BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Investigators say a fire that destroyed a North Dakota church recently purchased by a white supremacist was set.

The state fire marshal’s office says the fire was started by an “open flame device” near a door of the former Zion Evangelical Free Church in Nome.

Craig Cobb bought the century-old building for $8,000 and estimates his loss at more than double that because he had moved in some furniture. He said he welcomes the finding.

The fire marshal’s report says the building had no electrical service or heat. New locks were installed one day before the fire.

Cobb is serving four years of probation for terrorizing residents of Leith in 2013. He lives in Sherwood and says he has no plans to keep the property in Nome.

(CSi)  Oil prices were trading sharply higher after the United States launched a missile attack on Syria Thursday night. Oil rose in usually quiet after-hours trade by a dollar per barrel to $52.70 after news spread of roughly 50 Tomahawk missiles being launched from two U.S. warships in the Mediterranean Sea.

GasBuddy.com’s  senior petroleum analyst  Patrick DeHaan, says “As we’ve seen in the past, oil prices hate turmoil. Thursday night’s surge in prices comes as questions remain about military action in Syria moving future. Geopolitical tensions have surged (tonight) between some of the world’s largest oil producers, and the market, with concern abounding, will likely send oil prices higher. It is too early to know how severe or how long the impact to oil prices may be.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — How to vote on a Supreme Court nomination is a difficult political call, especially for the 10 Democrats up for re-election next year in states that President Donald Trump won.

Democrats have vowed to oppose Trump and face pressure from their liberal supporters to resist him at every opportunity.

Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill is voting against Gorsuch. She said she comes from a state where, no matter how she votes, half of the people are angry. The difference this time, she says, is “the ones who are happy are really happy.”

Indiana Sen. Joe Donnelly, North Dakota Sen. Heidi Heitkamp and West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin had a different calculus — they’re all supporting Gorsuch. Trump won all of their states by more than 19 percentage points.

BELCOURT, N.D. (AP) — Authorities have identified a Fort Totten woman who died after a crash that happened while she was being pursued by police in Rolette County. The Highway Patrol says 25-year-old Clarice Brown was driving a car that fled from police investigating a reported disturbance at Sky Dancer Casino on U.S. Highway 281 early Monday. Brown died of her injuries on Tuesday. A passenger in the car was injured but later released from a hospital.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A group of doctors is offering to pay for a surgical simulator if North Dakota State University stops using live animals for its trauma life support training.

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine says it will pick up the $3,235 tab for the simulator if the university and Sanford Health stop using live pigs for the course. The advocacy group has been working for the last decade to stop the practice, and says North Dakota State is one of the few programs that still uses live pigs.

University officials say the program is committed to the well-being of animals in its care and also providing the best training possible. They say the exercise meets all federal guidelines.

The doctors’ group has organized a protest Thursday on campus.

Taylor Rogers (1-0) worked the seventh for the victory, and Brandon Kintzler pitched a perfect ninth for his first save. Twins relievers have logged 10 scoreless innings, three games into the season.

FROZEN FOUR

MINN DULUTH-HARVARD…

CHICAGO (AP) — Alex Iafallo tipped in Willie Raskob’s shot with 26.6 seconds remaining to lift Minnesota Duluth to a 2-1 victory over Harvard in the Frozen Four semifinals Thursday night.

A rather slow game ended in spectacular fashion when Raskob took a pass from Joey Anderson and fired the puck toward the slot. Iafallo directed it between Merrick Madsen’s pads to break the tie.

Minnesota Duluth (28-6-7) hung on when Harvard’s Luke Esposito hit the crossbar with four seconds remaining after a scramble in front of the net.

That sent the Bulldogs to their third championship game and their first since the 2011 team brought home the program’s lone title. They’ll face the Denver-Notre Dame winner Saturday.

Anderson scored in the first period. Hunter Miska stopped 39 shots, and Minnesota Duluth improved to 16-1-3 in its last 20 games.

The Bulldogs also stopped Harvard’s 16-game win streak and 18-game unbeaten run.

Tyler Moy scored his 22nd goal for the Crimson (28-6-2). Madsen made 36 stops, but Harvard came up short in its 13th Frozen Four — and first since 1994.

CHICAGO (AP) — Dylan Gambrell scored twice, Tariq Hammond had a goal and two assists, and Denver routed Notre Dame 6-1 on Thursday night to advance to the Frozen Four championship.

Top-seeded Denver dominated from the start, using a blend of speed, precision and power to overwhelm the Fighting Irish. Emil Romig and Henrik Borgstrom scored in the first period, and the Pioneers put it away with three more in a 4:11 span in the second.

Denver also made it to the national semifinals last year, falling 4-2 to eventual champion North Dakota in heartbreaking fashion. The Fighting Hawks advanced with two goals in the final 56.8 seconds, and the Pioneers have been on a mission ever since that loss in Florida last year.

