FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Federal prosecutors are accusing a man of cashing thousands of dollars in counterfeit checks at several North Dakota banks.
Mikey Ramone George is charged with nine counts of bank fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud. He has yet to appear in federal court.
Authorities say fake checks were cashed at Gate City, First International, Western State and Bell Bank, among others. The value of the checks is estimated at about $24,000.
George was arrested last week in Georgia.
Prosecutors did not return phone calls seeking comment. Court documents do not list an attorney for George.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota regulators have approved an agreement settling allegations that the Texas-based builder of the Dakota Access pipeline violated state rules during construction.
North Dakota’s Public Service Commission last year accused Energy Transfer Partners of improperly reporting the discovery of American Indian artifacts. Regulators also were looking into whether crews removed too many trees.
The deal the commission approved Wednesday calls for ETP to help develop and promote an industry manual for handling artifacts discoveries, and to plant more trees along the pipeline route than it had proposed. The state isn’t requiring a $15,000 fine or payment, as it had proposed earlier.
The agreement was worked out by attorneys for the company and the commission.
The $3.8 billion pipeline began moving North Dakota oil to Illinois on June 1.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota Sen. John Hoeven says he is “supportive” of new legislation that would undo the Obama health law.
President Donald Trump and Republican Senate leaders are trying to rally 50 Republican votes to pass the bill that would replace much of former President Barack Obama’s law with block grants to states so they can devise their own health care coverage rules.
The North Dakota Republican says in a statement that the bill, among other things, “appears” to give the state “more funding to help low-income individuals access health insurance.”
North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum was among 15 governors who signed a letter to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Tuesday supporting the block grant program to states as the “best option on the table for repealing and replacing Obamacare.”
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s taxable sales and purchases have increased for the first time in two years.
State tax data shows that from April to June nearly $4.7 billion in taxable sales and purchases were made. That’s a nearly 7 percent increase from the same period last year.
Tax Commissioner Ryan Rauschenberger tells The Bismarck Tribune that a “new normal” is emerging that’s comparable to pre-oil boom levels. He says the state is seeing rig counts go up with a moderate increase in oil production.
Eight of the 15 major sectors recorded gains when compared to the second quarter a year ago, including the mining and oil extraction sector, which saw an increase of nearly 69 percent.
Oil field counties Williams and McKenzie also saw gains with percentage increases of nearly 32 and 28.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s newest state Supreme Court justice is officially on the job.
An investiture ceremony was held Wednesday to install Justice Jon Jensen, who has been hearing cases since Aug. 15.
Gov. Doug Burgum in July appointed Jensen to replace Justice Carol Kapsner. Kapsner announced her resignation in April after nearly 18 years on the state’s highest court.
Jensen had been the presiding judge of the Northeast Central District. He’s a graduate of the University of North Dakota law school and previously was in private practice in Grand Forks.
Jensen will serve at least two years before the general election in November 2020, when he must run for a new 10-year term.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) — Ward County is giving the city of Minot about $5 million to help with property buyouts for a long-term flood protection project.
The city is running short on funds to continue its own acquisitions and appealed to the county for excess money the county received from the state for property buyouts. The commission approved the transfer on Tuesday.
Minot Finance Director David Lakefield says the city already has purchased or is in the process of acquiring $23 million in properties.
The 2011 Souris River flood damaged or destroyed more than 4,000 buildings in Minot, displacing more than 11,000 people and causing about $700 million in damage.

LaMotta’s life was depicted in the 1980 film “Raging Bull,” which was based on his memoir and earned Robert DeNiro an Academy Award for best actor.
LaMotta was 83-19-4 with 30 knockouts, taking the middleweight title in 1949 when Marcel Cerdan couldn’t continue after the 10th round.
He also admitted in testimony before a U.S. Senate committee that he threw a fight against Billy Fox, saying he was promised a shot at a title if he did.

Rescue workers have struggled in rain and darkness to pick away unstable debris and reach her.
