FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Hundreds of mourners, many of them wearing red shirts, gathered to remember a Fargo woman whose body was found three days after authorities recovered a newborn baby believed to be hers.

The funeral Thursday for 22-year-old Savanah Greywind included Native American songs and prayer and tributes from Spirit Lake Tribal Chairwoman Myra Pearson and Fargo Mayor Tim Mahoney.

Pearson said she couldn’t find the words to express what happened, but says it has brought communities together and she believes “something great is going to come out of this.” Mahoney said the entire community lost a daughter.

The red shirts are meant to honor Greywind and other indigenous women killed or missing.

A private burial ceremony was planned later Thursday.

Two of Greywind’s neighbors are charged with murder and kidnapping.

WAHPETON, N.D. (AP) — Eighteen people have been displaced by a fire that swept through a 12-unit apartment building in Wahpeton.

Authorities say the fire appears to have started on a first floor deck late Thursday night. It rapidly spread up the building’s exterior walls to the third floor and attic. Six apartments were gutted. The others were damaged by smoke and water.

Richland County Emergency Manager Brett Lambrecht says half the building was on fire when firefighters arrived on scene at 11:15 p.m.

Wahpeton police went door to door as the fire spread, waking some tenants. No one was hurt.

Lambrecht says residents have been put up in local hotels or are staying with relatives. The Red Cross is assisting those in need.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A federal judge has blocked construction work on a Red River flood control project in the Fargo-Moorhead area.

U.S. District Judge John Tunheim ruled Thursday the project needs to obtain the necessary permits from Minnesota before construction can proceed. Minnesota so far has rejected the permits.

The $2.2 billion proposal calls for a diversion channel to carry floodwaters around the Fargo area. The Fargo-Moorhead Diversion Authority and Army Corps of Engineers want to proceed with work on the North Dakota side without waiting for Minnesota’s approval.

Tunheim says there’s no question that Fargo, North Dakota, and Moorhead, Minnesota, need permanent flood protection. He urged the parties to work together to find common ground and serve the interests of both states and the affected communities.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s secretary of state has declined to give voter information to a commission looking at election fraud.Al Jaeger notified President Donald Trump’s commission this week that the state won’t release the information. Jaeger says in a letter released Thursday that North Dakota can’t release some of the information because it doesn’t apply to the state because it has no voter registration.

Jaeger says North Dakota law also forbids the state from releasing details about voters.

The state had considered handing over the information earlier after the commission pledged not to make public individual voters’ information. But the state now has decided against it.

Separately, Jaeger did provide responses Tuesday to a series of questions posed by the voting commission on the state’s views and recommendations about voting integrity.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Gov. Doug Burgum says he has met with federal officials to advocate for drought relief for North Dakota.

Burgum says he met Thursday with U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue and U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke.

Burgum made a request on Aug. 8 for a presidential major disaster declaration for drought. That request is still pending.

Drought conditions in the Dakotas haven’t changed much over the past week, due to above-normal temperatures and little rain.

The latest U.S. Drought Monitor map shows 66 percent of North Dakota in some stage of drought, unchanged over the week. Twenty-one percent of the state is in extreme or exceptional drought, down slightly from 22 percent.

Drought conditions improved in south-central North Dakota but worsened in the north-central part of the state.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — State agriculture officials in the Northern Plains have divided up 16 semi-loads of hay donated from around the country to help drought-stricken ranchers in the region.

Nearly 1,400 ranchers from the Dakotas and Montana applied to the hay lottery program set up by North Dakota’s Agriculture Department, North Dakota State University and the Michigan-based nonprofit Ag Community Relief.

Drawings were conducted this week. Hay is going to 12 ranchers in North Dakota, two in South Dakota and two in Montana. The numbers correlate with the percentage of applications from each state.

More drawings are possible if hay donations continue to come in.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — A Grand Forks man has been sentenced to more than 16 years in prison on child pornography charges.

Thirty-eight-year-old Eric Basile pleaded guilty earlier to a pair of charges, including receiving and distributing child pornography.

Authorities say the case came to the attention of law enforcement after two University of North Dakota students complained that Basile had engaged in inappropriate behavior. Basile had been a flight instructor at the school.

U.S. District Judge Ralph Erickson also ordered Basile to serve 15 years of supervised release and pay $24,000 to a crime victims’ fund.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A federal judge has thrown out a lawsuit by a Fargo woman who says police wrongly accused of her of possessing a meth pipe.

Sarah Rhodes filed a civil rights complaint last year that named the city of Fargo, two police officers and the former police chief.

