DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota county is planning to begin gathering data on inmates to determine the most pressing issues for inmates with drug and/or mental health issues at its local jail.
The Devils Lake Journal reports director Rob Johnson of the Lake Region Law Enforcement Center recently addressed the Ramsey County Commission and presented several statistics, showing those issues nationwide.
Johnson says gathering data should assist the county to convince state lawmakers that there’s a drug and mental health treatment issue.

In 2014, NDDOC Director Leann Bertsch determined that the inmates and staff weren’t “safe as a result of the inaction of the Sheriff.”
Sheriff Steve Kukowski was suspended and resigned this year in exchange for three misdemeanor charges against him being dropped.
