Valley City (CSi)  The North Dakota Highway Patrol reports, two Valley City people were injured in a rollover west of Valley City Saturday afternoon about 3:25 pm.

34 year-old driver Joshua Brouse  and 32 year-old Kristine Brouse, of Valley City, were pulling an unloaded flatbed trailer westbound on I- 94 near mile marker 290, a mile west of Valley City.  As Brouse passed another vehicle a strong wind gust blew the trailer to the side, causing the vehicle to lose control.

The vehicle and trailer slide into the north ditch where it overturned multiple times.  Neither occupants wore seat belts. The driver suffered minor injuries. The passenger was ejected, suffering serious injuries.

Both were transported to the hospital in Valley City. Kristine was later flown to a Fargo Hospital. They were both not wearing their seatbelts.

City Fire Chief, Jim Reuther says the fire at the gravel road north of the Village at 16th Street Southeast involving about a 30 by 30 foot area was likely caused by discarded smoking materials in the area of dry vegetation.

Five city fire units and 18 fire fighters responded and were on the scene about 25 minutes..

Mandan  (CSi) — Morton County law enforcement on Sunday were working to investigate the circumstances behind the death of a man whose body was found in the Cannonball River.
The Bismarck Tribune reports, Morton County Sheriff Kyle Kirchmeier said deputies received a call around 11:30 a.m. Sunday of a body in the Cannonball River, near the Missouri River.

Deputies found the body of an unidentified male in the water and were on scene until about 3:30 p.m., Kirchmeier said.

Kirchmeier was unable to provide the identity of the individual as law enforcement were still working Sunday evening to notify family members. He said further details would be provided in a press release on today.

MOORHEAD, Minn. (AP) — An acquaintance of a man fatally shot in Moorhead could face charges as early as Monday.

Police say the suspect remains jailed in Clay County on a possible charge of first-degree manslaughter. The man is being held in the death of 28-year-old Jacob Glover, a father of three from West Fargo, North Dakota.

Officers found Glover wounded in the driveway of the suspect’s neighbor. He was taken to Sanford Medical Center where he later died.

Police say Glover and the 25-year-old suspect were acquaintances who had a dispute.

NECHE, N.D. (AP) — U.S. officials say commercial and passenger vehicles that normally travel through the Neche Port of Entry in northeastern North Dakota will have to take another route because flooding has closed state Highway 18.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said Sunday that vehicles can go through ports at Pembina, which is east of Neche, and Walhalla, which is west of Neche, as an alternate travel route.

Officials say water crossing the highway south of the port of entry at Neche has made the roadway impassable.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Conference committees will rule at the Capitol this week, as North Dakota legislators continue seeking to reconcile bills.

Lawmakers’ goal of finishing 10 days before a required May 1 deadline is looking fantastical, with several contentious measures and unfinished budget bills still to work through.

Major issues still in play include mineral rights under Lake Sakakawea, the fate of a nursing school about to cost a lot more state money, and regulation of medical marijuana.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — A committee investigating changes to Minot’s snow plan says more equipment — and more money -_might be the only way to speed up snow removal on city streets.

Assistant public works director Jason Sorenson didn’t have many recommendations for Minot City Council’s Public Works and Safety Committee on March 29, but he said that the amount of equipment and personnel available to tackle snow removal during big storms might need to change.

The Minot Daily News reports the city has eight blades and three plows and typically takes 72 to 96 hours to make a pass through Minot.

Sorenson said Minot’s snow removal efforts were complicated this winter due to equipment breakdowns.

Sorenson said the city may need to lease newer equipment that is less prone to breakdown.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has issued an air quality alert for western parts of the state because of smoke from Kansas fires.

The affected areas listed in Saturday’s alert include the Red Lake Indian Reservation and the cities of Ortonville, Fergus Falls, Moorhead, Detroit Lakes, East Grand Forks and Wheaton.

Officials say it’s important for people with lung disease, respiratory disease or a heart condition to monitor the air quality. Parents should monitor conditions for their children, especially those with asthma.

Conditions are expected to improve in the evening as winds shift and carry smoke out of the area.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A $57.5 million bond approved by Bismarck voters on March 7 will be used by the city’s public schools to target classroom needs.

The  bond includes school construction projects that will be targeting the middle schools and spread over five years.

