FESSENDEN, N.D. (AP) — Two people accused of attacking a man with an ice auger are due in court next week on felony charges in Wells County.

Prosecutors say Alexander Lail and Deanna Neurohr used an ice auger to injure the leg of Jason Thomas last week. Authorities say he died of heart issues a few days after the attack.

Lail and Neurohr are charged with criminal conspiracy and conspiracy to commit aggravated assault.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A Fargo man charged with murder in the stabbing death of his friend last Christmas Eve has been sentenced to serve six years in prison on a reduced charge.

Timothy Porter reached a deal with prosecutors and pleaded guilty to manslaughter Wednesday. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison with four years suspended.

Authorities say Porter stabbed 26-year-old Derek Bjarnason (bee-YARN’-ah-suhn) in the chest at Porter’s home after a night of drinking. Bjarnason died later that day at a hospital.

Court documents show Porter was given credit for about four months already spent behind bars. He’ll be on probation for five years after his prison term. He also must pay $810 in fees.

DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) — A northeast North Dakota city is looking into sheriff’s office procedures for transporting inmates released from the regional jail after a man who was dropped off near the Ramsey/Benson county line was found dead in March.

Sixty-five-year-old Virgil Feather was incarcerated for six days last year for failing to make payments on a DUI charge from 2008. Feather disappeared Nov. 15 after he was released.

The Ramsey County Commission discussed departmental procedures Tuesday as they relate to transporting inmates released from the Lake Region Law Enforcement Center.

Authorities say Feather was dropped off near the county line with temperatures well above freezing.

Ramsey County Sheriff Steve Nelson says his department usually drops off inmates in the interest of community service.

None of the commissioners disagreed with the procedural review.

The FBI is currently investigating his death.

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) – President Donald Trump is celebrating the passage of the House Republican health care bill, saying he is confident it will get through the Senate.

Flanked by Republican lawmakers in the Rose Garden, Trump called President Barack Obama’s health care law a “catastrophe” and called the GOP bill “a great plan.”

Trump said “premiums will be coming down, deductibles will be coming down.”

Looking ahead, Trump said they’ll celebrate “when we get it through the Senate, and there’s so much spirit there.”

The president reordered his schedule Thursday as he watched the health care developments.

Trump is arguing the health care debate has “really brought the Republican Party together.”

He  noted that the party includes many different groups, from conservatives to more moderate Republicans, and that sometimes work at cross-purposes. But hashing out the details on health care, Trump says, helps lay the groundwork for other legislative lifts, such as overhauling the tax code. “This really helps it.”

He adds that he expects to have a “tremendous” four — or maybe even eight — years in office.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House has voted overwhelmingly to impose new sanctions on North Korea targeting its shipping industry and use of slave labor. The bipartisan legislation is aimed at thwarting North Korea’s ambitions by cutting off access to the cash the regime needs to follow through with its plans. The Senate must take up the measure now.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate is sending President Donald Trump the first big bill of his presidency. It’s a $1.1 trillion spending bill to keep the government running through September _ putting off, for now, battles over Trump’s U.S.-Mexico border wall and his promised military buildup. The lopsided, 79-18 Senate vote sends the huge bill to the White House in plenty of time to avert a midnight Friday shutdown deadline.

BAGHDAD (AP) — The United States and Iraq are in talks to keep American troops in the country after the fight against the Islamic State group is concluded. That’s according to a U.S. official and an official from the Iraqi government. They say the discussions are ongoing and nothing is finalized. But the talks point to a consensus that a longer-term presence of American troops in Iraq is needed to ensure that an insurgency does not bubble up again once the militants are driven out.