Next up is Saturday night’s final against conference rival Minnesota Duluth, which edged Harvard 2-1 in the first semi at the United Center. The Pioneers (32-7-4) and Bulldogs split two games in Denver on consecutive nights in December.

Denver is going for its first title since 2005 and the eighth overall for one of college hockey’s marquee programs.

WOMENS HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP…

GERMANY-US

PLYMOUTH, Mich. (AP) — Hilary Knight scored 1:06 into the game and Kelli Stack added a goal midway through the first period to give the U.S. a cushion that it wasn’t content with in an 11-0 victory over Germany on Thursday night in the women’s hockey world championship semifinals.

The Americans, who scored five times in the second period and finished with 50 shots, will face Canada for gold on Friday night. They will be shooting to win a fourth straight world championship final against the rival Canadians, who beat them in the 2014 Olympics.

Nicole Hensley stopped eight shots for the U.S. for a shutout needing to break a sweat.

The Germans will face Finland in the bronze-medal game Friday, aiming for their first medal in the International Ice Hockey Federation world championship. The Finns have won 11 bronze in 17 the women’s world championships.

PLYMOUTH, Mich. (AP) — Marie-Philip Poulin had a goal and an assist in a 2-plus minute span of second period, helping Canada pull away and beat Finland 4-0 on Thursday night in the women’s hockey world championship semifinals.

The Canadians will face the winner of the U.S.-Germany game Friday night for gold.

MASTERS…

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — Charley Hoffman was too hot to catch. Dustin Johnson was too sore to play.

Hoffman has the first-round lead at the Masters, taming Augusta National during an afternoon in which the top-ranked Johnson had to withdraw because of a back injury. Hoffman bogeyed two of his first five holes before carding seven birdies over the next 11 to take a commanding four-stroke lead over William McGirt. No other players broke 70.

Hoffman’s lead is the largest at the Masters for the opening round since Jack Burke Jr. led by four through 18 holes of the 1955 tourney.

Lee Westwood ran off five straight birdies late in the afternoon and salvaged a 70. Only eight other players broke par, a group that included Phil Mickelson, Olympic gold medalist Justin Rose and Sergio Garcia.

Johnson’s Masters experience ended before he teed off. He hurt his lower back Wednesday while falling down a flight of steps in the home he is renting for the tournament. Johnson walked to the first hole as if he would play in the final group of the day, but changed his mind at the last possible moment.

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (AP) — A teenage hockey player who attacked a referee during the final seconds of the junior college national championship game in New York has pleaded guilty to assault.

Nineteen-year-old Cheektowaga resident Brandon Day was arraigned Thursday. He’ll get three years of probation for the attack during a game between Erie Community College and Dakota College of Bottineau at Broome Community College in February.

Authorities say the Erie college student was serving a penalty but bolted onto the ice before his penalty was over. Video shows him skating toward the official and knocking him backward. Two other officials quickly intervened with several players and subdued him.

A defense lawyer says Day has stress and anxiety issues and is getting treatment.

Day also must pay the referee’s medical expenses.

Day’s team lost 7-4.

In world and national news…

Update…

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate has confirmed Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch, bringing a contentious 14-month partisan battle to a close after the death of Justice Antonin Scalia.

The vote was 54-45 on Friday. The victory gives President Donald Trump’s 49-year-old nominee a lifetime spot on the court and his party a much-needed political win after failing to pass legislation on health care and other issues.

The final confirmation vote came after Senate Republicans rewrote the chamber’s rules, voting to eliminate the 60-vote filibuster threshold on Supreme Court nominees. The change allowed the Senate to proceed to the final vote with a simple majority.

Democrats opposed Gorsuch in part because Senate Republicans blocked former President Barack Obama’s nominee, Merrick Garland, last year.

BEIRUT (AP) — World leaders have rallied around the United States after it launched a missile strike on a Syrian air base in response to this week’s chemical attack, while Russia condemned the move and suspended coordination with the U.S. in Syria’s congested skies. The attack, which marked the first time the U.S. has targeted President Bashar Assad’s forces, was condemned by his allies in Russia and Iran but hailed by the Syrian opposition and its backers, who hope for a turning point in the civil war.

BEIRUT (AP) — The office of Syria’s President is calling the U.S. missile strike against one of its air bases in central Homs “reckless” and “irresponsible.” The statement Friday said the strikes were “shortsighted” and reflect a continuation of policy regardless of which administration that is based on targeting and “subjugating people.”

PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — The U.S. missile strikes on Syria are overshadowing the second day of talks between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. When the leaders meet later Friday, North Korea’s nuclear ambitions and the U.S-China trade imbalance as well as other points of tension are expected to be discussed.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The year began with a burst of hiring in January and February, along with solid pay growth. It all added up to a picture of confident employers and ample opportunities for job applicants with the right qualifications. The question now is whether businesses extended that streak or held back on hiring in March.
