The week of April 24th has been designated, “Severe Summer Weather Awareness Week,” for the entire state of North Dakota.  This annual event is designed to remind the public of the dangers associated with severe summer weather including:  lightning, high winds, large hail, flash floods and tornadoes, all of which can cause severe property damage, personal injury, and even death.

will be broadcast over the National Weather Service all-hazards weather radio system, local AM/FM radio stations and local cable television interrupt systems.

The most common reason a community’s warning sirens are activated is to warn the public of a possible tornado.  However, sirens could also be activated to alert the public of other types of events that could be a danger to the
community.  Hearing the sirens is the signal to either tune into a local radio station or turn on the television, CSi Cable subscribers can to listen for official instructions.

Monday is Day 74 and the Legislature is racing to finish its work before the constitutional 80-day limit.

Forty-six-year-old Lori Pohanka-Kalama died on April 16, one day after she was pulled from a rain-swollen creek on the Fort Hood Army Base. She was a member of the Morgan’s Point fire and police dive team in far southeastern Texas.

The Star Tribune reports that the honor guard plans to remain at the Twin Cities airport while Pohanka-Kalama and her family await their flight to North Dakota Sunday evening.

Pohanka-Kalama was born in Grafton, North Dakota and grew up in Linton. A memorial service is scheduled Tuesday in Linton.

KFGO radio reports that the contract workers will receive $2,000 bonuses if a deal is reach by May 22. Crystal Sugar spokeswoman Lisa Borgen says the company would also like to get pay and benefits on the table early in the process.

The company and union workers went through a bitter contract dispute that began in July 2011 and went on for almost two years.

American Crystal Sugar is owned by about 2,800 sugar beet growers in the Red River Valley. The company has two North Dakota factories, in Drayton and Hillsboro, and three Minnesota plants, in Crookston, East Grand Forks and Moorhead.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s Agriculture Department is encouraging people to be aware of the threat of invasive plant pests and diseases, especially after the months of protests against the Dakota Access oil pipeline.

Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring says donated firewood from around the country to protest camps in North Dakota could have been a pathway for unwanted insects and diseases to enter the state.

Goehring says that when the camps were closed and cleaned up in February, crews hauled firewood to a landfill to eliminate the risk of any pests spreading.

State and federal officials will be monitoring and surveying the camp areas and disposal sites this summer for pests such as emerald ash borer, gypsy moths and bark beetles.

The project, which is scheduled to begin later this spring, will focus on one colony and trap as many cats as possible in one day. The cats will be released to the colony once they’re sterilized with a notch in their ears to be easily identified.

After the first colony is completed, the program is planned to reach other nearby colonies until reaching the city limits.

The Bismarck Tribune reports the University of Mary saw an 11 percent growth in student enrollment from fall 2015 to fall of 2016. The total enrollment for the university is now 3,250 students, with more than 50 percent from out of state.

The university’s fundraising campaign, Vision 2030, encompasses three phases that is planned to be completed in the next 13 years.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Authorities have dropped 33 cases stemming from arrests of protesters against the Dakota Access crude oil pipeline.

Prosecutors and judges last month dismissed 33 misdemeanor cases, while another 14 cases were resolved by guilty pleas that month.

Most of the cases dropped last month related to criminal trespass charges from the late summer and fall.

Prosecutors struggled to prove those charges before Judge Allan Schmalenberger, who ruled in several cases that prosecutors had not met their burden of proving that protesters were given proper notice that they were on private land.

Protesters staged months of demonstrations to try to stop the four-state pipeline, saying it will pollute water and damage Native American sacred sites. Dallas-based Energy Transfer Partners says the line is safe.
