United States. Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman is scheduled to appear in person in a federal court in New York today, as opposed to the video feed originally planned. The original order was changed after his lawyers asked the judge to reconsider. Guzman is charged with running a massive drug trafficking operation.

TOKYO (AP) — Despite doubts raised by President Donald Trump, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis is trying to provide strong reassurance to Japan and South Korea that the U.S. has their backs. Mattis gave the reassurance in Japan after a stop in South Korea where he explicitly warned North Korea against using a nuclear weapon, saying such an act would be met with a response that is “effective and overwhelming.”
