Sanborn  (CSi)  No injuries reported Thursday morning about 6:15 in Sanborn, when a faulty valve let an anhydrous ammonia field tank to leak, near the old elevator.

Barnes County Sheriff Randy McClaflin says two homes were evacuated as a precaution

Fire and Rescue crews contained the leak. No injuries were reported.

Jamestown  (CSi)  A 48 year-old  California man, Samuel Henry Hanna was sentenced to four years in prison.

On Wednesday, Hanna pleaded guilty to a Class A felony, drug charge, stemming from evidence gathered during a traffic stop by the Stutsman County Sheriff’s Office on March 28, 2017

Stutsman County Deputy Matt Thom had conducted the traffic stop, and a search of the vehicle by a K-9 unit turned up about  16 and a half pounds of marijuana in his possession.

Hanna said the marijuana was for medicinal purposes.

Jamestown  (CSi) The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive Saturday, May 13th.

City residents are asked to place a bag of non-perishable food items next to their mailbox on that day, which will then be picked up by local mail carriers. City Carrier JoAnne Ray says the cause will help support the local community.

Fredric Rolando, President of the National Association of Letter Carriers, says the event is in it’s 25th year.

Last year, the event collected more than 80 million pounds of food. This was then brought to local food banks and organizations.

Be sure to leave out a bag of non-perishable food items in Jamestown on May 13th for local carriers to pick up and bring to area organizations to assist with the 25th Annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive.

Jamestown Salvation Army Major, Tim Nauta says, the food drive could not come at a better time for The Salvation Army. Many families who rely on the schools to provide free meals for their kids during the school year struggle to make ends meet in the summer time.

He says, “We often see the need increase during the summer, but the donations decrease so this is a great help to us.”

Major Nauta asks that people make sure any food they donate has not expired. If the expiration date has long passed, food shelves have to throw it away.

NOME, N.D. (AP) — A white supremacist who bought a building in Nome only to see it destroyed by an intentionally set fire says he’s sold back the property in the small southeastern North Dakota town.

Craig Cobb says he’s taken back the $8,000 he paid for an old church and given the property back to the previous owner.

He’s also rescinding a reward he previously offered for information about who set the building on fire in March.

Authorities have said the fire was arson. There have been no arrests.

Cobb is serving four years of probation for terrorizing residents of Leith in 2013. He lives in Sherwood.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — An appeals court has upheld the conviction of a man accused of sex trafficking in the Williston area.

A federal jury in 2015 found Keith Graves guilty on five counts of sex trafficking by force or coercion, and distribution of methamphetamine. It was one of the first high-profile human trafficking cases in the North Dakota oil patch.

The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected Graves’ notion that he the government didn’t give him evidence in a timely manner and in a form that allowed him to adequately prepare for proceedings. Graves represented himself at trial.

Graves was one of the main subjects in “The Overnighters,” which won an award at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. It followed a pastor who opened his church to homeless oil workers.

MANDAN, N.D. (AP) — A town hall meeting featuring U.S. Rep. Kevin Cramer turned rowdy with two men getting ejected in Mandan.

Many in the crowd of about 80 jeered Cramer on Thursday about his vote to repeal and replace major parts of the Affordable Care Act.

A man approached Cramer, accusing the Republican and other House members who voted for the bill as undermining health care law. The man took dollar bills from his wallet and tried to shove them into Cramer’s suit pocket, saying they could help pay the medical expenses of a young child whose mother had just spoken.

A Cramer supporter grabbed the man by the throat to keep him from touching the congressman. Both men were ejected, but The Bismarck Tribune reports police made no arrests.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A federal judge in North Dakota has cleared the way to try the 10 defendants who have already been arraigned in a multimillion-dollar Jamaican lottery scam case instead of waiting for the other five suspects to be taken into U.S. custody.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Clare Hochhalter asked U.S. District Judge Dan Hovland to allow the government to proceed to trial without waiting for the remaining defendants to be caught or extradited from Jamaica, saying the mostly elderly victims deserve justice in a case that has already dragged on for more than five years.

Hovland approved the request Wednesday, saying it is “in the best interest of the public and all of the defendants.”

A trial date hasn’t been set.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota Department of Health is monitoring the cleanup of a tank leak that spilled more than 25,000 gallons of crude oil in McKenzie County.

The department said Thursday it was notified of the spill that happened at a transmission pipeline distribution point operated by Crestwood Midstream. The spill was discovered April 28 about 11 miles southeast of Keene and was reported to the National Response Center and the North Dakota Industrial Commission.

