28 year old Justin Hatten, of Milaca, Minnesota was allegedly driving a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado that had been stolen in Hope, North Dakota.

A Highway Patrol trooper attempted to stop the eastbound vehicle on Interstate 94 at Exit 260 east  of Jamestown. Hatten crossed the median and attempted to exit on the westbound ramp but lost control of the vehicle and abandoned it in a road ditch before fleeing on foot into nearby trees.

Hatten remains in custody at the Stutsman County Correctional Center charged with fleeing law enforcement officers and the unauthorized use of a vehicle.

The Highway Patrol was assisted by local law enforcement in a search of the area with Hatten taken into custody at 11 p.m. Saturday.

Jamestown  (CSi)  The North Dakota Highway Patrol investigated two crashes that occurred Friday and Saturday near Jamestown

On Friday evening just before 8-p.m., 50 year old Dulaga Mustafic,  of Fargo was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Express east on Interstate 94 east of exit 258 in Jamestown. Mustafic lost control of the vehicle, which went into the ditch and rolled down an embankment.

Assisting at the scene were, the Jamestown Police Department and Stutsman County Sheriff’s Office.

Just after 2-p.m., Saturday, the Highway Patrol investigated a crash involving a 2003 Kenworth pulling a reefer trailer, and a 2004 Mercury Sable, on I 94 14 miles west of Jamestown.

The report says the Mercury operated by 24 year old Osman Hirsi of Bismarck,  was traveling eastbound on I 94 in the right lane.  The Kenworth driven by 29 year old  Ben Christen of Albany, Minnesota was also eastbound and approached the Mercury from the rear.  Christen  became distracted and did not observe the Mercury in front of him.

Just prior to the collision, Hirsi attempted to swerve to the right to avoid the Kenworth which then rear ended the Mercury.  After the collision, the Kenworth jackknifed and entered the median where it came to rest on its passenger side facing west.

The Mercury came to rest in the eastbound lane facing east. The female passenger of the Mercury 23 year old, Ogbad Jama was transported to Jamestown Regional Medical Center by Medina Ambulance Service where she was treated and released. The driver of the Mercury was not hurt.

The occupants of the Kenworth, Christen and a five year old male from Albany were transported to Jamestown Regional Medical Center where they were treated and released.

All occupants were wearing seat belts.

Also assisting at the scene was the Stutsman County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash remains under investigation.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Law enforcement officials who have spent a dozen years working to dismantle a violent Mexican drug cartel credit a volunteer North Dakota agent for much of their success.

The case known as Operation Speed Racer resulted in more than 70 convictions. The case is mostly closed, except for an alleged hit man whose case was recently unsealed in federal court.

Former West Fargo detective Brad Berg began working on the case in 2005 when he was assigned to a Drug Enforcement Administration task force. He helped investigate a drug killing in the Red River Valley that was connected to the Arelleno Felix cartel in Tijuana, Mexico.

The now-retired Berg got into law enforcement after he gave up his law practice and did almost all of his detective work for free.

The Bismarck Tribune reports Legacy High School admitted 800 students in its first year. The $55.5 million school is in Bismarck.

Student body president Cody Knowlen says being the school’s first class was a difficult and rewarding process.

Principal Tom Schmidt says the school’s 233 graduating seniors have been essential in starting up the school. Schmidt says the graduating class has immensely grown since freshman year. The class will be forever commemorated in a glass display in the school.

Legacy High School’s commencement ceremony is scheduled for May 28.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Bismarck school officials are trying to determine how the district accumulated $23,000 in unpaid student lunches over 10 years.

Bismarck School Board President Matt Sagsveen told The Bismarck Tribune the matter will be discussed at a meeting Monday. Sagsveen says what happened “raises concerns” and he wants to figure out how to take care of it.

District Superintendent Tamara Uselman says many of the accounts with a negative balance are from former students and it’s likely that what’s owed will be paid for by the district’s general fund.

