Valley City  (CSi) Slick road surfaces in the Valley City area stemming from a mix of precipitation led to crashes, Wednesday morning.


Barnes County Sheriff Chief Deputy Don Fibiger said on I-94, eight miles west of Valley City a semi lost control and  blocked an I-94 lane.


In another incident, a semi went into the median near mile maker 283.


In addition, other vehicles slid off the interstate east of Valley City, in the area of mile marker 300.


There were no indications of injuries.


 


 


LaMoure   (CSi) The North Dakota Highway Patrol reports a two vehicle crash on Monday just after 10-a.m. seriously injured a 76 year old Oakes woman.


The report says a 2002 Dodge pickup operated by 37 Ty Kirby, of Edmore, Michigan, was eastbound on a gravel road at Highway 1 at the intersection with Highway 27, when the vehicle failed to yield at the intersection with Highway 1. The vehicle crossed Highway 1 in front of a northbound Chrysler driven by 76 year old Mary Miller of Oakes.


The Chrysler struck the Dodge, as the Dodge entered the northeast ditch, with the Chrysler coming to rest on the roadway.


Kirby suffered minor injuries, while Miller sustained significant injuries.  Miller was taken to Mercy Hospital in Valley City for treatment, and transferred to a Fargo hospital.


The crash remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol.


Assisting at the scene were: LaMoure Fire & Rescue, Verona Fire & Rescue, and the LaMoure County Sheriff’s Office.


 


Valley City (CSi)   A  Valley City Police officer was injured Friday,  April 21st about 4:25-p.m., when the police squad car collided with an Open Door Center van.


Valley City Police Chief Phil Hatcher says the van and the squad car crashed in the middle of Main Street near the intersection of 2nd Avenue Northeast.


Barnes County Sheriff’s Deputy Dan Anderson says  the Valley City Police Car was northbound on 2nd Avenue Southeast, and the van was southbound on 2nd Avenue.  He The van turned east onto main street and collided with the patrol car.


The Barnes County fire and rescue squad  extricated the officer Sgt. Dana Rustebakke from the squad car, and he was  transported to Mercy Hospital and was treated for injuries and released.


The driver of the van Tanner Hovland was cited for Failure to Yield. He was not seriously  injured in the crash.


All occupants in van were also taken to the hospital for observation.


 


BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota Supreme Court has decided to retain state district court judgeships in Rugby and Jamestown.


The Rugby judgeship is being vacated by John McClintock and the Jamestown judgeship by John Greenwood. Both are retiring.


When a judge leaves the bench, justices are required by law to decide whether the judgeship should be retained, moved, or eliminated.


The high court recently decided that the Northeast Judicial District judge position in Rugby and the Southeast Judicial District judgeship in Jamestown both are “necessary for effective judicial administration.”


 


 


Jamestown  (CSi)  The Jamestown City Beautification Committee’s, Residential Recycling Task Force continues to meet regularly, in planning for the anticipated July 1, 2017 start up of residential recycling in Jamestown.


Task Force member, Bob Martin, on Wednesday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2 explained the process of picking up recyclables, the size of the garbage and recycling containers and costs.

He pointed out the recycling center will move later this spring to 1016 10th Street Southeast in Jamestown at the former Coca-Cola plant.   The date will be announced.

Jamestown  (CSi)  Stutsman County participated in the simulated statewide tornado exercise Wednesday morning, April 26, 2017, as part of Severe Summer Weather Awareness Week.  The exercise began at 11:18 a.m. with a test tornado warning initiated by the National Weather Service.


As part of the exercise, the county’s emergency operations plan was tested, which includes activating siren systems for several communities in the County.  The sirens in Medina, Buchanan, and Cleveland proved to be operational and ready for the summer weather season.  The siren in Streeter failed to activate.  Local Streeter officials will see that repairs are made.  Jamestown sirens were also tested; however, the siren located at Lifestyle Appliance in the SW part of town malfunctioned.  An effort is underway to get the siren repaired and ready for summer use.


In addition, the National Weather Service activated its All Hazards Radio System, which allowed local radio stations and cable TV providers to test their Emergency Alert Systems.


The CodeRED Weather Warning system that Stutsman County subscribes to was not part of the exercise.  CodeRED is designed to warn individuals that have addresses located within a warned area.  Since the “simulated” tornado warning did not identify specific warned boundaries, the system did not activate.  CodeRED Weather Warning activates for actual weather warnings where the warning boundaries are identified.

Jamestown  (CSi)  The South Central Homeless Coalition representing North Dakota’s Region VI, partnered with Jamestown Ministerial Association, Triumph Inc, and Edgewood Senior Living to assemble “Blessing Bags” of donated essential care items for people experiencing homelessness and or other hardships.