Money will be allocated for new additions at middle schools, Century High School, and will allow for renovations at the Bismarck High School.

Over the next five years the booming district is expected to see 977 more high school students and 530 more students at the middle schools.

Superintendent Tamara Uselman says student enrollment isn’t anticipated to plateau until it hits 14,500 or 15,000 students. The district is projected to reach 14,500 in 2021.

ARCHERY TOURNAMENT

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Students from Hankinson took top honors in this year’s National Archery in the Schools Program state tournament.

The North Dakota Game and Fish Department reports that Hankinson claimed top honors in the elementary, middle school and high school divisions.

Overall individual winners were Hankinson archers Clayton Stone and Jaycee Brown.

A record 614 archers competed in the March tournament in Minot. Winning teams and the top 10 individuals qualify for the national tournament in May in Louisville, Kentucky.

BISMARCK—Sage grouse are being airlifted into southwestern North Dakota with high hopes that this native bird can be saved here.

The operation airlift started last week, and it may be another week until the North Dakota Game and Fish Department crew is able to capture enough wild birds in Wyoming to meet its goal of 40 females and 20 males

The once plentiful bird has declined to near extinction in this state and the ongoing project to transplant them and hopefully reinvigorate the population has an air of desperation.

CHICAGO (AP) — Miguel Sano and Jorge Polanco homered to back Ervin Santana’s six scoreless innings as the Minnesota Twins beat the Chicago White Sox 4-1 on Sunday.

Santana (2-0) held the White Sox to two singles and lowered his ERA to 0.69. Minnesota, which finished with the worst record in the majors last season, has the top mark in the American League at 5-1 after taking two of three from Chicago.

Jose Quintana (0-2) regrouped from a rough opening day start to allow two runs and strike out seven in 6 1/3 innings. Quintana, who has been the subject of trade speculation for the rebuilding White Sox, gave up six runs and three homers against Detroit in his season debut. Last year, he was an All-Star and set career bests for ERA (3.20) and strikeouts (181).

LOS ANGELES (AP) — D’Angelo Russell made a 3-pointer as time expired and the Los Angeles Lakers overcame a huge game by Karl-Anthony Towns and defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves 110-109 on Sunday night.

Tyler Ennis added a career-high 20 off the bench for Los Angeles, which has won a season-high four consecutive games.

Towns had 40 points on 17-of-22 shooting from the floor and grabbed 21 rebounds, one shy from tying his career high. Andrew Wiggins scored 41 points for Minnesota, which lost its fourth straight and has dropped 10 of its last 13.

Ignoring the potential draft-lottery implications, the Lakers were content to allow Towns and Wiggins run wild while containing the rest of the Timberwolves. Only four Minnesota players had scored before Omri Casspi made a layup with 6:43 remaining.

Los Angeles now has the third-worst record in the NBA, moving one game ahead of Phoenix in the win column.

OLYMPIC SKI JUMP…

RED WING, Minn. (AP) — An Olympic-level ski jump is coming to southeastern Minnesota.

Goodhue County commissioners last week approved new zoning and a permit for the ski jump south of Red Wing.

The jump is expected to bring as many as 80,000 new visitors to the Red Wing area each year, including athletes training for the Olympics. More visitors are expected as the second half of the park opens in several years.

Project spokesman Dennis Egan says work on the $18 million project could begin as early as next month. The project also includes plans for a concert venue, cross-country skiing course and an event center.

Red Wing is home to the American Ski Jumping Hall of Fame and Museum, which opened in 2014 inside the St. James Hotel.

MASTERS…

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — Sergio Garcia is no longer in the conversation of outstanding golfers to never win a major. Not after he slipped his arms into a green jacket on Sunday.

Garcia has won the Masters in comeback fashion, beating Justin Rose in a sudden-death playoff. The 37-year-old Spaniard trailed Rose by two shots with six holes remaining before ending his two decades of close calls and major meltdowns in major tournaments.

Rose sent his first playoff drive into the trees on 18 and managed to punch out before failing to sink a 15-foot par putt. That opened the door for Garcia to win the title by two-putting from 12 feet out. Garcia wasted no time wrapping up the Masters, sinking a birdie putt before crouching in disbelief while hearing chants of “Ser-gee-oh! Ser-gee-oh!” from the gallery. Rose patted his opponent on the cheek before they embraced.

