Herbert (Herb) Holtz Flitton III, 64, Jamestown, ND, died unexpectedly Thursday, August 24th, at his home.

Herb was born January 13, 1953 in Norfolk, Virginia, the son of Herbert Holtz Flitton Jr. and Hannah Marie (Ellingson) Flitton. He graduated from Norfolk Academy, Norfolk in 1971 where he was active in wrestling and football. He attended Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois, graduating in 1975 with a degree in Bible.

Herb married Joan Strutz of Jamestown, ND, whom he met at Wheaton, on June 12, 1976.

Herb attended Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi graduating in May 1978. Herb and Joan then moved to Steele, ND, in August 1978. Herb jointly served the Steele Presbyterian and Hazelton Presbyterian churches for 10 years. In February of 1989, Herb moved with his family to Jamestown, ND to become pastor of First Baptist. He was then invited to pastor at Prairie Community Church where he remained until 2006. Beginning in 1994, Herb also worked at the North Dakota State Hospital as a CNA, until becoming chaplain in 2006.

He loved spending time with his family and friends and enjoyed being “Bumpa” to his grandchildren. He loved reading, camping, playing games, and sharing the gospel.

Herb is survived by his wife of 41 years, Joan of Jamestown, ND; his children, Kjirsten (David) Boeve of Traverse City, MI; Christopher Flitton of Fargo, ND; Heidi Flitton of Jamestown, ND; Jennie (Alex) Tweten of Fargo, ND; Timothy of Jamestown, ND; and his daughter-in-law Bethany Flitton (John) Den Boer of Grand Haven, MI. He is also survived by his grandchildren (Landon, Eden, Greyson, and Callan Boeve; Elijah Flitton; Embry, Ezekiel, and Abel Tweten; Suzanne, Lucas, and Andrew Den Boer), his sister Christina (Rob) Michaels, his brother David (Lori) Flitton, his mother-in-law, Ruth Strutz, as well as two nieces and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his father and mother; his son, Peter Flitton; and his father-in-law, Carl Strutz.

The funeral service is at 11:00 AM Wednesday, August 30, 2017 at Temple Baptist Church in Jamestown, ND. Visitation will be at Eddy Funeral Home in Jamestown, ND, Tuesday, August, 29 from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. A family and friend prayer service Tuesday, August 29, at 7:00 PM, also at Temple Baptist Church.
