BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Industry officials say demonstrations like the massive encampment to protest construction of the Dakota Access oil pipeline in North Dakota could become commonplace.
The opposition by American Indian tribes and others to the recently completed $3.8 billion pipeline was discussed Wednesday at an annual oil industry conference in Bismarck. A panel dissected what was learned from the nearly yearlong protest.
Craig Stevens, a spokesman for a pro-pipeline coalition, says opponents “will not rest” and industry officials should “realize these protests are going to happen.”
He says the oil industry must battle misinformation by opponents, while touting the benefits of such projects.
Troy Eid, a former U.S. attorney in Colorado who specializes in Indian law, says tribal consultation is key and something the industry must take “much more seriously.”

OJ SIMPSON-PAROLE
LOVELOCK, Nev. (AP) — Instead of a blurry No. 32, 70-year-old O.J. Simpson will be wearing an inmate uniform with No. 1027820 when the former NFL star turned actor appears before a Nevada parole board today.
Simpson’s spent more than eight years behind bars for armed robbery and assault with a weapon after trying to take back sports memorabilia in a budget hotel room in Las Vegas. Simpson was acquitted of murder in the 1995 “trial of the century” in Los Angeles.
Parole is a likely possibility with his clean prison record. Sports fans, newshounds and the curious will get to see what happens first hand.
On CSi Cable, ABC 6, NBC 11, CNN 16 , Fox News Channel 32, MSNBC 38, HLN 34 and ESPN 14 will show Simpson’s parole hearing, starting at 12 noon, CDT.
Interest in Simpson was revived last year with ESPN’s documentary “O.J.: Made in America,” and the FX miniseries, “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story”
NBA-NEWS
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Blake Griffin says it was a no-brainer for him to sign a max five-year deal to stay with the L.A. Clippers.
He says his summer wasn’t filled with meetings with other teams. Blake says he canceled those after he met with the Clippers, the only NBA team he’s played for in his seven-year career.
He says he’s “excited to be back” and he’s where he wants to start and finish his career.
Griffin, who is 28, is undoubtedly the star of the Clippers with Chris Paul gone in the trade with the Rockets that sent Pat Beverley to Los Angeles. He said he and Paul talked about his decision to want to leave the Clippers and has “no hard feelings.” He says players have to do what’s best for themselves and their families.
In other NBA news:
— Manu Ginobili appears to be putting off retirement for at least another season. The forward, who turns 40 on July 28, has tweeted that he is re-signing with San Antonio.

WOODBURY, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut officials say the wife of longtime ESPN broadcaster Chris Berman died from blunt trauma and drowning after her car hit another vehicle in May.
The Hartford Courant reports that Dr. James Gill, the chief state medical examiner, has ruled 67-year-old Katherine Ann Berman’s death an accident.
Her car struck the rear of an SUV, veered down an embankment and into water. The driver of the SUV, an elderly man who wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, also died. The case remains under investigation.
SOCCER-GOLD CUP
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Omar Gonzalez and Eric Lichaj scored late in the first half and the United States beat El Salvador 2-0 on Wednesday night in an ugly CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinal in which defender Henry Romero appeared to bite Jozy Altidore on the back of a shoulder and pull the American forward’s nipple.
Canadian referee Drew Fischer, a Major League Soccer regular, did not penalize the incident, which occurred during a skirmish on the goal line in the 57th minute ahead of a U.S. corner kick. A furious Altidore fell to the ground but remained in the game.
The Americans, who started five veterans added for the tournament’s knockout phase, overcame shaky defensive play and poor passing, advancing to a semifinal against Costa Rica on Saturday at Arlington, Texas.
GOLF…
SOUTHPORT, England (AP) — Jordan Spieth is in the early mix at Royal Birkdale as he tries to add a British Open title to his collection of major championships.
Ian Poulter also had quite the day, making only one bogey on his way to a 3-under 67 that gave him the clubhouse lead among early finishers.
Spieth, who narrowly missed getting in a playoff two years ago at St. Andrews, set the tone for his day when he slashed an iron out of the rough on the second hole to within 10 feet for his first birdie. He added two more to finish off the front nine and was at 3 under on the back nine.
Spieth, who did not make a bogey through 12 holes, has won both the Masters and the U.S. Open but has yet to hoist a claret jug. Neither has Poulter, who is winless in major championships and looking to rebound from a long dry spell in his pro career.
The Englishman played steady before making birdie on the par-5 17th hole from the bunker, then getting up-and-down from another bunker on the 18th hole to post the lowest score so far at the Open.

The news follows McCain’s surgery last Friday to remove a blood clot above his left eye. In a statement late Wednesday, doctors revealed that he has glioblastoma (GLEE’-oh-blas-TOH-muh). The 80-year-old senator and his family are reviewing further treatment, including a combination of chemotherapy and radiation.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Jeff Sessions was the first Republican U.S. senator to endorse Donald Trump for president and Trump rewarded him with the post of attorney general. But now Trump is displeased with Sessions, telling The New York Times he wouldn’t have installed him in the country’s top law enforcement job if he’d known Sessions was going to recuse himself from the Russia investigation. Sessions did so after it was revealed he failed to disclose meetings with Moscow’s ambassador to the United States.
LOVELOCK, Nev. (AP) — O.J. Simpson is making the case on live TV for his release from prison where the 70-year-old former football star has been serving a 33-year sentence for an armed robbery involving sports memorabilia. Simpson will ask Nevada parole officials Thursday to release him in October.
WASHINGTON (AP) — A group of Senate Republicans is making another attempt at pulling together a health care overhaul bill that can gain enough GOP votes to get through the Senate. Some two-dozen lawmakers were involved in negotiations that went well into the night Wednesday. But they offered no signs of visible progress following the Capitol Hill session behind closed doors. Their meeting came after President Donald Trump lectured them at the White House about sending him the legislation.
WAKISO, Uganda (AP) — Menstrual hygiene has emerged as a serious, and often emotional, subject across Africa. Some are demanding that governments supply free sanitary pads to schoolgirls who are at risk of dropping out because of embarrassment. One in 10 African schoolgirls misses school during menstruation, according to the United Nations. Kenya last month announced it will give free pads to all public schools. But Uganda backed away from a similar promise.
