MANDAN, N.D. (AP) — Relatives of a missing fisherman have found a body while searching along the Missouri River near Mandan.

Positive identification has not been made. But family members found the body near the area where Darwin Gratz was last seen fishing.

Relatives have led searches along the shores of the Missouri. Local law enforcement has been searching by air. The 57-year-old Gratz was last seen May 11. His boat was found abandoned near the Fort Rice ramp.

An autopsy is being conducted.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Fargo police say a man who was seriously hurt after falling off the hood of a moving vehicle has died of his injuries.

Police say they were notified of the death May 29th by the Cass County coroner. Thirty-three-year-old Joshua Fonder was injured May 22 in Fargo. A 27-year-old Fargo woman was arrested in Moorhead, Minnesota in connection with the incident.

Authorities say a charge tougher than reckless endangerment is under review now that Fonder has died.

STANLEY, N.D. (AP) — The Highway Patrol has identified a Stanley man who died in a motorcycle crash in Mountrail County.

Authorities say 20-year-old Dylan McGinnity lost control on a curve on state Highway 8 shortly after midnight Friday.

The bike went in the ditch and vaulted off an approach, throwing McGinnity. The motorcycle then landed on top of him.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — Authorities say they will never know what started a large fire at a Minot recycling business, though they have some theories.

The blaze at Earth Recycling broke out about midday on May 18. It produced heavy smoke that could be seen for miles. Witnesses said the fire started near a loading ramp.

Chief Deputy State Fire Marshal Ken Sisk says he couldn’t pinpoint the exact cause due to flare-ups and safety concerns. But he says the cause could be discarded smoking materials, or a pallet of flammable household items containing a box of mirrors.

The Minot Rural Fire Department is continuing to monitor the site as the fire continues to smolder out, nearly two weeks later.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Documents provided to an online magazine indicate a private security firm hired by the developer of the disputed Dakota Access oil pipeline conducted an aggressive, multifaceted operation that included a close working relationship with public law enforcement.

The Intercept reports the documents show Energy Transfer Partners hired TigerSwan to help with security. The firm was founded by retired military special forces members. The documents show TigerSwan used military-style counter-terrorism measures against what it considered “an ideologically driven insurgency.”

The magazine reports that it obtained documents through leaks and through open records requests.

Native American advocates say the report lends credence to their belief that law enforcement favored private industry in the monthslong dispute. Law enforcement and pipeline developer Energy Transfer Partners say safety was the top priority.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao is headlining an annual unmanned aircraft conference in Fargo.

Chao is scheduled to kick off the two-day Drone Focus Conference Wednesday morning at the Fargo Civic Center. She leads the agency that oversees the Federal Aviation Administration, which regulates drone operations.

Chao is one of about 45 speakers at the Fargo conference, which will include sessions on autonomous vehicles and other technology.

U.S. Sen. John Hoeven, of North Dakota, says Chao also plans to meet with representatives from Grand Forks to learn about regional research, operations and development of unmanned aircraft.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Cool, dry weather is putting stress on crops in parts of North Dakota.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s crop report says temperatures across much of North Dakota averaged 2 to 6 degrees below normal for the week ending Sunday, and most areas received little or no rain. The exception was northwestern North Dakota, where temperatures averaged 2 to 4 degrees above normal and some parts reported a half-inch of rain.

Some emerged crops and pastures are showing signs of stress and need rain and warmer weather.

Corn planting has reached 94 percent, which is close to last year’s 95 percent but ahead of the five-year average of 86 percent. Sixty-six percent of the corn has emerged, which is behind 72 percent last year but ahead of the 54 percent average.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — Some North Dakota cities near oil patches are seeing a drop in residents as the state’s overall population continues to flourish.

Estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau on Thursday show Minot’s population of more than 48,700 in 2016 fell by nearly 800 residents from the previous year. That’s nearly 1.6 percent of the city’s population.

State census director Kevin Iverson says the estimated population is still up 19.2 percent from April 2010.

Iverson says the drop mostly is due to young, adult males moving as job and wage situations change because of slower activity in the oil fields.

Last year, Williston, Watford City and Stanley also saw population declines. North Dakota saw the most growth in and around Fargo, Bismarck and Grand Forks.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Jose Altuve had four hits and two RBIs, Mike Fiers struck out eight over six innings in his bid to retain a spot in Houston’s banged-up rotation, and the major league-leading Astros beat the Minnesota Twins 7-2 on Tuesday night for their sixth straight victory.

Alex Bregman homered and drove in two runs, providing further support for Fiers (2-2) in his best of 10 starts this season.

Fiers fell behind 2-0 in the first when Eddie Rosario drew a bases-loaded walk and Byron Buxton followed with an infield single, but Astros hacked their way back against Twins starter Jose Berrios (3-1).

Bregman hit a sacrifice fly in the third, and Berrios loaded the bases with nobody out in the fourth. He gave up only one run thanks to a double play.

But in the fifth, Altuve smashed a line drive at third baseman Ehire Adrianza, who missed with a swipe of his glove as the ball landed in left field for a two-run single and a 4-2 Houston lead.

In world and national news…

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu says Turkey will evacuate some of its embassy staff from Kabul after the building was damaged in the explosion that struck the Afghan capital. Cavusoglu called for an investigation into how the suicide car bomb was able to reach Kabul’s heavily protected diplomatic district where it detonated at a busy intersection on Wednesday. He says no one among the Turkish Embassy personnel was hurt.

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) — Forget how reckless North Korea’s pursuit of nuclear-tipped missiles may seem. As the country tests better, more advanced weapons more often, it forces Washington to weigh how it would react to a pre-emptive nuclear strike. Forcing Washington to seriously weigh that calamity is a win. And it may become a real-world possibility on President Donald Trump’s watch.

SHANGHAI (AP) — The arrest and apparent disappearances of three men investigating a Chinese company that produces Ivanka Trump-branded shoes in China prompted a call for the brand to cease working with the supplier and raised questions about whether the first family’s commercial interests would muddy U.S. leadership on human rights. The men were working with China Labor Watch to publish a report alleging low pay, excessive overtime and possible misuse of student labor.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump’s offer to world leaders to call him directly on his cellphone breaks diplomatic protocol and raises concerns about the security and secrecy of presidential communications. Trump has urged leaders of Canada and Mexico to reach him on his cellphone, according to a former and a current U.S. official with direct knowledge of the practice. The White House did not respond to questions about the practice.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump says celebrity Kathy Griffin “should be ashamed of herself” for appearing in a video holding what looked like Trump’s bloody, severed head. In a post on his Twitter account Wednesday morning, Trump said, “My children, especially my 11-year-old son, Barron, are having a hard time with this.
