Jamestown (CSi) Jamestown Street Department informs motorists that another announced TEMPORARY STREET CLOSURE, 3rd Street Northeast, (College Hill) between 9th Avenue Northeast and 12th Avenue Northeast for the next week, starting Monday September 11, 2017.
Please follow the detour signage.
Motorists and other traffic should use extreme caution when entering these construction maintenance areas. The public should consider alternate routes.
The road maintenance activities are contingent on changing weather conditions.
Bismarck (CSi) – Visiting Louis L’Amour Elementary School in Jamestown Monday, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Kirsten Baesler announced that Jamestown teacher Heather Tomlin-Rohr had been chosen as a finalist for the 2018 North Dakota Teacher of the Year Award.
Tomlin-Rohr teaches kindergarten at Louis L’Amour. A native of Jamestown and alumna of the University of Jamestown, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education in the spring of 2002, she began teaching kindergarten at Louis L’Amour in the fall of 2002.
Baesler informed Tomlin-Rohr that she had been selected as one of five finalists for the 2018 award. The superintendent is visiting each finalist in his or her classroom to call attention to their achievement and to celebrate teaching excellence in North Dakota’s public schools. Baesler and Governor, Doug Burgum will honor the person chosen as Teacher of the Year on September 28, 2017.
Tomlin-Rohr said that as a child and young adult, her grandmother, who was herself a teacher, had influenced her to consider going into the profession. Her grandmother’s stories of her days in the classroom saying, “ (It) was very much like listening to someone read an episode of Little House on the Prairie.”
She called public education “one of the most noble institutions in America” and said her philosophy of education was to focus on each student and help each one to realize his or her potential.
“Nearly every day I spend in the classroom, I find myself reaffirming the fact that every student I serve deserves the very best that I can offer.”
Tomlin-Rohr was also a Teacher of the Year finalist in 2016, when the honor was won by Amy Neal, a kindergarten teacher at Lewis & Clark Elementary School in Minot. Last year’s winner was Nancy Dauwen, a mathematics teacher at Sheyenne High School in West Fargo.
Jamestown Public School Superintendent Rob Lech adds, Tomlin-Rohr is “respected across the district for her commitment to the profession. Due to her commitment, each child in her classroom is loved and provided every opportunity to achieve at his or her maximum capacity,”
Jamestown (CSi) Ribbon Cutting at Jamestown’s Two Rivers Activity Center (TRAC) opens is on Wednesday September 13, 2017.
Jamestown Area Chamber of Commerce, Executive, Becky Thatcher-Keller points out that the Ribbon Cutting is at 4:30-p.m.
TRAC is a state-of-the-art recreation center, designed to support health and wellness for all ages, with programming, recreational and leisure activities, and youth development.
The 135,000 square feet of space includes the gym, tennis/turf area, aquatic center, group fitness rooms, cardio and weight room, and learning center for children.
The Adventure Space, Drop-In Child Care is available for Children ages 6 weeks to 12 years, while a parent uses the TRAC facility at a cost of $3 per child for members and $5 per child for non-members.
Hours for Adventure Space are Monday-Friday 8-a.m., to 11-a.m., and 3-p.m. to 7-p.m. Weekend drop-in care will be available upon demand.

Jamestown (CSi) The “Dan Wilhelm Memorial Car and Bike Show,” and 5K Run/Walk ,will be held at Don Wilhelm, Chevrolet, Buick, GMC on Business Loop West, in Jamestown Sat Sept 23, 2017. It commemorates the late Dan Wilhelm. Funds raised from the 5K Run/Walk will also be raised to support the Huntington’s Disease Society of America, with a 5K Run/Walk.
The Car and Bike Show is organized by the James Valley Street Machines Car Club is from 10-a.m. to 5-p.m. Car/Bike Set Up, 8-a.m. to 10-a.m., with donations going to the Huntington’s Society. Register before September 15, at $10 after, $15.

Dan Wilhelm was a co-owner of Wilhelm Chevrolet Buick GMC and lost his life to Huntington’s Disease at the age of 55, on November 11, 2012. All proceeds from the Run/Walk will go to Huntington’s Disease Society of America.
The benefit 5K Run/Walk, will have, “day-of” registration, from 7-a.m., to 8-a.m., with the run from 8-a.m., to 10-a.m., starting at the dealership, on Business Loop West in Jamestown. Registration before September, 15th, is $20 for Adults, Youth 12 and under $15, Seniors 60 and older, $15. After September 15th Adults $25, Youth 12 and under $20, Seniors 60 and older $20.

