BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — American Indian activist Chase Iron Eyes says he’s not deterred by a judge’s ruling that the developer of the Dakota Access pipeline can continue drilling under a Missouri River reservoir in North Dakota.
Iron Eyes is helping lead opposition to the pipeline, which would move North Dakota oil to Illinois. He says opponents will continue fighting the project in the courts and pushing for more environmental study of the Lake Oahe crossing.
Federal Judge James Boasberg on Monday refused to halt construction while legal challenges by the Cheyenne River and Standing Rock Sioux are resolved. But he said he’ll more fully consider the request at a Feb. 27 hearing.
Iron Eyes says opponents will maintain an on-the-ground presence in the drilling area, “peacefully and prayerfully.”
There have been more than 700 arrests in the area since August.
Earlier Monday….
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The Army Corps of Engineers is objecting to a request by the Cheyenne River and Standing Rock Sioux tribes to stop construction of the final big stretch of the Dakota Access pipeline.
The Corps last Wednesday gave developer Energy Transfer Partners permission to lay pipe under a Missouri River reservoir in North Dakota. That’s the last big section needed before the pipeline could carry North Dakota oil to Illinois.
The tribes have asked a federal judge to block the work until their legal challenges of the pipeline are resolved. They maintain the project threatens cultural sites, water and their religion.
The Corps says in court documents that the tribes will have plenty of time to make their case before oil flows through the pipeline, and a work stoppage isn’t warranted.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) — A grassroots group in Minot is working to determine whether the Democratic-NPL Party can be revitalized in the city, or if it’s time for a third party.
Republicans have dominated North Dakota politics in recent years, and all 12 Minot-area members of the state Legislature are Republican.
Organizer Nicholas Trumbauer says the group formed a couple of weeks ago, after a message went out over Facebook about a meeting that about 30 people attended.
Trumbauer says the group must make decisions about whether people want to be active on the district level or through an umbrella group encompassing Minot’s four districts.
Trumbauer says progressive-minded people are invited to bring ideas to the group’s next meeting Wednesday.

In world and national news…
WASHINGTON (AP) — They’re emphasizing the goals they share — but the differences between the leaders of the U.S. and Canada have also been on display after their meeting Monday at the White House. At a joint news conference, President Donald Trump defended his refugee and immigration orders, saying that “we cannot let the wrong people in.” Canada’s Justin Trudeau, meanwhile, said Canada continues to pursue policies of “openness.”
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is vowing to deal with North Korea “very strongly” after the country’s latest missile test. The weekend test has been seen as an implicit challenge to Trump, who has vowed to take a tough line on North Korea. Trump said at his joint press conference with Canada’s prime minister that North Korea “is a big, big problem and we will deal with that very strongly.” Trump has yet to release a strategy for dealing with North Korea’s nuclear ambitions.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Mitt Romney is urging the Senate to confirm fast-food executive Andrew Puzder as President Donald Trump’s labor secretary. The 2012 GOP presidential nominee said on social media that Puzder “knows how hard Americans work, and how much that work means to them and their families.” Puzder’s long-delayed confirmation hearing is set for Thursday. Sen. Elizabeth Warren is leading the argument against Puzder, saying he would side with businesses over workers from atop the agency charged with enforcing workplace protections. She also said he would have potential conflicts of interest.
BELLEFONTE, Pa. (AP) — One of Jerry Sandusky’s adult sons is facing multiple charges of sexual offenses involving children. This, more than five years after the former Penn State assistant coach was himself first arrested. Court records filed today say 41-year-old Jeffrey Sandusky was charged with 14 counts, including criminal solicitation and corruption of minors. A TV station (WTAJ) says state police accuse him of sending inappropriate texts to a victim and asking for naked photos. Jerry Sandusky is serving a lengthy prison sentence for sexual abuse of 10 boys.
PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Utilities in Maine say despite whiteout conditions caused by blustery snow, the storm hasn’t brought as many power outages as expected. The snow in Maine is light, not sticky, and the wind isn’t moving as fast as predicted. Although driving conditions are poor, the snow isn’t creating much havoc with electrical systems.