Garcia and Rose began the final round tied for the lead before carding 3-under 69s to finish at minus-9. Garcia’s birdie putt made him the third Spaniard to don a green jacket, joining the late Seve Ballesteros (SHE’-vee by-eh-STEHR’-ohs) and Jose Maria Olazabal (oh-lah-THAH’-bul).

Charl Schwartzel closed with his second straight 68 to finish third at 6 under, one shot ahead of Matt Kuchar (KOO’-chur) and second-round co-leader Thomas Pieters. Paul Casey’s 4-under total was one better than Rory McIlroy and Kevin Chappell.

NASCAR-TEXAS

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Jimmie Johnson has earned his first win of the Monster Energy season, going from the back of the field to Victory Lane at Texas Motor Speedway.

The seven-time Cup champion charged under Joey Logano with 16 laps to go and claimed his 81st career victory. Johnson had to start at the back of the 40-car field because of a tire change after a spin in qualifying.

It was Johnson’s seventh victory at Texas, six coming in the last 10 races there.

Points leader Kyle Larson finished second for the fourth time this season. Logano, polesitter Kevin Harvick and Dale Earnhardt Jr. rounded out the top five.

F1-CHINESE GP

SHANGHAI (AP) — Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton steered clear of a chaotic start at the Chinese Grand Prix and coasted to victory, his fifth title at Shanghai.

Hamilton started from pole position and led from beginning to end to capture the 54th race title of his career and his first of the new Formula One season.

INDYCAR LONG BEACH

LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Not once did James Hinchcliffe think his career was over after a near-fatal accident in 2015.

The IndyCar star nearly bled to death after wrecking in practice at the Indianapolis 500, and even though his injuries sidelined him the rest of the season, he knew he’d be back.

Indeed, he ran a full season last year, then had a successful stint on “Dancing With the Stars” in which he raised his profile while finishing second on the show.

At long last, he’s got his first win on the race track since his accident.

Hinchcliffe won a three-lap shootout to the finish Sunday on the streets of Long Beach to win in a Honda for Schmidt-Peterson Motorsports. It was the Canadian’s first victory since 2015 at New Orleans, a month before his accident at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Hinchcliffe’s life was saved nearly two years ago by the at-track safety crew that smartly pinched off the blood flow and raced him into surgery.

TENNIS-DAVIS CUP…

BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — Australia advanced to the Davis Cup semifinals when Nick Kyrgios (KEER’-ee-ohs) beat late substitute Sam Querrey of the United States 7-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the first reverse singles match. That gave the Australians an insurmountable 3-1 lead.

In world and national news…

LUCCA, Italy (AP) — Foreign ministers from the Group of Seven nations are gathering for a meeting given urgency by the chemical attack in Syria and the U.S. military response, with participants aiming to pressure Russia to end its support for President Bashar Assad. Last week’s nerve gas attack in the rebel-held town of Khan Sheikhoun, which killed more than 80 people, stirred President Donald Trump to strike for the first time at Assad’s forces.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump’s national security adviser is calling on Russia to re-evaluate its support for Syrian President Bashar Assad, leaving open the possibility of additional U.S. military action against Syria. H.R. McMaster pointed to dual U.S. goals of defeating the Islamic State group and removing Assad from power.

WASHINGTON (AP) — After weeks of witnessing Washington’s hard-edged politics first-hand, Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch’s oath-taking moment is at hand. The 47-year-old Colorado jurist will have his official swearing-in at the White House within hours. It’s a case of the student letting the teacher lead this time _ Gorsuch will swear to uphold the Constitution in an oath-taking administered by Anthony Kennedy, the justice who Gorsuch once served as court clerk.

HEFEI, China (AP) — Homeowners in a central Chinese city were so opposed to the planned construction of a mosque in their neighborhood that they buried a severed pig’s head on the building site in protest. The dispute shows how a surge in anti-Muslim online sentiment in China is spreading into the offline world and risks further inflaming simmering ethnic tensions that have in the past erupted in bloodshed.

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel has closed its Taba border crossing to Egypt following a warning by its anti-terrorism office of an “imminent” militant attack there. Intelligence Minister Yisrael Katz said in a statement Monday there was intel regarding a potential “terror attack” against tourists in the Sinai peninsula.