A cure is yet to be found, as Huntington’s disease is an inherited brain disorder that results in the progressive loss of mental faculties and physical control.
An individual who has been diagnosed with Huntington’s disease will eventually die from pneumonia, heart failure or other complications.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) — The boyfriend of slain Fargo woman Savanna Greywind says DNA tests have confirmed that he and Greywind are the parents of a newborn girl found in the apartment of two people charged in the case.
Ashton Matheny tells The Forum newspaper that legal custody of the baby hasn’t been awarded, but he believes it will happen soon. He said the baby has been in his care for nearly a week.
Neither Matheny nor a family spokesman responded to messages from The Associated Press. Deputy Police Chief Joseph Anderson did not return phone and email messages seeking comment.
Brooke Crews and her boyfriend William Hoehn (HAYN) are charged with conspiracy to commit murder and kidnapping in Greywind’s death. Their lawyers have declined comment. Greywind’s body was found in the Red River.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — The new Miss America has taken the traditional morning-after dip in the ocean a day after winning the title.
Cara (KAHR’-uh) Mund of North Dakota posed for photographers along the surf on the Atlantic City beach Monday.
The 23-year-old won the crown Sunday night after saying in an onstage interview that President Donald Trump was wrong to pull the United States out of the Paris climate accord. Mund said the Republican president should not have withdrawn the U.S. from the climate accord aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming.
The Brown University graduate is headed to law school. Mund went to high school with Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz.
She is the first contestant from North Dakota to win the Miss America crown.
ST. JOHN, N.D. (AP) — Authorities have identified the teen who was killed when an SUV struck a stalled all-terrain vehicle in northern North Dakota.
The Highway Patrol says the crash happened around 8 p.m. Saturday on a Rolette County road near St. John.
Authorities say a Honda ATV had mechanical problems and was stalled on the edge of the road. The driver of a Polaris ATV had hooked up his winch to tow the vehicle when a Cadillac Escalade struck the group as they were preparing to leave.
Eighteen-year-old Taitum Eller from St. John was killed. She was a passenger on the Honda ATV. The driver of that ATV suffered non-life-threatening injuries and the other ATV driver was not hurt. The SUV driver also was not injured.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — It was a close call for a Grand Forks homeowner after he confronted two gunmen who were trying to rob him.
Police say officers responded to shots fire at the house about 12:30 p.m. Sunday. The homeowner told police he heard a noise and when he went to investigate, he found the two men who fired at him as they fled.
Authorities say the men fired additional shots once outside the house. The men, ages 18 and 19, are being held on possible charges of robbery and terrorizing.
BRECKENRIDGE, Minn. (AP) — Jury selection is scheduled next week for the North Dakota man accused of attempted murder in a shooting in Breckenridge.
Twenty-eight-year-old Matthew Allard, of Wahpeton, is accused of shooting Isaac Herrera in the stomach during an argument last December at a home. Allard was arrested the next day at a mobile home in Wahpeton. He’s facing five felony counts.
The Daily News says jury selection is to start Sept. 19 in Wilkin County District Court.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Georgia officials say at least one person has been killed by Tropical Storm Irma. Georgia Emergency Management Agency spokeswoman Catherine Howden said Monday that one storm-related death has been confirmed in Worth County, about 170 miles (270 kilometers) south of Atlanta.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy has issued a temporary order allowing the Trump administration to maintain its restrictive policy on refugees for the time being. The order is in response to the administration’s request for the high court to block a lower court ruling that could allow up to 24,000 refugees to enter the United States.
MARIGOT, St. Martin (AP) — In the chaotic days after Hurricane Irma smashed St. Martin, the storm also exposed simmering racial tensions on the island’s French territory. Some black and mixed-race residents are complaining that white tourists were given priority during the evacuation. The French prime minister says the only people being prioritized were the most vulnerable. Government spokesman Christophe Castaner says he understands islanders’ frustration but blamed part of the controversy on their “emotional shock.”
NEW YORK (AP) — Some Americans are marking the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks by volunteering on service projects. In New York City, shifts of volunteers gathered at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum to put together meals to be distributed to people in need locally, as well as those affected by hurricanes in Texas and Florida. The co-founder of an organization that pushed for Sept. 11 to be recognized as a national day of service says, “We simply wanted something good to come from this day.”
CHICAGO (AP) — Attorneys for Chicago are asking a federal judge to stop President Donald Trump’s administration from withholding public safety grants from cities and counties that provide sanctuary to immigrants in the country illegally. In a hearing on Monday, attorney Ronald Safer asked U.S. District Judge Harry Leinenweber for a “nationwide” temporary injunction” to stop the plan. The judge did not rule immediately.
