FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Hundreds of mourners, many of them wearing red shirts, gathered to remember a Fargo woman whose body was found three days after authorities recovered a newborn baby believed to be hers.
The funeral Thursday for 22-year-old Savanah Greywind included Native American songs and prayer and tributes from Spirit Lake Tribal Chairwoman Myra Pearson and Fargo Mayor Tim Mahoney.
Pearson said she couldn’t find the words to express what happened, but says it has brought communities together and she believes “something great is going to come out of this.” Mahoney said the entire community lost a daughter.
The red shirts are meant to honor Greywind and other indigenous women killed or missing.
A private burial ceremony was planned later Thursday.
Two of Greywind’s neighbors are charged with murder and kidnapping.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A federal judge has thrown out a lawsuit by a Fargo woman who says police wrongly accused of her of possessing a meth pipe.
Sarah Rhodes filed a civil rights complaint last year that named the city of Fargo, two police officers and the former police chief.
Police said they found the pipe in the backseat of a squad car after Rhodes had been arrested on suspicion of drunken driving. Rhodes said the pipe had been thrown on the floor of the squad car by another suspect two days earlier.
Rhodes was originally charged with a felony for possession of drug paraphernalia. The charge was later dropped. She was convicted of DUI and fined $600.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Drought conditions in the Dakotas haven’t changed much over the past week, due to above-normal temperatures and little rain.
The latest U.S. Drought Monitor map shows 66 percent of North Dakota in some stage of drought, unchanged over the week. Twenty-one percent of the state is in extreme or exceptional drought, down slightly from 22 percent.
The Drought Monitor says conditions improved in south central North Dakota but worsened in the north central part of the state.
In South Dakota, 71 percent of the state is in some stage of drought, up from 69 percent. Forty-four percent of the state is in severe or extreme drought, up slightly from 43 percent.
The Drought Monitor says conditions improved in southeastern South Dakota but worsened in the western part of the state.
WAHPETON, N.D. (AP) — Wahpeton Mayor Meryl Hansey has resigned in the midst of his battle with cancer.
The 81-year-old Hansey had been absent from his public duties due to his illness since June. The Daily News reports that the City Council accepted his resignation on Tuesday.
City residents have 15 days to file a petition calling for a special election. If no one files, the council may appoint one of its own members to fill out Hansey’s term, which expires next June.
Council President Steve Dale has been handling the mayoral duties.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Republicans have almost doubled the size of the disaster relief package for Harvey to more than $15 billion, a first installment to help communities in Texas rebuild from the storm — and stock reserves for looming damage from Hurricane Irma. The must-do legislation is paired with a short-term increase in the government’s borrowing authority and a temporary government funding bill. It’s on track to pass the Senate as early as today.
UNDATED (AP) — Potentially catastrophic structural failures last winter at America’s tallest dam left managers literally in the dark, despite years of federal urging to consider bolstering cameras and other monitors to give them time to alert the public in an emergency. California state records reviewed by The Associated Press reveal for the first time the difficulty Oroville Dam managers had gauging the evolving dangers in February for 188,000 people who had been evacuated downstream.
BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — Pope Francis is telling Colombia’s bishops that they have a unique role to play in helping Colombians heal from a half-century of rebellion, saying they must show a “distinct kind of moral courage” to help Colombians overcome their base instincts of war and fear. Francis also urged the church hierarchy to work for unity and communion in-house — a reference to the divisions even within the Catholic Church over the terms of the peace accord.
UNDATED (AP) — Education Secretary Betsy DeVos says any new policy on investigating sexual assault on college campus must balance the rights of victims and the accused. She’s announced plans to replace Obama administration guidance that spelling out schools’ responsibility. She calls that a failed system.
NEW YORK (AP) — Former New York Yankees shortstop, manager and executive Gene Michael has died at 79. The team says he had a heart attack. After his playing career ended in 1976, Michael joined the Yankees’ front office and served as manager and general manager under owner George Steinbrenner. He helped put together the Derek Jeter-led teams that won World Series titles in 1996 and from 1998 to 2000. He then remained a key adviser to current general manager Brian Cashman.
