Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown Board of Adjustments will meet Thursday May 18, 2017 at 8-a.m. in the City Hall conference room.
Members will address variance requests for property at 1514 Island Park Drive.
At the May 1, 2017 City Council meeting the Council heard from developer Greg Spenningsby, concerning more transparency in issuing zoning variances in the city and allow forming a building committee, to discuss issues city-wide, in notifications.
He said the discussion stems from a building being constructed in the Island Park development concerning building a garage on a lot.
Jamestown (CSi) The Stutsman County Commission and Jamestown Area Chamber of Commerce are both drafting letters in cooperation with Stutsman County Emergency Manager, Jerry Bergquiest, to send to the North Dakota Public Service Commission concerning the April 21. 2017 Century Link fiber linethat was cut disrupting phone service between Jamestown and Fargo.
The service disrupted local and long distance phone services along with 9-1-1 calls.
Bergquist says businesses had concerns from the cut that day.
Agricover’s Joan Morris says, the business estimated tens ofthousand of dollars in losses stemming from the four hour service disruption that day.
Other businesses lost the use of credit card machines, for customers that day as well.
The Stutsman County Commission will further discuss the letter at Tuesday’s 4-p.m., meeting.
Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown Area Grief Support Team is hosting a Community Service of Remembrance on Monday, May 15 at 7:00 p.m. at Ave Maria Village, 501 19th Street NE in Jamestown. Your future will become open to new experiences only to the extent that you embrace the past.” Many people who are grieving the loss of a loved one feel very alone in their grief. The Jamestown Area Grief Support Team is committed to offering support and companioning to those who are grieving. Team members endeavor to provide a listening ear and a variety of ways for individuals to share their feelings about their loss.

39 year old Oscar Castro, was westbbound on Highway 13. A tractor driven by 63 year old Mark Wyum, of Rutland was traveling from a field east of Gwinner to another field west.
Castro rear-ended the disc plow, suffering fatal head injuries. He died at the scene. Wyum was not injured in the crash. The tractor and plow had the lighting to legally operate on a highway at night, which were properly functioning at the time of the crash.
The Highway Patrol continues with the investigation.

The driver was a Jordan Ohman, 26 years of age of Arvilla ND.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — After a busy year for the military and law enforcement alike, members the Bismarck community gathered at the State Capitol to show their appreciation for those who serve.
Morton County Sheriff Kyle Kirchmeier said after the events of this past year, Saturday’s rally and what it represented meant a lot to law enforcement and emergency services.
Pictures were handed out as tokens of appreciation for the many hours spent on the job during the tumultuous Dakota Access pipeline protests.
The rally kicked off National Police Week, which opened Sunday. On Tuesday and Wednesday night, two floors of the Capitol will be lit with blue lights in honor of North Dakota law enforcement.
Washington DC. (KVRR) — It is a time to respect, honor and remember.
National Police Week events are underway in Washington, D.C. to honor fallen law enforcement heroes, including Officer Jason Moszer of Fargo.
KVRR reports Moszer’s name was among the 394 fallen United States law enforcement officers honored at the 29th Annual Candlelight Vigil.
Thousands of people filled the National Mall Saturday evening.
Chief Dave Todd of the Fargo Police Department was one of many Red River Valley officers who traveled to the nation’s capitol in honor of Jason Moszer.
“It’s our officer,” Todd said. “So to see our officer in a place that’s so special, it’s emotional. You’re proud of your officer, you miss your officer, we’ve been moving through the grief for the last year or so. We’re looking forward to not just grieving, but also remembering in a positive way the special guy that he was. I think this helps us do that, we remember the good things. He’ll always be a part of the Fargo Police Department, his family will always be a part of our family and this brings that all together.”
President John F. Kennedy declared the first Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15, 1962, as a tribute to peace officers and in honor of peace officers who, through their courageous deeds, lost their lives or became disabled in the line of duty. This day has been observed in our country annually ever since.
On this day, and every day, it is fitting to honor those peace officers who gave their lives to protect ours, and to thank the law enforcement officers who serve for their dedication and service to our communities.
In accordance with Flag Code section 7(m), the United States flag is to be displayed at half-staff for the entire day in honor of Peace Officers Memorial Day, Monday, May 15, 2017. By a joint resolution approved October 1, 1962, as amended (76 Stat. 676), and by Public Law 103-322, as amended (36 U.S.C. 136-137), the President has been authorized and requested to designate May 15 of each year as “Peace Officers Memorial Day” and the week in which it falls as “Police Week.”
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Agents from North Dakota’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation have been called in to help verify the validity of signatures on a petition to recall Bismarck Mayor Mike Seminary.
City spokeswoman Gloria David says in a statement that officials “have encountered discrepancies with the petitions that may involve fraudulent activity.” She says the city does not have the capability to investigate these discrepancies.
The petition came after critics accused the mayor of welcoming Dakota Access pipeline protesters to Bismarck.
The petition, which originally had about 2,500 names on it, needs 1,898 valid signatures to trigger a recall election.
Cody Schuh, one of the petition circulators, says he finds it a bit surprising that law enforcement is involved but confirmed a BCI agent questioned him about the petition.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Opposition to the four-state Dakota Access oil pipeline has boosted efforts to persuade banks to stop supporting projects that might harm the environment or tread on indigenous rights.
But calling the divest movement a success might be a stretch. It doesn’t appear to be keeping energy companies from getting financing, nor does it seem to concern the lending industry.
Pipeline opponents see victory in the fact that they’ve made financial institutions more aware of indigenous rights. They’re intent on keeping up the fight on projects such as Keystone XL.
Vanessa Green with the DivestInvest initiative says what once was an environmental movement now includes social justice and indigenous rights.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) — State monitoring of the Ward County Jail will continue indefinitely in light of a finding that jail staff made two significant errors in health services in recent weeks.
The North Dakota Department of Corrections investigated the Ward County Jail after inmate Dustin Irwin died in 2014 after being transferred. A full-time monitor was put at the jail.
Sheriff Bob Barnard tells the Minot Daily News he’s disappointed the monitoring will continue. He says he felt jail standards were being met, and he says the incidents cited as reasons for the continued monitoring are being mischaracterized.
Corrections Director Leann Bertsch says in one of those incidents, a jail staff member failed to provide inmates with medication.
Commissioners are anxious to end the monitoring, which costs the county about $7,500 monthly.
STANLEY, N.D. (AP) — A redesigned North Dakota county courthouse is modernizing court and criminal justice functions while preserving the beauty of a historic building.
The Justice Center in Mountrail County opened in January with the exception of the jail that is still waiting for certification. Construction began on July 14, 2015, exactly 100 years after the dedication of the original courthouse.
The Justice Center now houses the jail, dispatch center and law enforcement center.
Chief Deputy Corey Bristol says evidence that was once stored in an old vault now has its own room with improved security and storage conditions. He says the dispatch center also has new equipment.
The expansion also included the installation of new technology that allows video visitation within the jail and three courtrooms.

