MAKOTI, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota Highway Patrol has identified two men who died when a pickup truck struck an approach and went airborne.

The patrol says 29-year-old Travis Gillen and 37-year-old David Rocha, both of Minot, died in the Thursday morning crash north of Makoti. They were both passengers.

The driver, 23-year-old Javier Solis-Morales, of Minot, and another passenger, 32-year-old Ernie Gant, of Surrey, were injured. Their conditions are not known.

Solis-Morales was the only one wearing a seatbelt. The three passengers were ejected from the vehicle.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A Fargo native who marched with white nationalists at a deadly rally in Virginia says he’s planning an October demonstration in his hometown and guarantees that it will be peaceful.

Peter Tefft says he’s hoping to get as many as 300 people to join him in downtown Fargo. He says he can guarantee that there won’t be violence because the city is more tolerant than others.

Fargo Mayor Tim Mahoney says he is working with police and other officials on a plan to keep people safe if the rally is held. He says it’s nearly impossible to deny a permit, but the city has discretion on where the demonstration is held.

Mahoney says he has received numerous emails and phone calls from people who want Tefft’s group to stay away.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — An appeals court rejected a Bismarck lawyer’s argument that mandatory fees to the North Dakota Bar Association violate his free speech rights because the money has gone to political activity he doesn’t support.

The 8th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals issued its ruling this week disagreeing with arguments raised by the Phoenix-based Goldwater Institute, a conservative think tank that filed the suit on behalf of the lawyer.

The institute argues attorneys should be given the choice to opt in to political spending by the association. The institute says 18 other states provide that option.

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of a self-employed attorney who objected to a $50,000 contribution to a political action committee that opposed a bill regarding shared parenting time and responsibility in 2014.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Many North Dakota residents can now renew their driver’s license online.

The state Transportation Department launched the new online tool this week for drivers age 21 to 65 who have no changes in their address or name.

To be eligible, drivers must already have a Class D or Class M North Dakota license and must have previously renewed it in person after turning 21.

The online renewals are available every other renewal cycle. The current renewal cycle is six years.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Two childhood friends from Minnesota are recovering at a North Dakota hospital after one gave the other a life changing gift.

WDAY-TV reports that Julie Lundquist received a kidney from her longtime friend, Deb Brogard. Lundquist is now recouping at Sanford Hospital in Fargo.

Lundquist says she was informed she needed a transplant to survive after going through a year of dialysis. She later used social media to ask for help in finding a donor.

Brogard says she volunteered without hesitation. She went through weeks of physical and psychological testing.

She says being a donor is an honor and a blessing. She hopes more people think about becoming a living donor.

Sanford Health says kidneys from living donors usually function immediately and there are fewer chances for rejection.