 


This second annual event established “Mercy Box” locations where individuals and organizations donated travel sized personal care items such as facial tissues, wet wipes, nail clippers, lip balm, hygiene products, nonperishable snacks, socks, small first aid kits, and feminine hygiene products. The South Central Homeless Coalition received donations from individuals and organizations.


 


Members of the Homeless Coalition board, Edgewood Senior Living staff and residents, Triumph Inc. staff and clients, and Region VI community members assembled 264 blessing bags on April 20, 2017. An additional donation of 27 pre-packaged bags came from Trinity Lutheran’s Sunday School program, for a grand total of 291 blessing bags.


 


Blessing bags will be shared with various organizations within Region VI such as South Central Human Service Center, Community Action, Freedom Resources, James River Correctional Center, Veteran Services, local churches, and Public Schools for distribution to individuals who are experiencing homelessness or extreme need.


 


The need to actively care for people experiencing homelessness in North Dakota is growing.  In 2016 it was estimated that over 10,000 people across the State experienced some form of homelessness. In January 2016 alone, 923 persons state-wide were documented as experiencing homelessness with 154 of those individuals being under the age of 18.


 


The purpose of the South Central Homeless Coalition’s purpose shall be to advocate, coordinate, and optimize services for homeless men, women and children within Region 6 of the South Central Human Service Center. BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Gov. Doug Burgum has signed a bill for the state to take over social services costs for the 53 counties under a two-year program that eliminates counties’ ability to tax for those services.


In exchange, the legislation ends a so-called tax relief fund that was used to give homeowners a 12 percent buydown of property tax rates.


The fund is expected to have $300 million when the current two-year budget period ends on June 30. The bill would use about $140 million from the fund to help balance the state budget, while the remainder would be applied to social services program costs.


The Republican governor called the legislation “sustainable property tax relief.”


Burgum says it’s more cost-effective than the buydown program, which he says “lacked incentive to control local spending.”


 




BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s Legislature will meet at least one more day this session as the House and Senate continue to iron out some differences in last-minute measures.


The Legislature had hoped to end the session late Wednesday. Instead, the lawmakers will reconvene Thursday morning.


House and Senate negotiators appeared to have solved some intraparty squabbles within the Republican-controlled Legislature on everything from the governor’s salary to a measure that affects public employee benefits. But the agreements came too late for a planned adjournment Wednesday.


Senate Majority Leader Rich Wardner insisted the final gavel would fall sometime Thursday, though lawmakers have missed a handful of similar deadlines recently while attempting to bank some time before the 80-day maximum set by the North Dakota Constitution.


 




WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) — A prisoner at the state penitentiary in Bismarck serving time for killing a co-worker has pleaded guilty to stabbing another inmate.


A South Central District judge on Wednesday sentenced 51-year-old Tovias Carrillo to 20 additional years in prison for attempted murder and possessing a weapon in a correctional facility.


Carrillo stabbed the inmate in the weight room in December 2015 with a tool he had made. Carrillo is already serving about 20 years for the 2014 death of Juan Palacios. Both worked for a landscape company.


It’s not the first time Carrillo has gotten in trouble while locked up. While awaiting trial on the Williston murder case, he attacked another inmate with a broken coffee mug.


 




BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Eight more people are set to make court appearances in the U.S. in what authorities say is a multimillion-dollar Jamaican lottery scam that victimized dozens of Americans.


The eight suspects were being extradited from Jamaica and were to appear in federal court in Bismarck, North Dakota, on Thursday.


Authorities allege the sophisticated scam bilked at least 90 mostly elderly Americans out of more than $5.7 million.


Fifteen suspects each are charged with 66 total counts of conspiracy, wire fraud, mail fraud and money laundering. Lavrick Willocks, who authorities say was the mastermind, pleaded not guilty in January.


Among the remaining defendants, one is awaiting trial in Rhode Island, one is in custody in Jamaica awaiting extradition to the U.S., and the remaining four defendants are still fugitives.


 






BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A man accused of dealing large quantities of drugs in the North Dakota oil patch has reached a plea agreement with federal prosecutors.


The deal calls for 55-year-old Zachary Smith, known as “Old School,” to plead guilty to two counts, including a conspiracy charge.


Authorities say Smith was part of an operation that in 2015 and 2016 moved methamphetamine and heroin from other states to North Dakota, most of which was sold out of hotel rooms in Williston.


Agents allegedly found more than $100,000 worth of meth and $60,000 worth of heroin in Smith’s hotel room.


Smith faces a maximum penalty of life in prison and a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years.


