FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Authorities say defective boiler may have caused an apparent carbon monoxide leak at a Fargo hotel that sent a child to the hospital and sickened others.
The 9-year-old girl was sickened in the pool area Monday at the La Quinta Inn and Suites. Police say at least 10 others also felt sick and sought treatment on their own.
Fire officials say the level of carbon monoxide in the pool area was 300 parts per million. Firefighter usually wear protective masks when the level reaches 100 parts per million.
Nearby rooms at La Quinta were unoccupied, so no evacuation was necessary.
GLADSTONE, N.D. (AP) — Seventy horses and 20 cattle have been returned at least temporarily to a Gladstone rancher accused of abusing and neglecting them.
The Stark County Sheriff’s Office began to seize the animals last week on a judge’s order. But The Bismarck Tribune reports that another judge reversed the order.
The Stark County State’s Attorney’s Office sued Gary Dassinger last month after a local veterinarian found some of Dassinger’s animals to be in poor shape. Two horses were severely crippled and were euthanized.
Dassinger says health problems make it difficult for him to care for the animals, and he says he hired the “wrong ranch hand.”
Dassinger is to appear in court June 7 on felony animal cruelty charges. He says he’ll fight the charges.

Feltman is the pastor at St. John the Baptist’s Catholic Church in Wyndmere and St. Arnold’s Catholic Church in Milnor. A home telephone listing for him was not available.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A film festival on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation aims to bolster the anti-pipeline movement that blossomed there last year.
Another goal of the inaugural Standing Rock Nation Film and Music Festival Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the tribal casino near Fort Yates is to foster connections between the Native American community and the film industry.
Festival producer Tricia van Klaveren says the event will showcase the talent of Native filmmakers and musicians, feature films about American Indians and provide a venue for those who opposed the $3.8 billion Dakota Access oil pipeline to reminisce.
The casino’s capacity is limited to 1,000 people, but many events and panels will be live-streamed online. Admission is free, though donations are encouraged.

SPORTSWRITER-INDY 500 TWEET
DENVER (AP) — A veteran sports writer is no longer working with The Denver Post after he posted on Twitter that he was “uncomfortable with a Japanese driver winning the Indianapolis 500 during Memorial Day weekend.”
Terry Frei sent the tweet after Takuma Sato on Sunday became the first Japanese driver to win the race.
Frei sent a follow-up tweet apologizing to Sato and the paper for his comment, saying he “fouled up.” He noted his tweet occurred during an emotional time when he was honoring his late father, who was a World War II pilot in the fight against Japan.
He declined to comment further Monday.
The Denver Post apologized on its website, saying that Frei’s tweet was disrespectful and unacceptable. It said Frei was no longer employed and declined further comment.

Woods says he didn’t realize the mix of medications affected him that strongly.

NHL-ALL-STAR WEEKEND
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Commissioner Gary Bettman said Tampa will host the 2018 All-Star weekend, the surest sign yet that the NHL will actually bypass the Olympics.
The Lightning had been rumored to host the event, which will take place Jan. 27-28 at Amalie Arena, but the Olympics remained the elephant in the room. The league has said since early April that it won’t be sending players to Pyeongchang and would be making its 2017-18 schedule as normal, but some held out hope.
The previous time the NHL held an All-Star weekend and sent players to the Olympics was 1998, the first of five trips to the Games.
Bettman also announced that the Washington Capitals and Toronto Maple Leafs’ previously-reported outdoor game at the Naval Academy will be the start of a series of outdoor games at U.S. service academies.
TENNIS…
PARIS (AP) — Rafael Nadal’s search for an unprecedented 10th title at the French Open got off to a winning start as he beat Benoit Paire of France in straight sets. The fourth-seeded Nadal played some brilliant shots but had to survive a minor scare in the second set on his way to a 6-1, 6-4, 6-1 victory. The Spaniard took the final set in 31 minutes.
On the court where he completed his career grand slam, Novak Djokovic (NOH’-vak JOH’-kuh-vich) has shown no sign of the crisis of confidence that affected his game since he won the French Open last year. With his new coach, Andre Agassi (AG’-uh-see), watching from the stands, the second-seeded Serb defeated Marcel Granollers to reach the second round of the clay-court event.
Defending champion Garbine Muguruza of Spain is through to the second round with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Italian Francesca Schiavone. Schiavone, the 2010 champion, showed her usual fighting spirit and saved three match points before going down when she sent a forehand volley wide.
Two of the four seeded U.S. women have lost their first-round matches. No. 19 CoCo Vandeweghe was beaten by Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia 6-1, 6-4, while No. 25 Lauren Davis was eliminated by Carina Witthoeft of Germany 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. They joined the top American man, 14th-seeded Jack Sock, on the way out.
RUSSIA-DOPING
MOSCOW (AP) — Race-walker Pyotr Trofimov has been given a four-year doping ban, becoming the latest in a string of Russians in the discipline to face punishment.
Track and field’s governing body, the IAAF, says the case was based on evidence from Trofimov’s biological passport, which tracks changes in athletes’ blood over time for signs of drug use.
Trofimov was the Russian national champion over 20 kilometers last year and previously competed at the world championships. More than 25 Russian walkers have been given doping bans in recent years, including Olympic champions.
The Russian track federation says Trofimov’s four-year ban is backdated to November 2016 and his results from August 2009 through May 2013 have been wiped out.
