Jamestown  (CSi)  Late Friday morning, the Jamestown City Fire Department deployed the Kodiak raft, on the James River, in search of a man that earlier Friday morning was seen floating on the James River in Jamestown.

Earlier Friday….

Jamestown (CSi) Jamestown Police is continuing with an investigation in a coordinated search for a man who was reported as floating in the James River, near Nickeus Park early Friday morning.

Lt. Opp says residents near the river called Jamestown Police shortly after midnight Friday, to report the man may have been on floatation device, and did not seem to be in distress.

Opp says neighbors  asked the man if he was alright, as the man reportedly asked for a beer before drifting past into the darkness.

A description of the man was not available, as the incident occurred in the dark with a fast river current.

Authorities have searched the riverbanks, the dam and bridges and watched the river but were unable to find  the man.

Police area asking that if the man was able to leave the river and is safe to call Jamestown Police and let them know is okay.

Jamestown  (NDFU- CSi)– Governor Doug Burgum has proclaimed May 7-13, 2017, as Farmers Union Youth Week, citing North Dakota Farmers Union’s dedication to enhancing leadership abilities in young people and cooperative education.

In the signed proclamation Burgum wrote, “The youth of our state are North Dakota’s most valuable resource.  Educating young people about the cooperative business model in present-day commerce is vital to North Dakota’s overall economy from a local, national, and international perspective, as well as our state’s agricultural industry.”

NDFU conducts county-sponsored classes and summer camps for rural and urban kids. More than 1,000 youths attend Farmers Union camps annually, which get underway in June for kids in grades 3-12.

At Farmers Union Camp, youth organize and operate their own cooperative – a camp store – as part of the organization’s educational focus on cooperatives. Other activities include water games, theme nights, sports, a campfire, talent show, dancing, games, skits, a camp project, and banquet.

Specially trained counselors facilitate activities and supervise campers at 14 different four- and five-day camps held throughout the summer at sites near Valley City and Elgin. Youth who register for camp by May 15 receive an early bird discount. Transportation is provided and scholarships are often available. For more information, go to www.ndfu.org.

Cando  (CSi)  The North Dakota Highway Patrol says  a  6-year-old boy was ejected from a vehicle and died Thursday, after the vehicle he was riding in with two other adults attempted to pass another car.

The crash happened at 3:33 p.m. 3 miles north of Cando on U.S. Highway 281 in northeast North Dakota.

Sgt. Robert Kennedy reported  that both vehicles were traveling northbound on the highway. A 1999 SUV, driven by a 52-year-old man from St. John, with a 47-year-old woman also from St. John and the 6-year-old, was heading to a rural farmstead. A 44-year-old man from Devils Lake was driving a 2014 Toyota Prius with two juvenile passengers, ages 8 and 10, from Cando.

Leading up to the crash, the Prius slowed down and the driver activated his turn signal to make a left hand turn onto 77th Street Northeast. The trailing SUV however, overtook the intersection to pass and was struck by the Prius on the passenger side. The SUV ended up in the east ditch and rolled over, and that’s when the child was ejected from the vehicle.

Law requires any child under the age of 7 to be in a car seat or booster, but the 6-year-old was only wearing a seatbelt, Kennedy said. The child was ejected due to being improperly secured in the seat and was later declared dead at the Towner County Medical Center.

The other passenger and the driver of the SUV were airlifted to Altru Hospital in Grand Forks and their conditions are unknown at this time.

The driver and passengers of the Prius, received  no injuries  and were all wearing seatbelts, including the 8-year-old who was properly secured in a car seat.

Kennedy said he would not comment on the relationship between the 6-year-old and others in the Mountaineer at the time. More information on the crash and people involved is expected to be released Friday evening.

The crash remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol.

Responding to the scene were the Towner County Sheriff’s Department, Cando Fire and Rescue and the Egeland Fire Department.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — The case of a man who allegedly held up a small-town North Dakota bank at gunpoint has been transferred to federal court.

Fifty-eight-year-old Jay Barker is accused of holding up the Citizens Community Credit Union in St. John on March 8. He has pleaded not guilty to armed bank robbery.

Authorities say Barker moved to North Dakota in the last year after he was released from an Idaho prison, where he served 17 years for armed robbery.

Four days after he was arrested, Barker escaped from the Rolette County Jail by locking a correctional officer in the cell. He was arrested the next day.

Barker was sentenced in state court to one year and one day in prison on the escape charge.

PHOENIX (AP) — Authorities say a potentially dangerous sex offender who escaped from an Arizona state hospital rehabilitation program late last month has been arrested in North Dakota.

Phoenix police announced Thursday evening that 38-year-old Randy Layton was taken into custody in Dickinson by the U.S. Marshals Service and arrangements are being made to extradite him to Arizona.

Police issued an arrest warrant Wednesday for Layton with full nationwide extradition.

Layton had been missing since April 29 when he removed an ankle monitoring bracelet and ran away from an off-site outing in northeast Phoenix.

Arizona State Hospital’s Arizona Community Protection and Treatment Center treats sexually violent patients under court order after they’ve served prison time for sex crimes.

