Jamestown (CSi) The Annual 9-1-1 Patriot Day Observance is set for Jamestown on Monday September 11, 2017 sponsored by the Jamestown Patriotic Council.
The activities begin with The Freedom Walk at 6-p.m. at Zonta Park and end at the All Vets Club.
Following the Walk, there will be a presentation by the Service Guide Dogs of America, at the Club. BBQ’s Chips and bars will be available. with a free will offering and proceeds going to the Guide Dogs of American.
The entire community is welcome, and a special welcome to first responders and veterans of the Global War on Terrorism.
Patriot Day honors the memory of all lives lost on 9-11-01, in the terrorist attack on America.
Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown City Fire Department was called out Friday about 4:15-p.m., to a report of a grass fire in 400 block of 4th Avenue, Southwest, near the Klaus Park walking bridge, on the east side of the river.
The small area burned Friday is approximately the same spot that was burned, and responded to on September 5th.
Three units of the City Fire Department were on the scene about 45 minutes.
(CSi) Canadian Pacific rail line officials in a news release say, trains will move faster through the Jamestown area, and in southeast North Dakota.
The maximum speed for trains traveling between Valley City and Emrick, North Dakota will increase from 49 mph to 60 mph on September 20, 2017.
Emrick is in Wells County about five miles southeast of Fessenden. Communities included along the route are Rogers, Leal, Wimbledon, Courtenay, Kensal, Bordulac, Carrington and Cathay.
Canadian Pacific, spokesman, Andy Cummings says the increased speed was possible due to investments in modern signaling technology.
He says, “Track infrastructure and inspection standards meet or exceed all federal requirements for 60 mph operation.”
Motorists should use caution when approaching train tracks. More safety information on rail safety is available at Operation Lifesaver at www.oli.org.
Valley City (CSi) Residents are being updated on the Valley City parking lot improvement project.
Finished is most of the concrete work in two city parking lots including the lot north of the post office and the parking lot west of the Viking Room building.
KLJ reports starting on Monday September 11, 2017, mill and overlay operations will start on the parking lot north of the post office and the parking lot west of the Viking Room building.
Also, on Monday construction will start on Veterans parking lot, that is receiving a mill and overlay and new one way and do not enter signs. The parking lot will become a one-way parking lot traveling from Central Avenue to 2nd Avenue Northeast. These parking lots will be closed while concrete work and mill and overlay work is being completed.
The three parking lots completed earlier this year have some minor repairs that will be addressed as well. Partial closures are expected to complete these fixes.
Updated maps for all parking lot closures will be posted on the City of Valley City’s website when they are taking affect.

