BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Authorities say a Bismarck oral surgeon who was temporarily suspended from practicing medicine has died from a suspected drug overdose.

First responders attempted to revive Dr. Mansureh Iravani with Narcan, a drug meant to reverse the effects of opioid overdose. She was pronounced dead Monday night at a local hospital. Police released her name on Thursday.

Investigators say fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid, was found inside Iravani’s residence.

State regulators suspended the 50-year-old Iravani in March after complaints she pulled the wrong teeth, started procedures without enough sedation and yanked surgical stitches from a patient’s mouth.

Iravani said after the suspension was announced that the allegations were mostly false and she planned to come back and “be a good oral surgeon in this community.”

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A new monthly report shows drought conditions continue to burden the rural economy in parts of 10 Plains and Western states.

The overall Rural Mainstreet Index for the region rose slightly in August to 42.2 from July’s abysmally low 40.7. The index ranges between 0 and 100, with any number under 50 indicating a shrinking economy.

Creighton University economist Ernie Goss, who oversees the survey, says nearly 58 percent of bankers reported in August’s survey that drought conditions were having a negative effect on agriculture products in their area.

Also, bankers expect farmland prices to decline by another 3.5 percent on average over the next year.

Bankers from Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming were surveyed.

Forty-one-year-old Nathan Martinson, of Fargo, was pinned between two trucks after a co-worker backed out of a garage and didn’t know Martinson was there. Martinson died at a hospital emergency room.

The company has until Aug. 28 to decide how to respond. It can pay the penalty, negotiate a settlement or appeal the citation. The business declined comment to The Associated Press.

Women’s Basketball coach Jill DeVries has been named the school’s next athletic director.

DeVries, who was set to begin her 18th season coaching at VCSU, officially starts her athletic director duties on Aug. 21. DeVries says,“We are so pleased that Vanessa has agreed to lead our women’s basketball program. “She was a fierce competitor as a player and is an outstanding teacher of the game. She has experience at all levels as a player, assistant coach and a head coach. I believe she will be a tremendous asset to our department and the women’s basketball program. We look forward to working with Vanessa toward her goals of winning conference championships and giving our student-athletes a positive VCSU experience both athletically and academically.”

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Twins have reinstated relief pitcher Glen Perkins from the disabled list, where he’s been for more than 16 months because of shoulder trouble.

The Twins made the move Thursday before their doubleheader against Cleveland, with all arms needed on deck against the division leaders. Perkins last pitched for the Twins on April 10, 2016, before being shelved and eventually having surgery to repair a torn labrum on June 23, 2016.

After eight rehabilitation appearances in the minor leagues, including Sunday and Monday with Double-A Chattanooga, Perkins is finally back. He has not pitched at Target Field since Oct. 2, 2015. The former closer and three-time All-Star has spent his entire career with the Twins organization since being drafted in the first round in 2004.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Yan Gomes and Jason Kipnis each had three hits including a home run, and the Cleveland Indians beat the Minnesota Twins 9-3 in the first game of a day-night doubleheader Thursday.

Gomes hit a three-run homer in the eighth for his first three-hit game since April 23, 2016. Kipnis went deep two batters later to make it 7-2.

Winners of six straight, the Indians are 9-0 at Target Field this year, outscoring the Twins 65-19.

Byron Buxton homered for Minnesota, which set a franchise record by striking out 19 times in a nine-inning game.

Carlos Carrasco (12-5) allowed five hits in five innings. He retired nine straight batters— including five straight strikeouts — after Buxton’s second-inning home run.

Kyle Gibson (6-10) allowed three runs on seven hits in four-plus innings for the Twins. This is the 15th time in 21 starts this season that Gibson didn’t pitch six innings.

In world and national news…

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) —  The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for the van attack in Barcelona that officials say killed 12 people and injured many others.

A statement carried by the extremist group’s media arm — the Aamaq news agency — says Thursday’s attack was carried out by “soldiers of the Islamic State.”