UNDATED (AP) — The Yankees say closer Aroldis Chapman will miss at least a month due to rotator cuff inflammation in his left shoulder. Chapman underwent an MRI Saturday after allowing a run while recording just two outs in the ninth inning of Friday’s loss to Houston. He told manager Joe Girardi that he was fine after he left the game, but he admitted to a trainer that his shoulder was sore.
Former big league umpire Steve Palermo has died at age 67 after being in poor health. Palermo broke into the majors late in 1976 and was still calling balls and strikes until 1991, when he was shot trying to break up a robbery in Dallas. SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea says the missile it launched over the weekend was a new type of “medium long-range” ballistic rocket that can carry a heavy nuclear warhead. Its propaganda must be considered with wariness, but if confirmed, the claim would mark another big step forward in the country’s escalating efforts to field a nuclear-tipped missile capable of reaching the U.S. mainland. The launch is an immediate challenge to South Korea’s new leader.
TOKYO (AP) — The worldwide “ransomware” cyberattack spread to thousands of more computers on Monday as people rebooted their computers at work, disrupting business, schools, hospitals and daily life, though no new large-scale breakdowns were reported. The full extent of the damage from the cyberattack felt in 150 countries is unclear and could worsen if more malicious variations of the online extortion scheme appear.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is getting a lot of unsolicited advice about where to turn for a replacement for James Comey to run the FBI. Several members of Congress say they think the appointment should be as non-political as possible. They say Trump shouldn’t turn to a person who already holds political office. Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina says “it’s now time to pick somebody who comes from within the ranks” of law enforcement.
SEATTLE (AP) — For the second time in a week, government lawyers on Monday will try to persuade a federal appeals court to reinstate President Donald Trump’s revised travel ban. And once again, they can expect plenty of questions about whether the ban was designed to discriminate against Muslims. A three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has scheduled arguments in Seattle over Hawaii’s lawsuit challenging the travel ban.
UNDATED (AP) — Thousands of school-age offenders are treated annually for sexual aggression in the United States. The Associated Press sought to understand why they assault. Experts say age is an important factor when it comes to motivation. Feelings of control or entitlement might spur a high school student. A middle schooler could act on impulse and opportunity. Elementary students might not know they’re violating boundaries. The good news is that therapy and a supportive family can speed recovery.
