Jamestown  (CSi)  The Jamestown Board of Adjustments will meet Thursday May 18, 2017 at 8-a.m. in the City Hall conference room.

Members will address variance requests for property at 1514 Island Park Drive.

At the May 1, 2017 City Council meeting the Council heard from developer Greg Spenningsby, concerning more transparency in issuing zoning variances in the city and allow forming a building committee, to discuss issues city-wide, in notifications.

He said the discussion stems from a building being constructed in the Island Park development concerning building a garage on a lot.

MANDAN, N.D. (AP) — Authorities are looking for a missing Mandan man whose empty boat was found near a Missouri River boat ramp.

The man was reported missing Wednesday evening and his idling boat was found Thursday near the Fort Rice ramp. Morton County sheriff’s officials fear the man may have drowned.

The sheriff’s department is getting some help from state game and fish wardens and the Highway Patrol in its search by land, air and water.

MANDAN, N.D. (AP) — Toxicology test results show a California man found dead along the shore of the Cannonball River in April had alcohol in his system, but no drugs.

Authorities say 35-year-old Damjan Nedelkovski of Glendale, California was known to be at camps protesting the Dakota Access pipeline. Morton County sheriff’s officials said Friday cell phone records show no activity from Nedelkovski since late October when friends and family had last contact with him.

Authorities say no cell phone was found in his personal belongings that were removed from his rental car, which was found abandoned in the Oceti protest camp. The victim has been positively identified by dental records and fingerprints. Authorities say arrangements are still being made to have his body transported to his family in the Republic of Macedonia.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A group of Fargo citizens has dropped an effort to recall a city commissioner for his views on refugee resettlement.

The group has been gathering signatures since March in an effort to oust Dave Piepkorn, who has repeatedly questioned the amount of taxpayer money spent on the program and its impact on crime.

Recall spokesman Andrew Lenzmeier says the group did not feel confident there were enough valid signatures. The committee needed about 3,500 names.

Lenzmeier says the group was also upset by Piepkorn’s vow to file a Freedom Of Information Act request to obtain the names of everyone who signed the petitions.

Piepkorn says he is “very pleased” he doesn’t have to face a recall election. His seat is up for re-election in June 2018.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — The name of a fallen Fargo police officer will be among those added to the National Law Enforcement Memorial Monday in Washington.

Officer Jason Moszer was killed in the line of duty last year after he responded to a domestic dispute that resulted in a shootout.

Dozens of family members, fellow officers and others from the Fargo-Moorhead area are making the trip to Washington this weekend. Memorial fund organizers are holding a candlelight vigil on Saturday, a gathering that generally draws tens of thousands of people.

The service on Monday takes place on the front lawn of the Capitol. Moszer’s name and those of 142 other officers killed last year will be read and inscribed on one of the two marble walls.

BEULAH, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota farmer and his wife recently welcomed a calf that is seemingly healthy, but has an extra set of hind legs hanging off its neck.

State Veterinarian Susan Keller tells The Bismarck Tribune that the calf could’ve been born with one of two disorders, polydactyly or polymelia. With polymelia the extra limbs are often smaller or shrunken. Polydactyly is the result of genetic combinations involving recessive genes.

Keller says this type of defect is an “important topic that producers should not be afraid to report to their veterinarian and to all breed associations.”

The calf was born Wednesday at Gerald Skalsky’s ranch south of Beulah. Skalsky says the condition isn’t fatal and he plans to have the extra limbs surgically removed so it doesn’t get caught in a fence.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The number of licenses being issued for North Dakota’s fall deer hunt is increasing for a second straight year, after seven years of declines from a record high.

The 54,500 licenses approved by the Game and Fish Department are 26 percent higher than the recent low in 2015.

State Wildlife Chief Jeb Williams says the rise corresponds with the rebounding of the state’s deer population from several harsh winters and a recent oil boom.

But habitat loss is still a concern. Williams says it’s likely the days of licenses in excess of 100,000 are over as long as prime grassland remains converted to crop production.

The 2017 deer gun season opens at noon Nov. 10 and runs through Nov. 26. The deadline to apply for a license is June 7.

In world and national news….

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House is denying that President Donald Trump asked then-FBI director James Comey for his loyalty during a White House dinner in January. Press secretary Sean Spicer is refuting that account during his daily briefing. He says the president wants “loyalty to this country and to the rule of law.” An associate of the fired FBI director confirmed Friday that Trump asked for Comey’s loyalty during the private dinner.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Lawyers for President Donald Trump say a review of his last 10 years of tax returns do not reflect “any income of any type from Russian sources,” with some exceptions. The release of a letter from Trump’s lawyers is the latest attempt by the president to tamp down concerns about Russian ties amid an ongoing investigation of his campaign’s associates.

LONDON (AP) — A large cyberattack has crippled computer systems at hospitals across Britain. Appointments were canceled Friday, phone lines were down and patients were turned away. Britain’s National Health Service said hospitals were hit by an apparent “ransomware” attack, but there was no immediate evidence that patient data had been accessed. Computers in Spain were also apparently attacked, and Spain contacted 100 key firms to warn them about the attack.

HOUSTON (AP) — Before the wall, there was the fence. And the U.S. is still paying for it. As President Donald Trump tries to persuade a skeptical Congress to fund his proposed multibillion-dollar wall on the Mexican border, government lawyers are still settling claims with Texas landowners over a border fence approved more than a decade ago. Three new settlements were completed just last month.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former first lady Michelle Obama is criticizing a Trump administration decision to delay federal rules aimed at making school lunches healthier. She tells an annual health conference in Washington that more nutritious school lunches are important since millions of kids get most of their calories from federally subsidized school breakfasts and lunches.