Police said they found the pipe in the backseat of a squad car after Rhodes had been arrested on suspicion of drunken driving. Rhodes said the pipe had been thrown on the floor of the squad car by another suspect two days earlier.

Rhodes was originally charged with a felony for possession of drug paraphernalia. The charge was later dropped. She was convicted of DUI and fined $600.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — Residents of the Grand Forks area gobbled up more than four tons of french fries during an annual french fry feed in the city.

The event is held during the annual Potato Bowl week that celebrates the spud industry in the Red River Valley.

Participants ate 8,154 pounds of french fries on Thursday, mashing the event’s previous record of 5,220 pounds set in 2015.

The potatoes are supplied by the J.R. Simplot Co., which has a fry plant in Grand Forks.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Hunters in North Dakota can now access the updated guide to private land in the state that’s open to public hunting.

The Game and Fish Department’s Private Land Open To Sportsmen Guide for 2017 is available online at the agency’s website and at most vendors throughout the state. It’s not available by mail.

The program funded by hunter license fees is better known by the acronym PLOTS. It pays landowners who agree to keep their property open to public hunting.

PLOTS land is marked by yellow inverted triangular signs. The free guide features about 737,000 PLOTS acres.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Twins’ Jorge Polanco drove in the go-ahead runs off ailing Kansas City closer Kelvin Herrera with two outs in the ninth inning, and Minnesota rallied to beat the Royals 4-2 Thursday night. Trevor Hildenberger earned the win with a scoreless eighth in relief of Twins starter Kyle Gibson.

The Indians set a team-record with their 15th consecutive victory by belting five home runs and getting another strong performance from Corey Kluber in an 11-2 pounding of the White Sox in Chicago. It’s the longest winning streak since the 2002 Oakland Athletics won 20 in a row on their way to the AL West title.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — There were big plays all over the field. The Chiefs, not the Patriots, were making them. Alex Smith threw two long touchdown passes and rookie Kareem Hunt, after fumbling on his first NFL carry, scored three times to help Kansas City stun New England 42-27 Thursday night in the season opener.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — When Adrian Peterson wore purple, the revered running back was predictably off limits for Minnesota’s defense during practice. Now his old friends on the Vikings defense will be eyeing him up from the other side, eager to tackle him for the first time. Peterson spent 10 seasons with Minnesota, until he became a free agent and signed with New Orleans this spring. The Vikings host Peterson and the Saints Monday night.

TENNIS-US OPEN

NEW YORK (AP) — It will be Sloane Stephens versus Madison Keys in Saturday’s U.S. Open women’s final.

The unseeded Stephens earned a spot in her first Grand Slam final by outlasting No. 9 Venus Williams, 1-6, 6-0, 7-5. Stephens quickly went up a service break in the third set, but she eventually trailed 5-4 and was two points from defeat before taking the last three games. The rally ended Williams’ quest to reach the final for the first time in 15 years.

Stephens is just the fourth unseeded player to reach the U.S. Open women’s final in the 49 years of the Open era, and the first since Roberta Vinci in 2015.

The 15th-seeded Keys rolled to a 6-1, 6-2 win over No. 20 Coco Vandeweghe to reach her first Grand Slam final.

Keys won 19 of the first 22 points and raced to a 5-0 lead in an opening set that lasted just 23 minutes. She continued to dominate despite an upper right leg injury that caused her to call the trainer to be taped midway through the second set.

The men’s semifinals are today.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL-IRMA

UNDATED (AP) — Tenth-ranked Florida State and No. 22 Florida have canceled their respective home openers because of impending Hurricane Irma.

Neither game will be made up.

Also, South Florida and UConn called off their scheduled football game Saturday because of Irma. No makeup date was immediately announced.

She fired a 9-under 63 that included 11 birdies and two bogeys, leaving her one shot ahead of Sandra Gal and Kris Tamulis. Thompson fell one stroke short of the Brickyard Crossing record set by Mike McCullough in the PGA Tour Champions’ 1999 Comfort Classic.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Authorities in Mexico say they are evacuating residents in Puerto Madero in Chiapas as a precaution due to a tsunami alert put in place after a major earthquake struck the country. Chiapas’ civil protection agency has tweeted that the evacuation was underway and posted photos of residents getting off a truck and going into what appeared to be a shelter. No further details have been provided. A tsunami warning was put in place after the earthquake hit Mexico’s southern coast.

WILMINGTON, Delaware (AP) — An Associated Press and USA TODAY Network analysis reveals that Wilmington, Delaware, leads the country in shootings among young people under 18. Of the top 10 cities with the highest rates of teen shootings, most were smaller cities with populations between 50,000 and 250,000; high on the list were Syracuse, New York, and Savannah, Georgia.
