This second annual event establishes “Mercy Box” locations where people can donate new travel sized personal care items, small pre-packaged non-perishable snacks, socks, and small first aid supplies.

CROSBY, N.D. (AP) — A long standoff between law enforcement and a man accused of firing shots inside his house ended peacefully in Crosby.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Students at North Dakota State University are writing memorials to two classmates killed in a weekend car accident near Moorhead.

The Biological Sciences Department has provided journals in Stevens Hall so students can express their grief, share memories and offer condolences over the loss of Danie Thomssen and Carson Roney.

The  journals will then be given to the families of Thomssen and Roney.

The two students died late Saturday night in a one-car accident on Interstate 94. Services for Thomssen will be held Friday in Bismarck. Roney’s funeral will take place Saturday in Oakes.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Legislation aimed squarely at protesters who blocked roads in North Dakota during the Dakota Access pipeline demonstrations has failed in the state House.

The bill said a driver who “unintentionally” caused an injury or death to a person blocking a road would not be charged.

The legislation’s primary sponsor, Republican Rep. Keith Kempenich, told The Washington Post recently the idea came from an interaction his mother-in-law had with protesters. Kempenich says she found herself swarmed by protesters who jumped in front of her car while driving on Highway 1806. The bill failed on a 50-41 vote Monday.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says construction activities will begin this week on the first phase of the $2.1 billion Red River flood diversion project in the Fargo-Moorhead area.

The Corps said Tuesday that Ames Construction of Burnsville, Minnesota, is sending equipment to the site near Horace, North Dakota, to conduct pre-construction studies for the diversion inlet. The inlet will include a control structure with three gates to regulate flows into the diversion channel around Fargo on the North Dakota side of the river.

Minnesota and upstream opponents are fighting the project in court. The project would redirect floodwaters on the north-flowing river around Fargo, but would inundate farmland south of the cities during times of serious flooding. Minnesota has refused to issue permits for work on its side.

NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — John Gibson made 37 saves for his fourth shutout of the season, rookie Joseph Cramarossa scored his fourth goal and the Anaheim Ducks beat the Minnesota Wild 1-0 on Tuesday night.

Gibson stalled the league’s fourth-highest scoring team, beating Minnesota and former coach Bruce Boudreau for the first time in three meetings.

The Wild were 0 for 5 on the power play and lost in regulation for the first time in six games and the fifth time since the start of December, a span of 34 games. Devan Dubnyk made 22 saves.

Cramarossa scored for the first time in 16 games 4:38 into the first period. Corey Perry’s shot from Dubnyk’s left side was stopped, but the puck dropped near Dubnyk’s feet and Cramarossa alertly tapped it in.

Following the goal, Anaheim went nearly 10 minutes without a shot. Gibson had the cushion he needed, though.

Gardy…

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — New Arizona Diamondbacks bench coach and former longtime Minnesota Twins manager Ron Gardenhire has prostate cancer.

The 59-year-old Gardenhire revealed the diagnosis in a meeting with reporters on Tuesday, saying it was the only time he would talk publicly about the subject this spring.

Gardenhire says he received the diagnosis about a week ago after tests in Minnesota and would undergo surgery to remove the prostate gland, probably the second week in April.

He says doctors believe they caught the cancer early and that the surgery would leave him cancer-free.

Gardenhire managed the Twins for 13 seasons before being fired after the 2014 season.

He was special assistant to Twins general manager Terry Ryan last year before being hired as the top assistant to new Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo.

IOWA-ASSISTANT COACHES

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa has hired North Dakota State offensive coordinator Tim Polasek as its line coach and Kelton Copeland as its wide receivers coach.

Hawkeyes coach Kirk Ferentz announced the additions to his staff on Tuesday.

Polasek had spent the past three seasons at North Dakota State, an FCS powerhouse that beat Iowa in Iowa City in 2016.

Copeland had been with Northern Illinois the past four years, coaching the wide receivers. He spent the previous two seasons at South Dakota.

Polasek replaces Brian Ferentz, who was promoted to offensive coordinator last month. Copeland will take over for Bobby Kennedy, who left the program after the receiving corps struggled mightily last season.

He was arrested at a game last week and banned by Madison Square Garden chairman James Dolan during a scuffle with security guards. The sides reconciled during a meeting orchestrated by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and Hall of Famer Michael Jordan. Oak says he’s not coming back until he gets an apology.

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is renewing his attack on the “fake news media” as the controversy surrounding the ouster of his national security adviser widens and there’s more talk of Congress investigating suspected Russian meddling in the U.S. presidential election last year. Trump tweeted this morning, “The fake news media is going crazy with their conspiracy theories and blind hatred.” He says, “This Russian connection non-sense is merely an attempt to cover-up the many mistakes made in Hillary Clinton’s losing campaign.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has his first White House meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu today. Ahead of the meeting, a senior White House official told reporters yesterday that Trump is eager to begin facilitating a peace deal between the Israelis and the Palestinians and is hoping to bring them together soon. But the official also said that peace, not a two-state solution, is the goal.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Police in Malaysia have arrested a woman in connection with the death of the half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Kim Jong Nam lived long enough to tell medical workers that he had been attacked with a chemical spray at Kuala Lumpur International Airport on Monday. Malaysian police say a woman arrested at the airport was carrying Vietnamese travel documents.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Hundreds of people in Wellington, New Zealand have been evacuated as wildfires threaten their homes. HOUSTON (AP) — A federal judge has ordered a civil trial of the Texas prison system and its leadership in a civil rights lawsuit arising from the heat-related death of an inmate. The judge says Larry Gene McCollum was among 22 inmates who have died front the heat in Texas prisons since 1998.