Authorities say Layton was considered a moderate risk with the potential to harm others.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — A Minot man convicted of killing his ex-wife by stabbing her 44 times in the neck, face and chest has been sentenced to life in prison without parole.

A jury last December convicted 31-year-old Richie Wilder Jr. of murder in the November 2015 death of 30-year-old Angila Wilder as she slept in her bed. He was sentenced Thursday.

Wilder’s attorneys sought a sentence of 50 years in prison, with Wilder serving at least 30 years.

Judge Gary Lee called the slaying “a cold, calculated, cowardly act” before handing down the life term.

FESSENDEN, N.D. (AP) — Two people accused of attacking a man with an ice auger are due in court next week on felony charges in Wells County.

Prosecutors say Alexander Lail and Deanna Neurohr used an ice auger to injure the leg of Jason Thomas last week. Authorities say he died of heart issues a few days after the attack.

Lail and Neurohr are charged with criminal conspiracy and conspiracy to commit aggravated assault.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A Fargo man charged with murder in the stabbing death of his friend last Christmas Eve has been sentenced to serve six years in prison on a reduced charge.

Timothy Porter reached a deal with prosecutors and pleaded guilty to manslaughter Wednesday. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison with four years suspended.

Authorities say Porter stabbed 26-year-old Derek Bjarnason (bee-YARN’-ah-suhn) in the chest at Porter’s home after a night of drinking. Bjarnason died later that day at a hospital.

Court documents show Porter was given credit for about four months already spent behind bars. He’ll be on probation for five years after his prison term. He also must pay $810 in fees.

WATFORD CITY, N.D. (AP) — The attorney for the McKenzie County sheriff accused of misconduct says letters sent to Gov. Doug Burgum from the former special prosecutor in the case have violated his client’s due process rights.Defense lawyer Mike Geiermann is asking that the case against Gary Schwartzenberger be dismissed. The sheriff is accused of making excessive charges on his office credit card during a trip to a conference in Las Vegas in 2015. Schwartzenberger later paid for the charges, but a criminal affidavit alleges the charges were made in violation of a county policy.

The Bismarck Tribune reports the new prosecutor, Michael Mahoney, says the case is still intact and proceedings against the sheriff should continue.

DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) — A northeast North Dakota city is looking into sheriff’s office procedures for transporting inmates released from the regional jail after a man who was dropped off near the Ramsey/Benson county line was found dead in March.

Sixty-five-year-old Virgil Feather was incarcerated for six days last year for failing to make payments on a DUI charge from 2008. Feather disappeared Nov. 15 after he was released.

The Ramsey County Commission discussed departmental procedures Tuesday as they relate to transporting inmates released from the Lake Region Law Enforcement Center.

Authorities say Feather was dropped off near the county line with temperatures well above freezing.

Ramsey County Sheriff Steve Nelson says his department usually drops off inmates in the interest of community service.

None of the commissioners disagreed with the procedural review.

The FBI is currently investigating his death.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — University of North Dakota officials say they’re not surprised about a sex discrimination complaint over intercollegiate sports programs.

The federal Title IX case alleges that the college does not provide equal athletic opportunity for women. The complaint was filed last month after UND announced it was dropping women’s hockey and men’s and women’s swimming.

The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights says in a letter to UND President Mark Kennedy that investigators will conduct at least one on-site visit. The letter did not outline a timeline other than to promise “a prompt investigation of this complaint.”

UND spokesman Peter Johnson says a Title IX investigation was not unexpected. He says UND is gathering requested information and will work with investigators to “answer whatever questions they might have.”

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republicans are claiming a triumph by finally approving their centerpiece bill scuttling much of President Barack Obama’s health care law. But its pathway through the Senate will be at least as bumpy. And there’s little doubt the measure will change, assuming it survives. The House approved the bill Thursday by 217-213 with 20 GOP defections.

UNDATED (AP) — As Republicans move closer to dismantling Democratic former President Barack Obama’s health care law, Americans with serious illnesses are feeling uneasy. The GOP health care bill pushed through the House on Thursday leaves those with pre-existing conditions fearful of higher premiums and losing coverage altogether if the Affordable Care Act is replaced.

NEW YORK (AP) — President Donald Trump basked in the glow of legislative triumph before taking his first trip and making his first speech as president in his hometown of New York City. He celebrates House passage of a replacement for the Obama era Affordable Care Act, surrounded by GOP members of Congressed who took buses from the Capitol to the White House to join the president in the Rose Garden.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea has accused the U.S. and South Korean spy agencies of an unsuccessful assassination attempt on leader Kim Jong Un involving bio-chemical weapons. North Korea’s Ministry of State Security said Friday in a statement carried on state media that it will “ferret out and mercilessly destroy” the “terrorists” in the CIA and South Korean intelligence agency for targeting its supreme leadership.

BEIRUT (AP) — An international team set up to apportion blame for chemical weapons attacks in Syria has started investigating the deadly April 4 sarin gas attack in Idlib province. Director-General of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons Ahmet Uzumcu told The Associated Press on Friday that the team is already working and he was due to speak to its leader later in the day.