It says the attack was in response to IS calls for its followers to target countries participating in the coalition trying to drive the extremist group from Syria and Iraq.

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) —  A regional government official in Spain says 13 people have been killed, 50 injured in the van attack at a historic shopping and tourist area of Barcelona.

Catalan Interior Minister official Joaquim Forn also said on Twitter that more than 50 people were injured during Thursday’s attack.

Regional police evacuated stores and bars in the Las Ramblas district.

The move came right after police announced they had arrested one suspect and were “treating him as a terrorist.”

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has offered assistance to authorities in Spain as they investigate.

Speaking to reporters at the State Department shortly after a van plowed into a crowd, Tillerson said the incident “has the hallmarks of what appears to be yet another terrorist attack.”

He says U.S. diplomats in Spain are currently assisting Americans there and asked those who are safe to notify friends and families.

Tillerson says the United States would never relent in tracking down terrorist suspects and holding them to account for their actions.

He said “terrorists around the world should know that the United States and our allies are resolved to find you and bring you to justice.”

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Monday’s solar eclipse is set to star in several special broadcasts on TV and online.

On CSi Cable, PBS 13, ABC 6, NBC 11, NASA Television 80.76 are among the outlets planning extended coverage of the first solar eclipse visible across the United States in 99 years.

Most coverage begins Monday at noon CDT, just before the eclipse begins in Oregon.

Observing or filming the eclipse in its partial phases requires special lenses, but witnessing the complete obfuscation of the sun is safe with the naked eye.  IT IS NOT SAFE TO WATCH THE PARTIAL ECLIPSE WITH THE NAKED EYE …INCLUDING THE UPPER MIDWEST.

BE SURE TO HAVE APPROVED SUNGLASSES MADE FOR ECLIPSE WATCHING, SO AS NOT TO PERMANENTLY DAMAGE YOUR EYES.

The President of the American Optometric Association says you can literally cook your retina, and that part of the eye cannot register a pain feeling with your brain. You’re damaging your eyes and don’t even know it. Sunglasses are not safe, looking through your phone’s camera lens is not safe, and even quick glances at the eclipse can cause injury.

You should NEVER look directly at the sun, but there are many ways to safely view an eclipse. There are filters for binoculars and telescopes designed specifically for looking at the sun. Inexpensive eclipse glasses and viewers are also available for purchase. Or, you can make your own pinhole projector. You can make a tiny “theater” with a cardboard box, foil, and paper, or it can be as simple as poking a tiny hole in a paper plate. As mentioned above, you can also safely view the eclipse via television  or live stream.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House says President Donald Trump is working to find a “convenient” time to speak with the family of the woman killed during a white nationalist rally over the removal of a Robert E. Lee statue. A spokeswoman also says the White House appreciates the “unifying words” that Heather Heyer’s mother spoke at her daughter’s memorial service Wednesday.

BRIDGEWATER, N.J. (AP) — A White House spokeswoman says Steve Bannon’s comments “stand on their own.” In an interview with a liberal publication, The American Prospect, President Donald Trump’s chief strategist said there’s no military solution to the threat posed by North Korea. Just last week, Trump vowed to respond “with fire and fury” to North Korean aggression. In the interview, Bannon also describes the white supremacist movement as “losers,” “a fringe element” and “a collection of clowns.”

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The chairman of the Maine Democratic party says Republican Gov. Paul LePage’s comments about deadly violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, were “unhinged” and “ill informed.” Chairman Phil Bartlett says LePage’s comments that both sides are to blame for the Charlottesville violence echo those of President Donald Trump. He says both men are doubling down on a “shameful and embarrassing” perspective.

NEW YORK (AP) — It took bloodshed in Charlottesville to get tech companies to do what civil rights groups have been calling for for years: take a firmer stand against accounts used to promote hate and violence. In the wake of the deadly clash last weekend in Virginia, major companies such as Google, Facebook and PayPal are banishing a growing number of extremist groups and individuals for violating service terms.
