Jamestown  (CSi)    The Jamestown Kiwanis Club raised more than $10,000 during their annual Pancake Day, on May 1, 2017. Over 1-thousand attended the event at the Jamestown Knights of Columbus Hall.

That was the most raised ever during  Pancake Day for the Jamestown club.

Hugo’s Family Marketplace has sponsored Jamestown Kiwanis Pancake Day the past  three years.

Bismarck  (PPR)  The delayed  wind farm project near Ashley, may soon be built.

Prairie Public Radio reports, the Merricourt Wind Power Project in McIntosh County was given siting approval in 2008, but was not built. The Public Service Commission had given the project siting approval in 2008. However, it was never built.

The developer has filed a new siting application – and the PSC has scheduled a hearing on it.

Commissioners Julie Fedorchak  and Randy Christmann say some of the proposed wind power projects couldn’t find anyone to buy the power, so they weren’t built.

Otter Tail Power Company has filed for an “advanced determination of prudence” for the Merricourt Wind Farm – to purchase the power.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The Dakota Access pipeline leaked 84 gallons of oil in South Dakota early last month, which an American Indian tribe says bolsters its argument that the pipeline jeopardizes its water supply and deserves further environmental review.

The state’s Department of Environment and Natural Resources says the April 4 spill was relatively small and was quickly cleaned up, and it didn’t threaten any waterways.

The agency posted a report in its website’s searchable database, but it didn’t take any other steps to announce it to the public, despite an ongoing lawsuit by four Sioux tribes seeking to shut down the pipeline.

Brian Walsh, an environmental scientist with the agency, said Wednesday that the state doesn’t issue news releases on spills unless they threaten the public’s health, a fishery or a drinking water system, and that no such threat existed in this case.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — U.S. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp wants a special prosecutor to investigate possible ties between President Donald Trump and Russia following the president’s firing of FBI Director James Comey.

The North Dakota Democrat says Comey’s firing “raises far more questions than it answers.”

Republican Sen. John Hoeven says the case has been made for Trump to fire Comey but the timing raises questions. He’s calling for a continued investigation by a bipartisan Senate committee into last year’s presidential election, “including any Russian interference.”

GOP Rep. Kevin Cramer did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment.

Comey traveled to North Dakota last year to open a FBI office in Williston and to visit with tribal officials at the Fort Berthold Reservation.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The Transportation Security Administration says security staff stopped a traveler from bringing a loaded pistol onto an airplane at the Bismarck airport. The TSA says it’s the third time this year a passenger has tried to bring a gun through Bismarck airport security.

Authorities say a TSA officer spotted the gun in the passenger’s carry-on bag Monday.   A police officer removed the gun which contained seven rounds, including one in the chamber.

The passenger was not cited by police, but the TSA says it expects to impose a civil penalty which can be as much as $7,500.

Passengers are allowed to carry unloaded firearms in their checked luggage.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — MDU Resources Group, Inc. says its first-quarter profits are up 12 percent from the same period a year ago.

The Bismarck-based energy, mining and construction company reported earnings from continuing operations of $35.5 million, or 18 cents per share for the first three months of the year. That compares with earnings pf $31.6 million, or 16 cents per share for the first quarter of 2016.

The company says colder weather in the three months ending March 31 boosted sales of natural gas and electricity, but it said snowy and wet conditions slowed work in its construction division.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota city has hired a consultant with a New York City hurricane recovery program as its National Disaster Resilience Program manager.

Beginning June 1, John Zakian will oversee Minot’s $74.3 million disaster program and its associated projects, plans and activities.

Zakian has experience in economic and housing development, finance, municipal services and disaster recovery consulting. He’s worked as a consultant for the New York City Office of Management and Budget, providing guidance as the city administers a federal $4.2 billion Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery plan following the devastation caused in 2012 by Hurricane Sandy.

Zakian will be working in conjunction with planning director and chief resilience officer Robert Davis, federal compliance officer Chris Owen and program adviser Cindy Hemphill.

In sports…

DICKINSON, N.D. (AP) — Dickinson State University is eliminating its baseball and golf programs as part of campus cost-cutting measures.

DSU is facing nearly $5 million in needed cuts during the next two years. The school says $400,000 of those cuts will come from athletics.

The baseball and golf programs will be discontinued after the 2017-18 season, unless the programs can raise enough money on their own.

DSU will allow athletes in the affected programs to contact other schools and will grant their release if they decide to transfer.

DSU isn’t the only university in the state to cut some of its sports programs. The University of North Dakota in Grand Forks in March said it was eliminating swimming and women’s hockey due to budget cuts.

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Democrats are united in demanding a special counsel be named to take over the federal investigation into Russia meddling in last year’s election. But they say that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein _ who recommended the controversial dismissal of FBI Director James Comey _ should not be the one to make such an assignment.

WASHINGTON (AP) — More controversy seems to be following Michael Flynn, the fired national security adviser. Before he went to work for President Donald Trump, Flynn set up a lobbying and consulting firm. And now there are questions about $80,000 in payments sent back to a former Turkish client. Flynn’s firm told the Justice Department that the payments were consulting fees. The client says they were refunds for lobbying that wasn’t performed. Investigators want to know whether Flynn has been forthcoming.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House says President Donald Trump stressed several issues in a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, including ending the civil war in Syria and improving U.S.-Russia relations. The White House says Trump made clear for the need for Russia to “rein in” the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad, along with Iran and its proxies. Russia and Iran are both aligned with Assad against rebel factions that want to remove Assad from office.

BEIRUT (AP) — U.S.-backed Syrian Kurdish forces say they have captured the country’s largest dam and a nearby town from the Islamic State group. The fighters known as Syrian Democratic Forces, mostly Kurdish-led but which also include Arab fighters, say they expelled IS militants from the Tabqa Dam and Tabqa town. It’s the latest IS stronghold to fall to the Kurdish-led fighters advancing toward the Islamic State group’s capital of Raqqa along the Euphrates River.

NEW YORK (AP) — Michael Parks, a prolific character actor and a favorite of directors Quentin Tarantino and Kevin Smith, has died. He was 77.

Parks’ agent, Jane Schulman, says the actor died Tuesday in Los Angeles. No cause of death was announced.

In a career that spanned five decades, Parks acted in more than 100 films and TV shows, including “Twin Peaks.” Many of his early starring roles were countercultural 1960s films, including “Wild Seed” and “Bus Riley’s Back in Town,” alongside Ann-Margret. He starred as a disillusioned, motorcycle-riding newsman in the 1969 series “Then Came Bronson.”

Parks’ career enjoyed a rebirth thanks to the interest of Tarantino, Smith and Robert Rodriguez. He had memorable parts in Tarantino’s “Kill Bill” films, Rodriguez’s “From Dusk till Dawn” and Smith’s “Tusk.”