In exchange for the plea, prosecutors have agreed to drop four other counts, including a firearms charge.




 


BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota officials are urging motorists to watch for orange cones as the state’s 2017 road construction season begins.


Officials announced the start of the road construction season Wednesday. The North Dakota Department of Transportation has about 200 projects planned across the state, with $465 million of work taking place on highways.


Wayde Swenson, the department’s director of operations, says staying safe in work zones “is the ultimate goal for workers and motorists alike.”


Last year, motorists were involved in 157 crashes in work zones resulting in four deaths.


Some of the major projects this year include Interstate 94 through Bismarck-Mandan, state Highway 20 in Devils Lake, U.S. Highway 83 bridges over the Mouse River in Minot, state Highway 1804 from Williston to Epping and 32nd Avenue South in Fargo.


 


MEDORA, N.D. (AP) — The National Park Service says a proposed replacement communications tower poses no significant impact in the North Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park.


The park service said Wednesday it has issued a final environmental assessment for the proposed replacement tower.


The current tower provides communications that the park service says are essential to public safety and efficient operations for the western North Dakota park and the U.S. Forest Service.


The park service says it will issue Verizon Wireless a right-of-way permit to co-locate the company’s cellular equipment and replace the existing tower northeast of the park entrance and east of U.S. Highway 85.


The agency and Verizon determined only one tower was needed. The new 190-foot-high tower will replace an existing 220-foot-high tower, eliminating the need for aviation safety lighting.

ONALASKA, WIS. (Mark Potts) – VCSU golfers Cameron Rall and Nicole Heinitz were both named  2nd Team All Conference on Tuesday after the final round of the NSAA Conference Championships.


Rall led the Viking men with a 13th-place finish at the 72-hole tournament, while Heinitz led the women with a 14th-place finish. The top 14 individuals earned All Conference honors.


The 72-hole tournament began with 36 holes in the fall and concluded this week with rounds Monday and Tuesday at The Golf Club at Cedar Creek. The Viking men placed fourth out of six teams, while the VCSU women were fifth out of seven teams.


Valley City State’s men shot a 321 team total during Tuesday’s final round. Rall was the mark of consistency with two rounds of 80 in the fall and two rounds of 81 on Monday and Tuesday to place 13th. Jared Lentz finished with an 85 on Tuesday as he took 15th. Jeremie Pasitney shot his best round of the tournament as he moved up two spots to 18th in the final standings with a 79. Kyle Wiebe carded an 80 and Collin Hoss shot 81 on Tuesday.


Heinitz closed her tournament with a 94 on Tuesday, hanging on to the final All Conference spot by finishing 14th. Haley Christofferson fired a team-best round of 91 as she placed 18th overall. Mikayla Smith placed 25th and Megan McNamee finished in 27th to round out VCSU’s individual placers. Tory Anderson has her best round of the tournament with a 101 on Tuesday.


Bellevue University won both the men’s and women’s team competitions and had the top two individuals in both the men’s and women’s standings.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — Carl Pelini got buffaloed.


@FauxPelini, the parody Twitter account that took off when Bo Pelini was coach at Nebraska and continues with him at Youngstown State, was given the honor of naming a bison born April 11 at the National Buffalo Museum in Jamestown.


Faux Pelini, according to the Grand Forks Herald , chose “Carl.”


In real life, Carl is the older brother of Bo and his defensive coordinator at Nebraska and Youngstown State. In Faux Pelini’s tweets, which lampoon Bo’s mannerisms and volatility, “Carl” is portrayed to the account’s 447,000 followers as a foil, scapegoat or the butt of jokes.


Faux Pelini symbolically adopted a bison for $20 through the nonprofit Defenders of Wildlife shortly after the North Dakota State Bison defeated Iowa last September.


The museum, in celebration of the win, volunteered to name a calf in honor of Faux Pelini. Faux Pelini, who never reveals his true identity, asked that it be named Carl.


“This is a momentous day for human beings, bison and Carl Pelini,” Faux Pelini wrote in an email to The Associated Press on Tuesday. “Sometimes wonderful things (like Iowa losing) create other wonderful things (like our beautiful bison baby boy).”


A GoFundMe page was set up in Carl’s name to raise money to support the mission of the museum.

Rua’s first career slam came in the eighth and Shin-Soo Choo, who had already tripled in the inning, added a three-run homer to cap the late eight-run outburst.

BOSTON (AP) — Isaiah Thomas and Avery Bradley scored 24 points apiece to help the Boston Celtics beat the Chicago Bulls 108-97 and take a 3-2 lead in their first-round playoff series.


