Jamestown  (CSi)  The Jamestown Public School Board  this month was updated on a progress report concerning  the Citizen’s Advisory Committee’s  recommendations on the status of school facilities.

Superintendent Rob  Lech said the Citizen’s Advisory Committee is touring buildings and reviewing reports in order to make a recommendation to the School Board for facility and educational adequacy needs. The work includes input on a 10-year capital maintenance plan for all school facilities that includes plans for new boilers, air circulation systems and windows.

At Monday’s meeting,  Board President Roger Haut suggested putting photos from the facility tours online so the public can view what needs to be done in a virtual tour.

The meeting was recorded by CSi 10 The Replay Channel, with replays starting Tuesday.

CANNON BALL, N.D. (AP) — State and federal authorities have told Dakota Access oil pipeline protesters at an encampment in North Dakota to leave. But many in the camp say they’re not going.

The deadline is Wednesday. It comes amid concerns that spring flooding could wash tons of trash into nearby rivers. State officials are warning of an environmental disaster if the camp isn’t cleaned up and closed.

Some in the camp say the flood fears are overblown. They plan to seek higher ground, but have no plans to leave despite the threat of arrest.

Tiffanie Pieper, of San Diego, says: “If we don’t stand now, when will we?”

Pipeline opponents say the $3.8 billion project to move North Dakota oil to Illinois threatens the environment. Dallas-based developer Energy Transfer Partners disputes that.

North Dakota Governor, Doug Burgum’s office says more than 230 truckloads have been hauled out as of Monday.

Protesters have been at the campsite since August to fight the $3.8 billion pipeline. Opponents say the pipeline threatens drinking water and cultural sites. Dallas-based developer Energy Transfer Partners disputes that.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota Senate is considering a proposal that would halt wind-generation projects in the state for two years.

Republican Sen. Dwight Cook is worried North Dakota’s burgeoning wind-energy industry may be threatening the state’s coal-fired power plants.

He says the state’s wind industry more enjoys favorable tax incentives and less onerous regulations than coal factories, putting them at an unfair advantage.

Republican Rep. Mike Brandenburg is one of the most pro-wind lawmakers in the Legislature.

He says the Senate proposal “sends a bad message” to industry and investors, and he fears the state could lose tax revenue and jobs to other states if the measure is approved.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe is facing a budget shortfall of nearly $6 million due to declining revenue at its casino.

Tribal leaders say a slowing economy and a snowy winter contributed to losses at the Prairie Knights Casino. Also, the closure of the casino’s main access road due to the oil pipeline protest impacted the facility’s bottom line.

Tribal financial officer Jerome Long Bottom says the tribe will face some tough choices in the months ahead on what to fund. The casino’s turnaround depends on how quickly Highway 1806 is reopened and how long it takes to entice customers to return.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A Senate committee is holding hearing on rules written to oversee the state’s voter-approved medical marijuana initiative.

The 81-page bill sponsored by both Republican and Democratic leaders. But it took out provisions to smoke pot for medicinal purposes or to grow your own,

An amended version of the bill still does not allow residents to grow pot as medicine but they would be able to smoke it provided a physician finds that no other form such as marijuana oils or pills would help.

The Senate Appropriations Committee is debating the amended version of the bill on Tuesday.

The North Dakota Compassionate Care Act won 65 percent voter approval in November. It allows the use of marijuana as medicine for people who suffer from one of several debilitating illnesses.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — The number of farms and ranches in North Dakota dropped slightly last year.

The federal Agriculture Department estimates 29,800 agricultural operations in the state in 2016, down 200 from 2015.

The number of small farms and ranches in terms of sales increased, while the number of large operations declined.

Land in farms and ranches totaled 39.1 million acres, down 100,000 acres from 2015.

The average size of an operation was up 5 acres, to 1,312.

HORSE RACING

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Former Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner Charismatic was found dead in his stall Sunday at a thoroughbred retirement farm in Kentucky. Preliminary results from a necropsy indicate that the 21-year-old chestnut colt suffered a fractured pelvis, which caused the horse to hemorrhage.

Charismatic’s bid to win the Triple Crown in 1999 came to a disappointing end with a dramatic leg injury near the finish line at the Belmont Stakes.

In world and national news…

LISBON, Portugal (AP) — A former CIA agent living in Portugal is going to prison in Italy after being convicted of involvement in a U.S. program called rendition that kidnapped suspects for interrogation. Her lawyer says police took Sabrina de Sousa to a Portuguese jail to await extradition. De Sousa was among 26 Americans convicted for kidnapping suspect Osama Moustafa Hassan Nas, also known as Abu Omar, from a Milan street in 2003.

CAIRO (AP) — A spokesman for the Libyan Red Crescent says more bodies are expected to wash ashore in western Libya, where at least 74 drowned migrants were found. Mohammed al-Misrati says a torn rubber boat was found nearby and that such boats usually carry up to 120 people. Migrant deaths are at record levels along the key smuggling route.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Only scattered showers are forecast today in Northern California where a strong storm moved through the area. Drenching rain sent creeks and rivers topping their banks, hundreds of homes were evacuated and several thousand people found themselves trapped in a rural hamlet. A levee break along the San Joaquin (san wah-KEEN’) River yesterday prompted an evacuation order for about 500 people while the breach was repaired.

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — The United Nations children’s agency is warning of a widespread famine threat putting almost 1.4 million children are at “imminent risk of death” in parts of South Sudan, Nigeria, Somalia and Yemen. The UNICEF announcement comes a day after famine was declared in parts of Unity state in South Sudan, where civil war has raged since late 2013 and where severe inflation has made food unaffordable.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — A Taliban splinter group is claiming responsibility for a group suicide bombing that killed six people outside a courthouse in northwestern Pakistan. The attack is the latest in a wave of militant assaults across the troubled country that has killed over 100 people since last week.