Bismarck (CSi) The NDDOT reports that drivers license offices across North Dakota will close for training between September 26, 2017 and September 28th.
The exception is the Bismarck office at 608 East Boulevard Avenue, which will remain open from 7:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. on Sept. 26.
All drivers license offices will reopen for normal business hours on September 29th.
North Dakota residents between the ages of 21 and 65 and who have previously renewed in person after turning 21 are now able to renew their driver’s license online at https://apps.nd.gov/dot/dlts/dlos/renewal/welcome.htm.
Motor Vehicle offices will remain open to process registrations, titles and associated work during the period.
BISMARCK, N.D. (Sept. 11, 2017) – Gov. Doug Burgum has directed all government agencies to fly the United States and North Dakota flags at half-staff on Monday, and encouraged North Dakota residents to do the same, in remembrance of those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
The governor’s directive is in accordance with a proclamation issued by
President Donald Trump, who also requested that Americans observe a moment of silence at 7:46 a.m. Central Daylight Time on Monday to honor the nearly 3,000 victims of the attacks.
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) Miss North Dakota, Twenty-three-year-old Cara Mund of Bismarck, bested a field of 51 competitors from each state and the District of Columbia during the weeklong Miss America finale Sunday night in Atlantic City.
Miss America 2017, Savvy Shields, former Miss Arkansas, placed the crown on her teary-eyed successor’s head as the new Miss America accepted applause and cheers from the audience and judges.
The Bismarck, North Dakota, resident emerged victorious through a series of swimsuit and talent contests, onstage speeches and two rounds of interviews by judges.
ERIE, N.D. (AP) — More than a dozen people at a campground in rural Cass County rescued two adults and a child who were tossed into a lake when their boat overturned.
The boat capsized in heavy wind on Brewer Lake near Erie Sunday. The boat’s driver Dylan Rickford says he was having trouble with the motor when they hit a wave and flipped.
Campers at scrambled to action, launched a boat and brought the three to safety before emergency personnel arrived.
ST. JOHN, N.D. (AP) — Authorities say an 18-year-old woman was killed when an SUV struck a stalled all-terrain vehicle in northern North Dakota.
The Highway Patrol says the crash happened around 8 p.m. Saturday on a Rolette County road near St. John.
Authorities say a Honda ATV had mechanical problems and was stalled on the edge of the road. The driver of a Polaris ATV had hooked up his winch to tow the vehicle when a Cadillac Escalade struck the group as they were preparing to leave.
A St. John woman who was a passenger on the Honda ATV was killed. Her name has not been released. The driver of that ATV suffered non-life-threatening injuries and the other ATV driver was not hurt. The SUV driver also was not injuried.
The patrol is investigating.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Kathryn Helgaas Burgum is taking on addiction recovery for her platform as North Dakota’s first lady.
Helgaas Burgum says she is a recovering alcoholic and wanted to use her experience of being sober for the past 15 years to help others.
She’ll host the daylong “Recovery Reinvented” event later this month in Bismarck to bring together state and national recovery experts.
Meanwhile, Gov. Doug Burgum has pledged to donate his salary to addiction recovery and treatment initiatives.
Burgum says his wife last week gave her first public speech about her recovery at a luncheon in Washington.
Burgum says she “got a standing ovation and there was not a dry eye in the place.”
DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) — Lake Region State College has created a campus police force as part of an initiative started in 2013 to improve safety and security.
The Devils Lake Journal reports that Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs Lloyd Halvorson is a licensed peace officer in the state of North Dakota. He is one of four licensed peace officers on staff who now comprise the new police force for the college campus.
Halvorson says the force isn’t on campus to actively police but to protect the community as first responders.
College officials also have taken other security measures, including utilizing an email, phone and text notification system to alert faculty, staff and students of an emergency on campus. Cameras and lighting on campus also have been added and upgraded.

Stephen Strasburg threw eight innings of two-hit ball and Trea (tray) Turner homered as the Nats nipped Philadelphia, 3-2. The Braves eliminated Miami from the division race by scoring three times in the ninth before Lane Adams belted a two-run homer in the 11th inning of Atlanta’s 10-8 win over the Marlins.

The Eagles were 30-17 winners at Washington behind Carson Wentz, who completed 26 of his 39 throws for 307 yards and two touchdowns. Wentz made fewer errors than Washington’s Kirk Cousins, who was picked off at the goal line and fumbled twice. Fletcher Cox clinched the victory by returning a fumble 20 yards for a TD with 1:29 remaining.
The Green Bay Packers could be a lot more than an offensive juggernaut this season.
The Packers gave up no touchdowns and turned a big defensive play into a score to earn a 17-9 win over the Seahawks. Seattle had to settle for three field goals and finished with just 225 net yards, with Russell Wilson completing 14 of 27 passes for 158 yards.
Matt Ryan connected with Austin Hooper on an 88-yard TD and led two fourth-quarter scoring drives as the Falcons outlasted the Bears, 23-17 in Chicago. Ryan was 21 of 30 for 321 yards and a touchdown, while Hooper had two catches for 128 yards. The Falcons’ defense delivered a game-saving, goal-line stand after the Bears had first-and-10 at the Atlanta 5 in the final minute.

