FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A Fargo couple says a North Dakota program discriminated against them by denying them an adoption because they weren’t yet married.

James and Tahnee Young are suing Catholic Charities for $6.5 million. They say they were matched up with a 15-year-old girl in foster care five months before their July wedding date and had hoped to have the teen as a bridesmaid.

The Youngs said they became suspicious when they failed to receive the necessary paperwork and were eventually told the adoption was off because the couple was “living in sin” before they were married.

William Harrie, attorney for Catholic Charities and the employees named as defendants, did not respond to email and telephone messages for comment Thursday and Friday. His office said he was tied up with a trial.

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) — A Williston man accused of raping a woman in rural Williams County two years ago has been sentenced to serve 25 years in prison.

Twenty-two-year-old Jean-Michael Kisi and another man were charged in November 2015 after sheriff’s deputies found the 24-year-old woman covered in blood and walking along a road near Epping. She was flown to a Minot hospital to be treated for injuries.

The woman told deputies she was traveling with the men in a vehicle when an argument ensued and she was assaulted.

A jury in June found Kisi guilty of gross sexual imposition and accomplice to attempted murder, and acquitted him of conspiracy charges. Court documents show he was sentenced Thursday.

Co-defendant David Mbulu was sentenced in September to serve 30 years in prison.