After the road team won each of the first four games, the Celtics won at home in Game 5 to earn a chance to eliminate the Bulls on Friday night in Chicago. A Bulls victory would force the series back to Boston for a decisive Game 7 on Sunday.


Dwyane Wade had 26 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists for Chicago.


But Wade and Robin Lopez were called for technical fouls 32 seconds apart with just under five minutes left, helping the Celtics to a 20-5 run that gave them a 104-89 lead.


WASHINGTON (AP) — Back at home, and back in charge, Bradley Beal scored 27 points, and John Wall added 20 points and 14 assists, leading the Washington Wizards to a 103-99 victory over the Atlanta Hawks for a 3-2 lead in their first-round Eastern Conference playoff series.


Dennis Schroder led the Hawks with 29 points, making a career high-tying five 3s, and 11 assists. But after his basket from beyond the arc pulled Atlanta within 101-99 with 70 seconds left, Wall responded with a 21-foot pull-up jumper.


A miss followed from Paul Millsap, who had 21 points and 11 rebounds, but after Wall’s jumper was off the mark, the Hawks seemed to waste too much time at the other end and the buzzer sounded.


 


 


NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE PLAYOFFS


 


ST. LOUIS (AP) — P.K. Subban had a goal and two assists and Vernon Fiddler scored with 5:05 left, sending the Nashville Predators to a 4-3 victory over the St. Louis Blues in Game 1 of their second-round playoff series.


The Predators lost Kevin Fiala to an ugly leg injury in the second period and blew a 3-1 lead before Fiddler poked a loose puck by Jake Allen in the third. It was the fifth career playoff goal for the 36-year-old Fiddler, who did not play in Nashville’s first-round sweep of Chicago.


Colin Wilson and Filip Forsberg also scored for Nashville, and Pekka Rinne made 27 saves.


Colton Parayko, Jaden Schwartz and Vladimir Sobotka scored for St. Louis. Allen finished with 28 stops.


Game 2 is Friday night.


 


 


ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Adam Larsson scored his second goal of the third period with 4:40 to play, and the Edmonton Oilers blew a two-goal lead in a wild third period before beating the Anaheim Ducks 5-3 in their second-round playoff series opener.


Mark Letestu scored two power-play goals and Cam Talbot made 33 saves for the upstart Oilers, who seized home-ice advantage from the Ducks with a four-goal final period.


Jakob Silfverberg scored the tying goal with 9:13 to play in regulation for the Ducks, who lost in regulation for the first time in 19 games since March 10.


Larsson scored just four goals in his first 85 games this season, but the Swedish defenseman improbably got two goals in 7 1/2 minutes.

 Houston Rockets owner Leslie Alexander has been fined $100,000 by the NBA for confronting a referee during live game action. The incident occurred Tuesday in the final minute of the first quarter during the Rockets’ 105-99 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — The Green Bay Packers have signed veteran offensive lineman Jahri Evans as they look to fill a hole up front left by the departure of free agent-right guard T.J. Lang.


Terms of the agreement were not announced Wednesday by general manager Ted Thompson.


The 33-year-old Evans joins the Packers following 11 seasons in New Orleans, where he played 169 regular-season games since being drafted in the fourth round in 2006. The 169 games are the most played by an active NFL offensive lineman in that span.


After blocking for Drew Brees in New Orleans, the durable Evans figures to be the favorite to replace Lang after the Pro Bowl guard signed with the Detroit Lions last month.


Evans has been voted to six Pro Bowls.


 


NFL-RAIDERS-LYNCH


ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) — Marshawn Lynch is coming out of retirement after agreeing on a two-year deal with the Raiders that paved the way for a trade to his hometown team in Oakland.


Lynch passed a physical Wednesday and agreed to a restructured two-year contract. Those were the final steps needed before Seattle could trade his rights along with a 2018 sixth-round pick to the Raiders for a 2018 fifth-rounder.


Lynch also must apply to the NFL for reinstatement from the retired list before he can play.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — Syracuse has signed Canadian high school star forward Oshae Brissett to a national letter of intent to play for the Orange next season.

BEIRUT (AP) — Syrian activists say airstrikes across the opposition-held Idlib province have killed at least 19 people, with some targeting ambulances and medical centers. The activist-run Idlib Media Center says the deaths include four people who were killed by barrel bombs dropped at the site of a chemical attack earlier this month.

Police arrested 45-year-old Dennis Dunn Wednesday after finding the woman in a pit inside a shed on Dunn’s property in Wilmington, Ohio. Police say two hours after the woman’s mother had reported her daughter missing, the mother called police at about 4 a.m. to report that she heard crying from the shed. Her daughter was treated at a hospital and released.