Officials say the spilled oil was released from the primary tank and contained within the secondary containment.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota Powerball player has claimed a prize worth $150,000.

The North Dakota Lottery says the winner from New Town claimed the prize Thursday. The winner wants to remain anonymous, but the lottery says she played her favorite set of numbers which she has played for years.

The ticket matched four white balls plus the Powerball in Saturday night’s drawing to win the $50,000 third prize. The ticketholder had purchased an option that tripled the amount.

The Powerball jackpot has grown to $184 million for Saturday night’s drawing.

WASHBURN, N.D. (AP) — Residents of a central North Dakota city are celebrating the expansion of a local wildlife management area and flood control measures that come with it.

A flood control project is expected to be part of the expansion of the Painted Woods Wildlife Management Area in Washburn. The flood-control element is what brought local officials, farmers and ranchers out in support a little over a year ago.

Backed-up water flowing into Painted Woods Lake has been flooding adjacent farmland for about six to eight years. The flooding is due to years of silt buildup and 10- to 12-foot-tall cattails restricting drainage into the lake.

McLean County has tried to mitigate damage to neighboring lands. The acres of land were purchased by the county, and several state and wildlife advocacy group partners to build drainage infrastructure.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — State wildlife officials have stocked a fresh supply of trout in almost 40 North Dakota fisheries.

Jerry Weigel with the state Game and Fish Department says the effort puts catchable fish in waters that are more accessible to young people, older adults and disabled anglers. Many of the fisheries have piers.

Weigel says trout bite aggressively in the spring and are easier for kids to catch.

More than 20,000 11-inch rainbow trout were stocked, along with 800 1- to 2-pound cutthroat trout.

WNBA-PRESEASON POLL

Lynx picked to win WNBA title, Delle Donne MVP favorite

NEW YORK (AP) — The Minnesota Lynx are the favorite to win the WNBA championship in a survey of the league’s 12 general managers.

Washington’s Elena Delle Donne, who was traded to the Mystics from the Chicago Sky during the offseason, is the top choice to win the league’s Most Valuable Player.

Five of the league’s 12 general managers picked the Lynx to win their fourth title since 2011. The Los Angeles Sparks defeated the Lynx in the finals last season. Three GMs picked the Sparks to repeat.

The Mystics, largely thanks to the addition of Delle Donne, were selected as the league’s most improved team. San Antonio’s Kelsey Plum, who was the league’s No. 1 overall draft pick, is the Rookie of the Year favorite.

The WNBA begins its season on Saturday.

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) — The acting director of the FBI is undercutting how the White House explains President Donald Trump’s firing of James Comey. Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe tells Congress that the bureau’s investigation into Russian election meddling is “highly significant,” though the White House says it’s “one of the smallest things” the FBI is dealing with. McCabe also disputes the White House assertion that rank-and-file agents no longer backed Comey.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is contradicting previous White House explanations for the firing of James Comey as FBI director. Trump says in an interview with NBC News that he had planned to fire Comey all along, regardless of the recommendations of top Justice Department officials. He derided Comey as a “showboat” and “grandstander” and said Comey had left the FBI in “virtual turmoil.” On Capitol Hill, acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe said Comey was widely respected at the bureau.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Attorney General Jeff Sessions is directing the nation’s federal prosecutors to pursue the most serious charges possible against the vast majority of suspects. It’s a reversal of Obama-era policies and sure to send more people to prison and for longer terms by triggering mandatory minimum sentences. Sessions contends a spike in violence in some cities and the opioid epidemic merit a return to tougher tactics.

FATIMA, Portugal (AP) — Pope Francis and pilgrims from around the world are flocking to a Catholic shrine town in Portugal to honor two poor, illiterate shepherd children whose visions of the Virgin Mary 100 years ago marked one of the most important events of the 20th-century Catholic Church. Francis arrives in Fatima Friday to celebrate the centenary of the apparitions and canonize the children. At first doubted, the children’s story gained believers and was eventually accepted as authentic by the church in 1930.

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) — Aid officials say Jordan has sent hundreds of refugees back to southern Syria in the first four months of 2017, a spike in a practice that a rights group says is a violation of international law. Deportees interviewed by The Associated Press say women and children are among those sent back, some expelled without apparent reason or due process. A Jordanian official confirms deportations are taking place, but says refugees are only deported for security reasons.