The school district adopted a new policy in November to notify parents by text and email when they owe money. Parents will also be warned that their debt could be forwarded to a collection agency if it’s unpaid.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota teacher recently staged an Olympics for invertebrates that aims to get students involved in science, math and engineering. The Bismarck Tribune reports that the students form teams for the Olympics. They research different countries and cultures, which they presented at the Opening Ceremonies.

Throughout the school year Guenther’s students worked on developing prototypes for insects. The purpose was to help students understand a trial and error process

The students trained bugs to compete in various and 400- and 200-millimeter races.

Guenther says family members were encouraged to attend the games.

BEULAH, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota bridge built in the 1980s will be used for a recreation complex and green space. The Bismarck Tribune reports the iron pedestrian bridge in Beulah was removed during a highway construction project last year.

The bridge will be used to cover a drainage valley that runs out of the north hills near the city’s outdoor swimming pool at the new Beulah Wellness Center.

DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) — State health officials are continuing to monitor the cleanup of about 500 gallons (1,900 liters) of diesel fuel that spilled into Devils Lake in northeast North Dakota.Officials say the spill happened Tuesday at the Army National Guard’s Camp Grafton facility when a diesel fuel dispenser malfunctioned.

The Health Department says about 1,300 gallons (4,900 liters) of fuel was contained at the site, but about 500 gallons migrated through the storm sewer system into the lake.

Assessments conducted Thursday showed no areas of diesel fuel or sheen on the lake. Health officials say it’s likely that the fuel previously on the lake has broken up and dissipated.

Officials say they’ll continue to monitor it.

There have been no reports of harm to fish or wildlife.

NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION PLAYOFFS

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Cavaliers’ NBA record-tying playoff winning streak is over. The Boston Celtics put a stop to it on Sunday with an improbable victory just hours after announcing their top player is done for the season.

The Cavaliers had won 13 straight postseason contests until Avery Bradley nailed a 3-pointer with less than one second left to give the Celtics a 111-108 triumph at Cleveland. The shot bounced on the rim four times before getting the Celtics within two games to one in the Eastern Conference finals. Bradley’s bucket also capped a gritty comeback after Boston fell behind by 21 in the third quarter.

The Celtics did it without Isaiah Thomas, who has been ruled out for the remainder of the postseason with a hip injury.

NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE PLAYOFFS

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Penguins scored just six goals in splitting the first two games of the NHL’s Eastern Conference finals. They topped that on Sunday afternoon alone to get within one victory of their second straight trip to the Stanley Cup final.

Bryan Rust and Scott Wilson scored 2:13 apart to give the Pens a 4-0 lead late in the first period of a 7-0 pounding of the Ottawa Senators.

The Senators will try to stave off elimination when they host Game 6 on Tuesday.

NASCAR-ALL STAR RACE

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) — The All-Star race showed Kyle Larson is the likely favorite for the Coca-Cola 600.

It also showed that the best car doesn’t always win, and the winner will likely be aided by a heavy dose of clean air. Translation? NASCAR’s longest race could be an epic snoozer. That’s saying a lot after Martin Truex Junior last year led all but eight of the 400 laps.

The annual All-Star race gave little hope of the 600 rising to some epic event that will be talked about for years. At Charlotte Motor Speedway, the leader uses the clean air in front of him to drive away from the field. Passing is difficult at the front.

The $1 million prize was going to one of 10 drivers who won a 10-lap sprint to the finish. So whichever driver took the lead on the restart would churn through that clean air all the way to victory lane.

Larson didn’t get a shot because of the slow stop. The win instead went to Kyle Busch, his first in a Cup car at Charlotte. It was his first in the All-Star race, and ended more than a decade of frustration at the local track.

INDY 500-BOURDAIS CRASH

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — James Davison will replace Sebastien Bourdais (bohr-DAY’) in next Sunday’s Indianapolis 500.

Bourdais crashed during qualifying Saturday, leaving the four-time Champ Car season champion with multiple fractures in his pelvis and a fractured right hip. The French driver had pelvic surgery and is recovering in a hospital.

Dale Coyne’s team says Bourdais will likely miss the rest of the season. It’s unclear if Davison will remain in the car beyond next Sunday’s race.