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. (AP) — Don Ohlmeyer, the “Monday Night Football” producer who came up with the phrase “Must See TV” in leading NBC to the No. 1 prime-time spot, died Sunday. He was 72.
“It is with heavy hearts we share that Don Ohlmeyer, our beloved husband, father and grandfather, has passed away at age of 72 due to cancer,” Ohlmeyer’s family said in a statement. “Surrounded by loved ones, he died peacefully at his home in Indian Wells.”
Longtime friend Al Michaels announced Ohlmeyer’s death while broadcasting NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” game between the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants.
Ohlmeyer won 16 Emmys, including the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Ohlmeyer began his broadcasting career at ABC Sports under Roone Arledge, working on “Wide World of Sports.” Along with “Monday Night Football” work, he directed the network’s Olympic coverage and created “The Superstars.” Later at NBC Sports, he produced World Series and Super Bowl broadcasts.
After running his own Ohlmeyer Communications Company, he returned to NBC in 1993 as president of its entertainment division. He came up with “Must See TV” in the 1990s, when NBC’s rating soared with such hits as “Seinfeld,” ”Friends,” ”ER” and “Frasier.”
Ohlmeyer first worked for ABC Sports as a gofer while studying at Notre Dame and became a full-time production assistant in 1967.

NEW YORK (AP) — Rafael Nadal (nah-DAHL’) is a Grand Slam champion for the 16th time following an easy win over No. 32 seed Kevin Anderson at the U.S. Open.
Nadal completed his dominant two-week run at Flushing Meadows with a 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 victory over the 31-year-old South African. Nadal broke Anderson four times and never lost on serve in completing his third U.S. Open championship and first since 2013.
It’s the second major title of the year for Nadal, who also captured the French Open.
Anderson was the lowest-ranked U.S. Open men’s finalist since the ATP computer rankings began in 1973.

UNDATED (AP) — Alabama stays atop the latest Associated Press college football poll, but there’s a new No. 2.
The Crimson Tide claimed 58 of 61 first-place votes following Saturday’s 41-10 win over Fresno State.
Oklahoma climbed from fifth to second with its convincing victory at Ohio State. The outcome also dropped the Buckeyes from second to eighth.
Clemson holds at No. 3, followed by Southern Cal and Penn State.
Washington, Michigan, Ohio State, Oklahoma State and Wisconsin fill out the top 10.
UCLA cracked the poll at No. 25, and Notre Dame fell out following a 20-19 loss to Georgia.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Nearly 4.5 million homes and businesses across Florida have lost power as Hurricane Irma moves over the state. And utility officials say it will take weeks to restore electricity to everyone. Farther north, more than 100,000 are in the dark in Georgia. Much of eastern Alabama and coastal South Carolina are under tropical storm warnings as Irma pummels Florida, weakening on its march northward.
HAVANA (AP) — Officials are sending in more aid and have stepped-up evacuations in remote Caribbean islands devastated and cut off by Hurricane Irma. Many in the chain of Leeward Islands have criticized governments for failing to respond quickly to the disaster caused by the Category 5 hurricane. The storm flattened buildings and turned the islands’ lush green hills to a brown stubble.
NEW YORK (AP) — Police officers are on hand after a threat referencing Sept. 11 was found written in a bathroom stall in a Pennsylvania school. Officers are patrolling Central Bucks West High School in Doylestown as a precaution Monday.
WASHINGTON (AP) — New Yorker Donald Trump is set to take part in a 9/11 commemoration Monday for the first time as president. Trump, accompanied by first lady Melania Trump, will observe a moment of silence at the White House, timed to the time that day that the first airplane struck one of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in lower Manhattan. The pair will then travel to the Pentagon for an observance. Vice President Mike Pence will appear at a remembrance at a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The United States has called for a vote Monday on new U.N. sanctions against North Korea, though exactly what measures will be in the resolution remain a mystery. Security Council diplomats, who weren’t authorized to speak publicly because talks have been private, said the U.S. and China were still negotiating the text late Sunday. Last Tuesday, the U.S. circulated a draft proposing the toughest-ever sanctions on North Korea, including a ban on all oil and natural gas exports to the country