Scott Dixon has grabbed the pole for the Indy 500 with a four-lap average of 232.164 mph in Sunday’s qualifying.

Two-time Formula One champion Fernando Alonso will start fifth in his Indianapolis 500 debut next weekend.

PGA-AT&T BYRON NELSON

IRVING, Texas (AP) — They needed to play extra golf at the AT&T Byron Nelson before Billy Horschel came away with the title.

Horschel sank a par putt on the first playoff hole after Jason Day pulled his 4-foot putt left and past the hole. Horschel fired a 1-under 69 on Sunday, including a 60-foot birdie putt on 14.

Day finished with a 68 for a 12-under total.

PGA TOUR CHAMPIONS

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Bernhard Langer (LAHN’-gur) pulled away from the other contenders and captured the Regions Tradition in Birmingham to match Jack Nicklaus’ record of eight major titles on the PGA Tour Champions circuit.

Langer closed with an 8-under 64 for a 20-under total. The 59-year-old German wiped out a six-stroke deficit over the weekend and entered the final round two strokes behind Fred Funk.

Langer won the event by five shots over Scott McCarron and Scott Parel after winning last year’s Tradition by six strokes.

LPGA-KINGSMILL CHAMPIONSHIP

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (AP) — Lexi Thompson completed a wire-to-wire victory in the LPGA’s Kingsmill Championship by closing with a 6-under 65.

Thompson was 20 under in breaking the tournament record for best total score in relation to par, topping Annika Soranstam’s 19 under in 2008.

Runner-up In Gee Chun shot a bogey-free 67 to finish five shots back.

TENNIS-DJOKOVIC-AGASSI

ROME (AP) — Novak Djokovic (NOH’-vak JOH’-kuh-vich) is joining forces with Andre Agassi in an effort to return to No. 1.

The second-ranked Djokovic split with his longtime coach, Marian Vajda, and two other team members at the start of the month.

ICE HOCKEY WORLDS

COLOGNE, Germany (AP) — Canada’s bid for a third straight ice hockey world championship fell just short as Sweden earned a 2-1, shootout victory in the title game at Cologne, Germany.

Nicklas Backstrom and Oliver Ekman Larsson scored in the shootout, while goaltender Henrik Lundqvist stopped each of Canada’s four attempts. Lundqvist also made 42 saves during the game, while Canadian netminder Calvin Pickard stopped 41 shots as the two teams skated to a 1-1 tie through overtime.

In world and national news…

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — President Donald Trump says in Israel that there’s a “great feeling for peace throughout the Middle East.” Trump was meeting with Israeli President Reuven Rivlin shortly after his arrival in Jerusalem. Rivlin says “we are praying for peace and pushing for peace.”

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) — President Donald Trump made little if any public mention in Saudi Arabia of its treatment of women and political opponents during his two-day visit. Trump praised the kingdom for its magnificence and grandeur, and indicated there would be no lectures on its poor human rights record. That’s raising concerns that Trump is setting aside human rights as a principal foreign policy.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Members of key congressional committees are pledging a full public airing as to why former FBI director James Comey was ousted. That comes amid an intensifying investigation into Russia’s interference with the U.S. election that appears to be reaching close to President Donald Trump and his inner circle. In Sunday show appearances, both Republican and Democratic lawmakers say they will press Comey as to whether he ever felt Trump tried to interfere with his FBI work.

FOREST GROVE, Ore. (AP) — An Associated Press survey of states found that only 18 required training for teachers, school administrators or students focused on peer-on-peer sexual assaults. That leaves many educators to struggle with how to protect victims and manage the risk of offenders. To fill the void, technology companies have joined school districts, students and parents in trying novel approaches to curtail such attacks. Schools also have been teaching students how to safely intervene if they see sexual violence.

TOKYO (AP) — North Korea says it is ready to deploy and start mass-producing a new midrange missile that it says is its answer to U.S. President Donald Trump’s polices. The missile tested on Sunday is capable of reaching Japan and several major U.S. military bases there. North Korea claims the launch confirmed the missile’s combat readiness. Trump, traveling in Saudi Arabia, had no immediate public comment.
